If you're looking for a simple melodic idea that's a little off the beaten path, try standard tuned guitar with 4 string banjo capo on low 4 strings on fret 2. Play what you think of as a normal "Em" chord "244200", sounds good right. Now transition that '244' that you play up the neck as a typical standard shaped power chord on the bottom three strings, e.g. '355200', '577200'. Many of the normal chord shapes you use in standard tuning also work. You can also tune the guitar 1 whole step down first if you want to keep from raising the tonality.
