- Dick Dale... invented surf music in the 1950's. Not the '60's as is commonly believed. He was given the title "King of the Surf Guitar" by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down. He met Leo Fender the guitar and amplifier Guru and Leo asked Dale to play his newly creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo Fender broke into uncontrolled laughter and disbelief, he was watching Dale play a right handed guitar upside down and backwards, Dale was playing a right handed guitar left handed and changing the chords in his head then transposing the chords to his hands to create a sound never heard before.
RIP Dick Dale. The Surf will always be up for you Bro
Not the surf it's the desert.
@@NormAppleton he made one of the best surfing songs ever so yeah the surf will always be up for him.
Saw him play at Club Soda in Kalamazoo in 1995. He was amazing. The kid who was playing drums for the show? A really young Jack White.
Right on!
He's great in those Panda movies.
The bassist? Abraham Lincoln.
The engineer? Einstein.
The trombonist? William Riker
They HAVE to put Dick Dale in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame! He's become one of those individuals whose talent is now unquestionable.
Simple Fact, nobody sounded like him, ever.
Ah frick All halls of fame. Political cess pools. I mean hhof changed my life n all as a video gamer, but pick your favorites yourself, not some jagoffs with comittee lol
That's amazing, he played a right handed guitar left-handed impromptu.
He was a genius who created a new sound.
He left a positive mark on America's culture.
He will be missed but never forgotten. RIP-Dick Dale🙏
When he moved out to the west coast, he lived across the street from my Mother in Costa Mesa. Went to Newport Harbor High. Early 50”s.
This is the masterpiece of a guitar sound, thank you Dick Dale
Eddie Van Halen can now rightly take his place beside Dick Dale, Glen Campbell and Roy Clarke since they are, and always have been, the members of the same club. Unique Guitar Masters. Cheers
For the first minute of this, I thought I was watching the new installment of Star Wars.
They should add this music to the intro of Star Wars
+yorkie elliot Which, also, apeared in the 50's not the 70's as we, commoners, know...
same
Yeah, that was some graphic silliness. I was waiting for the Silver Surfer in space... He plays using strings that are like cables. Very thick. That's how he got that sound. Also, he's left handed. The last time I saw him he almost had a punk band trio. Loud, simple, memorable and way-out fun! Looks bad and tough but a nice guy. Don't tell anyone.
not at all
RIP Dick Dale. Never saw you play but you will always be King of the Surf Guitar.
RIP, Dick Dale. You were truly the King of Surf Guitar music, the teacher with many students. Your music lives on!
Thank you DICK DALE for doing your part to help tame mankind with your gift and talent. Your influential guitar playing style and music was part soundtrack to our young baby boom lives. May GOD bless your legacy and surviving family.
musicians come and go but there will always be a sacred spot in my heart fo Dick Dale
RIP... Brother Dick! Surf will always be up! :)
A different time... a different world. Dick Dale the original.. The music will last forever.
Pro tip: Music and Writing, instead of separate. Pretty sure we all came here for Dick Dale.
Dick Dale is born on May the 4th.... May the 4th be with you! The Star Wars crawl seems fitting.
RIP Dale, the song from Pulp Fiction (Misirlou) is one of his pieces of work I'll always remember.
RIP Mr. Dale - play in heaven with the angels - you will be greatly missed.
The music starts at 1:15
Thanks. Waste of 1:15 of my time when I just wanted to check out the video.
You are my savior, thank you so much haha
Thanks :o)
Thanks
Thanks, spared me the crap
one of my favorite guitar players for over fort years.
Saw Dick last night at Space in IL. What a Talent! Brilliant and astonishing. So gifted and a heart Of Gold. What a priveledge to see this legend. Just love Him!!!
Saw him in mid to late 90's for free on the Santa Monica pier free. Its was awesome.
Abraham Salazar i
how much did it cost?
it was free for free
Dick Dale was amazing. Was sad to hear of his passing. He was the king of the surf guitar.
But, the reverb or delay sound was pioneered by another great guitarist way back
around 1950 by Johnny Guitar Watson in his epic recording "Space Guitar".
He used a classic trick of recording thanks to the spacing of record, play back, and monitor heads on
old reel to reel recording tape decks. Dick used Leo Fender's reverb unit to get that
classic wet, delayed reverb effect. I have a tube Fender reverb unit and nothing else has
that classic surf guitar sound.
I really enjoy listening to both Dick Dale and Johnny Guitar Watson. Two totally different
types of music, but both musicians are just so great, May they both rest in peace...
Or, maybe start an amazing guitar band in heaven!
Yes,Johnny Guitar Watson,a true gangster guitarist ! 😎 If we add Link Ray .🤔...power trio from Hell !😂
Dick Dale was a true genius.
The 50's like- rythm and the awsome fast playing surf sound is just awsome :D
Thanks to info about Dick Dale and a great tribute to him. He is a very talented guitarplayer !!
I had a 64' VW camper, complete with a Muntz 4 track stereo with two 12 Harmon speakers with 30' cables. Used to blast DD while surfing the SoCal coastline in the sixties. Nothing like dropping into a five footer while Dick is ripping.....ahhhhhhhh!
merlinolson1
My God, I hadn't thought about "Madman Muntz" in 50 years! !
I had that 4 track, too...WONderful !! Thanks for that memory !
Gorgeous!!!
Dick Dale is one of the most accomplished guitarists, and most accomplished Strat players, in the history of electric guitar.
The Strat was invented in 1954, so Dick Dale was way ahead of the pack.
And, dig his take on a country/western standard.
And, he's another brilliant leftie!
He's fabulous.
Dick Dale was a mentor to Jimi Hendrix. You don't get more influential than that!!!
Yes, My husband was the Mentor to many great musicians over the decades...Thank You!!!
I only recently heard of this man. Amazing stuff he can do with a guitar.
Dick Dale certainly an awesome surf guitar playing dude. OMG. Surprised the strat could stand up to such unusual punishment!!!! . mos60
With the ridiculously heavy gauge strings!
dick dlae was a great legend of music history...but sadly he's so underrated
SO true. Dick can play ANY instrument you give him! His son Jimmy is very talented too!
Got to see him right before he passed I'm so grateful it was the best show I've ever seen
Since he passed there's not many Men like Dale left in this world.... I know he's up there Rockin in Heaven... Showin Our Father how it's done... Rock on Mr.Dale .... You Earned it...
RIP Dale!!!! Thanks for 'the sound' that lifts our spirits each time we hear it.
A legand in Surf music for us on the West coast in the early '60's-made me start learning the guitar by 1963..thank you for uploading this for the new generations to appreciate..
I saw him live once and he blew my F***ing A** away!!!! sorry for the language.
STILL A GREAT PERFORMER, I LOVE HIM, THE KING OF SURF GUITAR MUSIC!!!!

In a Galaxy Far Far Away
...There was a Guitar Legend by the name of Dick Dale
I ran sound for him when he played the Melody Inn in Indianapolis. He was a nice guy and his wife was super nice as well. Dick was an Air Force veteran and part of the fire crew.
Wow, Dick Dale passed away March 16 2019,just a few days ago. He was 81. Thanks for the music Richard Anthony Monsour
Absolutely startling and soooo different as a guitarist, just fantastic!!!
This is the sort of whammer grade electronic surfer guitar that sets me off... my Altec A7 clones are soaring with a gorgeous home made triode push pull amp of a mighty twelve RMS watts per heh and it sounds Fantastic... Dick Dale is the man. I am in envy to all the guys who got to see him perform...
You can still see him play. www.granadatheater.com/event/1016029-guitar-legend-dick-dale-dallas/
thanks Jerry. I didn't expect that. Unfortunately I'm in Iowa and we don't get nearly enough of that kind of cool up here lol the Other kind, yeah.
I thought Dick Dale was not from the fifties but from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.
fallfav the force is strong in this one
Dick was where the Ventures got their ideas
Haha brilliant comment, I bursted in laugh here...
he was... is... always great.
RIP good buddy, you'll be missed and were always so much fun!
I saw him play at a small club in Asheville, NC in 2002 or 2003. One of the best live shows I've seen. Really miss this guy.
Our King is still alive , long live the King of Surfer rock ,,, Dick Dale
Amazing, one of the best guitar renditions. Eerie.
2 of the Greatest, Link Wray and Dick Dale
Agree plus James Burton.
think i heard him n a bar in killarney back in 06..... booze free wednesday..... stood outside and could swear it was him. man was it good.
Elizabeth Cotton, known for composing the famous folk song, "Freight Train" covered by Peter, Paul & Mary and more was playing this way in the early 1900s at the age of 11. I've been playing this way since the '50s before I ever heard of Ms. Cotton or Dick Dale.
Saw him at Pioneer park in 1962, 1963 in San Bernardino California. My first live band :)
Overwhelming guitar sound, bigger than life.
I have always followed the gospel according to that master musician Mr Scott Gorham Of Thin Lizzy. He says that Dick Dale was the first guitar hero that he took a liking to. Scott always has great taste
Great rendition
absolutely stunningly brilliant song
Thank You Brother for bringing a new kind of music to America It will live on forever rest in peace lh&r
I got to see Dick Dale in Peabody's Downunder in Cleveland. One of the absolute greatest concerts I've ever witnessed. It's the 2nd best one. I had chills going up & down my arms and spine. The guitar playing, the playing . . . Oh, he signs autographs after his shows. He signed my Pulp Fiction CD ( I heard him for the 1st time on Pulp Fiction)). He told me to buy better shred than dead which I did. I had a greatest hits CD at the time.
This just gave me goosebumps. It is such an injustice that Dick Dale is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.He was a pioneer and an innovator.RIP Great One.DDM
Underrated yet the surf guitarists hailed as their mentor & guru...RIP beautiful soul...Hendrix once said he got his sound from him...Awesome, Magnifique!!!
RIP Dick Dale. In Surf Heaven by day, Rock and roll Heaven by night.
Eddie Van Halen couldn't play one of Jimi Hendrix's guitars without re-stringing it. But he could play one of Dick Dale's guitars. Just one of those little tidbits of rock and roll.
tygrkhat40! Jimi used medium gauge strings, a .10 for high E, a jazz set-up.
Dick must be the first punk guitarist. twenty years in advance. what a musician.
thanks for the star wars intro
ty still learning at 56 lol
great stuff surf rules .
Thanks ... awesome ~
When I saw him back around '95 he could still kick ass! I've been a Dickhead ever since...
Whoa there. I think the shadows deserve just as much credit as mr. dale
His double plucking of a chord is what also gave him such an incredible sound
I never saw anyone like him. I love you Dick Dale. I.hope you know how much you were admired. Genuis
RIP the king of Surf🙌
best intro ever!!
eat your heart out, hendrix! even better, fender will rip it out. what a talent. none better.
fantastic version
When I watched him play he broke several of his larger guitar strings and had to restring them while we waited. Needless to say he was quick at that task.
Played this at round 6am - 5am at WACF country music station in Paris, IL as a wake up tune. Mgmt was not amused. Lol
I saw Dick Dale I think in 93 at the Santa Monica Pier for the first time and he put on a killer show and I've been converted since then. Have all his records and truly appreciate his style of guitar player.
Pure guitar 🎸 legend unique sound started in the 1950s people just don't know how good Dick Dale was brilliant sound R.I.P Dick Dale from a Teddy Boy 🎼📻🎶🚀🙏 respect
Very impressive, it did not know him.
Some parts reminded me of when Johnny comes marching from home.
Or Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya
I got to see him last year in Dallas , his outlaw stories from back in the day are funny as hell.
He told me this song is on Space Mountain at Disneyland in 1996 at the Chevy car show LA County fair. Met him n his young son. Grateful for meeting the King of surf guitar. There's Dick Dale than everyone else...
Fair winds and following seas brother
Harmony Park, I was there.
I saw him a while ago, he signed some records I had of his, and then he flirted with my wife. :) old coot puttin the moves on my wife was funny.

What a Phenomenon! R.I.P. Dale
This is so awesomely powerfull it's ripping my heart out!
I love what you've done...I can't describe how I feel; it's just great! Perhaps "sensual" is the best way to express it!
the true master of the stratocaster.
I used to right my motorbike with this blasting in my earphones when I lived in the south of France.
What a feeling when you're speeding on the road by the sea on a warm summer day with this shite
Rip Dick Dale your son is the spitted image of you and a good mate
This is an awesome version!
Sure miss him. ❤️
my older cousin from Everett mass saw him many times in the 50s down on revere beach got his autograph on his 45
I knew that Jimi Hendrix played a guitar upside down, but he had the strings in the right position. Dick Dale actually played it upside down with the bass string on the bottom of the fret, That is really incredible.
the drummer also lends his expertise to this great recording
My favourite version of Ghostriders... Roy Clark is also great but Dick Dale's interpretation does it for me.
Met him n his son in 96. Car Chevy show Pomona Valley Fair. He performed this tune. Incredible ❤️
I love this song
Dick Dale is great. He is a Boston area boy(Quincy, Mass) and appears her at Johnny D's occassionally.
