Hope you all enjoy the vid. Truly one of the coolest machines we’ve built. Just so you know, the bunker had 5 layers of reinforcement so we were safe 😊 excited to show you the insane cuts we get in Katana vid 2 👍
Let's see a bunker breakdown! Because it looks rather like a corrugated shipping container on the outside AND the inside and it looks like you're all watching the machine through a single sheet of plexi...
A combination of my knowledge of traditional katana assembly practices, and being an engineer led me to the same conclusion in about the same time. Lol
With the GoPro shot from under the blades, I noticed there was a point where the frame rate matched with the rpm and it looked stationary. What if you found that rate and then dropped stuff so it looks like things are just falling into pieces?
The sound it makes makes it so terrifying lol. The way the swords bend in that last one is pretty insane. Slowmo reveals a lot of stuff that we had no idea goes on when objects interact, it's pretty interesting.
Sword Machine vs. Melon is going to be tough to beat for Slowie Of The Year.... Watching those blades flex was absolutely bonkers! Wonderful job, fellas!
this is one of the reasons the katana was such a formidable weapon. did you see how they bent and wobbled like noodles? other lesser swords would either straight up break, or bend, and not bend back. that flexibility was what made them amazing. now, if only they attatched them at a slight angle for the slicing motion instead of chopping motion.
@@beatles42ohgg94 actually you got that completely backwards. Katanas with their differential hardening have one hard but brittle edge and a soft spine that bends instead of springing back. Many spring steel swords from medieval Europe and other places, on the other hand, can bend pretty much into a C and will spring right back with no plastic deformation. Sure, a katana will not snap like a spring steel sword when bent more than it can handle, but the amount it can bend before plastic deformation is significantly smaller.
The cheapest yes. They are mostly designed for ornamental use not actually fighting these days… I’m surprised they stayed together at all… but this was a foreseeable failure. a very dangerous one. They’d easily pierce ar500 that cargo container wouldn’t stop them .
Any time you have impact energies similar to binding energies, it’s gonna be fun. If you’ve ever seen Meteor Crater in Arizona, that’s ROCK splashing like a liquid.
@@eroraf8637 Even more fun fact, if the impact is intense enough and the atmosphere dense enough, all that liquified and gasified rock will superheat the atmosphere and then rain back down.
This is actually due to the frame rate of the camera. When a blade is in the same spot in the circle every time the camera captures a frame, it will look like it's standing still. If it's slightly faster or slower it will look like it's going slow or backwards. This is the same reason it happens multiple times since all the swords look the same, you don't know how many swords you're seeing between frames and it can vary.
@@Saol.Alainn I don't remember ever seeing the backward spinning with my own eyes in natural light. It happens all the time with lights that flicker on and off though! As far as I know, eyes don't have a specific "refresh rate" where all receptors go on and off at the same time, there is a lot of overlap and at any given time some are on and some off, which results in a smooth blend and motion blur instead of sharp still images.
Ballistic gel models of the boys! Also don't enlarge the holes in the katanas and put some wood or other reinforcement either side of them clamped with the same two (smaller) bolts through the holes so they absorb the flex with the blade rather than the tang with a massive hole in! Also where did that Katana blade go at 440kph?!? next Aus State?

The slow mo of the knives cutting through the fruit and ever so gently kicking pieces of it back up in the air is just great. Gav and Dan couldn't do that any better! Edit: never would have known a sword could bend like that.
Katanas are actually incredibly weak sword that can chip and bend at everything if you tried to split someone down the middle you would break the sword and you can not cut bone with them well you half to hit joints so you don't make it impossible to use also you can and very easily with a long sword which are actually lighter than katanas split the katana in half they are not what they are cracked uped to be
3:45 i took a double take here but the shadow of the blade perfectly lines up with the actual blade, which made it look like the cut happened in a different place
As soon as I saw the handles still on the blades I was fully expecting half or more blades to fly off and I physically recoiled when I saw it fail >~< Glad you guys are okay and had a blast!! Had a blast watching the carnage!!

If I was you guys, I would absolutely not be willing to do this without at least an inch thick wall of steel between me and the swords. I'd also probably lay down on the floor whenever it was active to lower the chance of me being impaled if a sword was flung directly in the direction of the wall. Edit: Also, I definitely would have made the same mistake with the dowels. While I have heard of that before, it would not have occurred to me.
I have to say that this is one of the most frightening constructions I've ever seen, on UA-cam or anywhere else. Kudos for the total lack of bloodshed.
Couple of suggestions for spinny swords... 1. Build a funnel from some plywood and let the roundy items roll in a line out of a chute. 2. Connect a ramp wuth an angle to work in combo with gravity to cascade items into the rotation of the blades 3. Assistance might be needed from an agitator in case of less roundy things. Depending on the angle out of the funnel. This was a great viddy idea come true! Thank you, gentlemen!
My first thought after seeing the trailer was "Do they even know how katanas are assembled and fixed on their handles?" They were lucky enough that they didn't have any casualties upon firing that thing up.
The flexing of the blades on that last shot is actually really cool because swords (not just katana but any sword) is supposed to have a bit of flex to it so that it doesn’t just snap as soon as it hits something hard like another sword, a shield, armour, bone, etc. That whole Newton’s Third Law thing applies to ancient weaponry as well.
Katanas are single-edged swords. Yours were placed with the flat side down and the angled side up, which is why everything was tossed upward by the cuts. It also meant that the swords were pushed down with equal force on each slice, flexing them. For weak items like berries, the swords would cut right through with almost no movement, but the more solid and heavy things like a watermelon are going to put a lot of downward force on each blade. Also the curve of the blades tend to push the victims/ammunition outward, reducing the number of cuts they'll make. The solution is to use straight, doubled-edged blades like longswords.
This is definitely in my top 3 videos if yawls for sure and as someone who as a little kid, lives knifes and swords, you’ve outdone yourselves and can’t wait for the next katana vid 🥰
A proper Katana is held together by a single bamboo pin, as they found out the hard way. The tsuba is pushed over the tang, against the habaki. The hilt material is then added, and the bamboo pin is inserted. They’re then wrapped and the handle construction is more or less complete.
Idk why but this one really scares me. Like borderline superweapon. The sound it makes gives me a chill, and just how it obliterates stuff is particularly horrifying
