I've never understood why there has to be a "greatest drummer in the world". Why not just enjoy watching a nd listening to them all, and leave it at that.
Because, most of the those proclaiming who's the greatest is really someone attempting to show you how much HE knows. "Well, I've been drumming for 30 years and let me tell you...." It all about them - not about the artist.
Greg Lake and Keith Emerson were outstanding artist - it makes sense that they threw in with this young man - Mr. Carl Palmer - Percussionist - Forever Young Carl Palmer.
Carl Palmer is the last of the drum gods... He was Buddy's protege. NO one in the modern era could touch is sheer hand speed. He actually gets FASTER in this solo as time goes by.
Greatness is found in the music, not the players. A great player playing a crappy song or piece of music isn't going to change the fact that the song is crappy. Bonham and Ringo played on great stuff AND their contributions were great and essential.
Nice video. Nobody should be cracking on any of these guys. Ian Paice, Bruford and a few others should have been on here, also. Paice is a big Buddy Rich fan and always talks about how he influenced him. In his early solos, he seems to emulate Rich quite a bit. I was always disappointed when he went to a more controlled style of playing to become a better time keeper. Jon Lord said it took a lot of verve out of his playing. Either way, I still think that Bruford and Paice should be on this video.
Ginger Baker was the only one who produced a melodic drum song, TOAD, which could be played with guitars or solo and in which the melody line was maintained, just like a song....
I enjoyed Pressed Rat and Wart Hog. Peter Edward could write also. Too bad Pressed Rat and Wart Hog closed down their shop. They didn’t want to, ‘‘twas all they had got.
Thank You, most people only know Baker from Cream & never listened to everything he did. People never knew Baker they just read & repeated crap they heard others say. Most rock drummers only play rock Baker played Jazz, Blues, Rock, African & other styles of music, plus wrote & produced music.
His technique is nearly flawless. His hands barely moving as he blazes those rolls. Best solo here. I still think Buddy is better but the solo they chose wasnt his most amazing.
great drummers. Hard to compare Buddy Rich with anyone. Anyone that saw him perform can appreciate his pure speed, left hand, and total command of the stage. All on an old school kit. Carl Palmer someone that I always enjoyed with ELP.
@marvin kline said it best: "Buddy Rich had the best rudiments ever but Joe Morello and Gene Krupa had way more groove and swing. IMO there is no best just a bunch of great!" @jacob newman too: "It's very difficult to compare Bonham with Baker with Ringo with Moon with Rich or whoever else you add to the conversation. Each player fit perfectly ..." Ringo - one of the best. Simple, you bet. When you hear Beatles songs, you hear Ringo's drum parts, too. Stewart Copeland and Vinnie Colaiuta are great. Clyde Stubblefield and John "Jabo" Starks for James Brown. Bernard Purdie. Zakhir Hussein and his father Allah Rakah. Taranath Ram Rao could recite a composition in 13-and-a-half beats, while playing a different composition in 17, and make them resolve on the one. Some people live on a different plane. I had no idea that carl palmer had such monster technique 5:20 but ELP had no groove and buddy is better anyway.
Buddy Rich is the G. O. A. T, his skill level allows him to do with a standard 5 drum kit (either double mounted toms or double floor toms) what these other cats do with these monstrous set ups. The more drums and cymbals these guys have are marketing tools for their respective companies.
I have been a professional drummer since 1969. First of all, it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to say who "The Best" is, on any instrument. Rock drumming is as different from jazz as the North Pole from Antartica. That said, if I had to choose only ONLY drummer to epitomize 'The Best,' it would have to be Buddy Rich, hands down. He could outplay all of these drummers with his right hand tied behind his back. In the entire history of percussion, there will only be one Buddy. No one else even comes close.
Easily the SICKEST vid on U-Toob. Carl Palmer [ELP] is a freakin' animal magician on his skins and I never knew he was so skilled and powerful. Drumming isn't all about how hard the drummer hits their skins with their sticks - although when attempting to make a point I guess it does....and it's definitely isn't all about the drummers kit either...and again though - if their kit is huge and flashy perhaps that tells us all about the drummer's characteristics...just look and hear Buddy Rich...nothing flashy...but boy does his sticks move fast...and the variety of sounds he makes...wow. For me this vid is all about the opening act Mr Carl Palmer, ELP, if he could he'd play his kit with his head. GO ANIMAL [The Muppets] !!!
I miss the old "Battle of the Bands" shows from my miss-spent youth. They were fun because we got to see a lot of bands and we all just liked our favorites the best anyway.
There's a world of difference between being the best at something and being the most proficient. Just because someone chops potatoes the fastest, or the thinnest, or both, doesn't make them the best chef around. It's the flavour and the combination of ingredients that does it, and sometimes a simple dish is tastier than a very elaborate one. It's like Ratatouille, and that's why people like Ringo Starr are on this list, and deservedly so.
yes Joaquim Duarte: i might add: the drummer in a group (more technically an orchestra, than a 'band'= a band, is what plays the stars and stripes). Carl Palmer starts this off. I'm a fan, but not of this particular solo. He's MUCH better than this, a jazz cat at heart. He was a good friend of Buddy Rich, and Rich admired him. That says a LOT.
Well, at least he's in better form here than at Atlantic Records 45th Reunion. He outright embarrassed himself. Buddy also dug Ian Paice, who isn't mentioned here, but should be. He was invited to and I believe did play with Buddy's Orchestra.

Well, the old drummers did it gently, they produced magic seemingly from nowhere, no histrionics, no special effects, no crowd stimulation, the pieces of wood in their hands spoke musical volumes...
Bonham brought the Funk. That's why everything grooved. He left space in the notes, his fills where always musical and sometimes flashy. I think he could have played in any band, any type of music and he would have made the band better.

He could never play with the strict metronomic evenness of Neil Peart just as Neil could never swing like Buddy. Everyone has their own thing. It's not a competition. Carl Palmer and Simon Phillips are the two best i have seen.
What Buddy Rich could do with a barebones drum kit was just amazing.
Same with Sandy Nelson, with what looks like no effort on his part!
I liked them all. Each had a different and unique way of displaying their abilities. I guess you can figure out who I like.
Barriemore Barlow, master of all.
Finally somebody included Carl Palmer as one of the best.
Switches from traditional to match grip and back so easily.
Ginger Baker was the only one who produced a melodic drum song, TOAD, which could be played with guitars or solo and in which the melody line was maintained, just like a song....

As far as drum solos go I prefer Joe Morello.
I agree, love it when he plays with his hands no doubt Bonham thought the same.
The best drummer in the world is this black guy I met in South Africa a few years ago who was playing on a set of drums he made himself. Ginger Baker.
