Even though I'm from Cincinnati, I never was a Bengals fan. When I was in Pittsburgh, I asked a Steeler fan do they look at The Cincinnati Bengals as a rival, and he told me "no". Yes, they are in The AFC North Division, but until The Bengals bring a Super Bowl to Cincinnati, and beat The Steelers more often, The Pittsburgh Steelers will NEVER......NEVER, EVER, EVER respect The Cincinnati Bengals.

My point is Steeler football has been a physical brand since the 70's. Secondly The AFC North is the direct descendent of the AFC Central and what team set the standard in that division? The Steelers with physical football. So there is NO way the Ravens set the physical standard as a new franchise.

Today people are hypocrites. The Crabtree/Talib fight got a lot of bad press because it was premeditated and because half the players on the field got out of hand. But it probably also got more UA-cam hits than anything else that week. Btw, I’ll take the Raiders/Chiefs Thursday night battle as game of the year.

The Steelers of the 90s set that tone before Ray Lewis was there. Yes it was AFC Central, but that was the tone. Maybe you heard of guys like Greg Lloyd, Carnell Lake, Rod Woodson, Jason Gildon. Big hitters. That came from Cowher. It started in the 90s. This is not a slight on Ray Lewis, it was just that the tone was set in the 90s. Greg Lloyd was not "Wasn't Hired for His Disposition." A dirty hit is one when a DB launches himself for the head or lower body. What refs don't understand is most of the time what they call "dirty" is actual good and clean. There's so little reaction time offensive player have to evade a hit/tackle that there are bound to be unintended collisions.

Only way to survive in the AFC North is to play physical. The Ravens figured that out in the late '90's when Tennessee was in the division.

Dude not only that, Pittsburgh had 4 bowls and 5 appearances on pure physical football before the ravens even existed. They did what they could to compete in the division. Basically be a great red headed step child to the masters of the AFC Central/North

All due respect to Ray Lewis, but the AFC Central was tough and brutal going all the way back to the 70's. The Browns and Steelers rivalry was intense long before the Browns turned into the Ravens. The Steelers had a league changing defense before the Ravens did. Even in the 90's under Cowher, the Steelers had Blitzburgh. I'm not diminishing Lewis's status as one of the all time greats who dominated his era, but he did not make the AFC North what it is today. Those seeds were planted long ago.

So the Steelers learned to play physical from the Ravens?. Lol Yeah I remember the Ravens in the 70's They where straight killers! Mean Joe Lewis and the crew the top dogs back then. Whitlock went straight under the table during that ode to Ray. Cup the balls and all.

You are high man. Steelers were physically dominant before the ravens were a team. Don't forget that. You remember cower power. Greg lloyd meeting Kevin green at the qb. Jason gilden, lavon Kirkland, man it was Pittsburgh that started this.

Great point by Whitlock. They created the AFC North after the AFC Central back in 2001. But man it would have been great if the Ravens which are a port city in the east to be in the AFC East, then move Miami to the AFC South, (so they don't have to travel to all the northeastern teams). Move the Colts out of the AFC South to the AFC North where they geographically are at.

Absolutely one of the most ridiculous statements ever...to say that ray Lewis and the Ravens set the tone for the physicality of the AFC north is ridiculous...the Steelers defense Was stacked threw the 90s and 2000s.. let's not forget that blitzburg was smacking around the Ravens when the were the Brown's.. The Steelers defense made the North.. and while every team in the north starts there season goals out to beat the Steelers... We start the season goals out to win a championship..I respect the Ravens but to say they were the reason for become today's black and blue division it the most ridiculous statement ever.

You notice how the all of the AFC North's biggest rival is the Steelers? The steelers are the daddy of the division. They want to dethrone them. The bengals, browns, and ravens don't have that kind of magic against each other but they all do against Pittsburgh.
