Great question Phil! I think of "groove" as a puzzle piece that fits perfectly with the other pieces. If I'm in the groove, it means that I'm playing a drum part that fits the music so well, that it sounds & feels great for that style of music! Also I've seen guys playing simple rock tunes with a chart, and they played the music technically correct, with no mistakes, but it sounded flat & sterile, with no emotion or passion at all. So groove to me touches the intangible, the invisible qualities that make us want to dance, clap, or just get up a swing to the music!

I think Michael Angelo was asked how he carved such beautiful statues that are even now works of fine art. He said he imagined in his mind what he wanted to sculpt, (let's say an angel) then he simply removed anything that wasn't a part of that image. Maybe in music we edit out anything that isn't a part of the music's groove, & thus we create a drum groove that fits the music well.

Thanks a lot for your beautiful message Phil. As an Indian I never cared about Indian rhythms/culture. But after going to spain to learn flamenco guitar and music I soon realised my limited “1 e & uh “funk methodology is not enough to even clap on the one with a flamenco dancer. I started learning konnakol with Ghatam master Ghatam Karthick. The experience and learning completely transformed the way I even listen to music.
I just wanted to thank you for the work you have put in to share all this wisdom, with such clarity and depth. Even though these are meant for drummers, I think all musicians can benefit a lot from these. Espero que tocamos juntos en India en futuro. Mucho respeto maestro 🙏

@@philmaturanodrums Do you have any experience with flamenco music and rhythms? It’s a different universe. The way they feel subdivisions and improvise. Comes back to what you said. Each style has its own culture and “groove”

Steve Gadd answered the question what is groove with "it's an agreement". I thought that was a good answer.

Different genre's of music have different grooves, so if I try to impose a rock feel on a jazz ballad then I'm not in the groove at all. I've heard famous drummers try to play along with a great tabla player, & it sounded lame at best, and really it was painful to watch because it just didn't fit, it didn't groove at all!
