Meeting Traffic In Double Parked Streets | Learn to drive: Intermediate skills

- There are often parked cars or other obstructions in a drivers way when driving in urban areas - and these are usually fairly easy to deal with.
However you will occasionally find streets with cars parked on both sides - only leaving enough space for 1 car in the centre of the road.
Unless you are in a 1-way street, you may find yourself meeting oncoming traffic in the middle of the road with no room to squeeze past each other - this video will show you how to handle this situation.

I'm loving these "what would you do?" clips. I wish we could see more of them.
I loved the "what would you do" part, the viewer directly gets involved. Never seen it before on UA-cam.
Thank you, the Idea is to do something different to benefit other
One of the best video on meeting traffic ,parked car both or one side and also giving us clear instructions on the situation regarding what should we do and also about anticipation and plan ahead..
Best video no doubt about it.
I passed my driving test today after watching your video. It really helpful. Thank you.
Excellent! Well done 🚙👌🏼😃
Perfect video, especially the "what would you do part"! Thanks a lot

That’s great to hear - well done!!! 🚙😃👍🏼
Helpful video. I live in the US, so I just have to interchange every time you say "right" or "left"
Fantastic video just what I needed great informative driving skills site thank you 🚗💯
Amazing and informative videos, To be honest i learn loads from the videos ... Thankyou
Car parking on road is hell and ugly to look at
Super great video , always :-) love the interactive bits ,so helpful thankyou you're the best
Excellent information and video
I personally hate maneuvering through parked cars.
Perfect ! Thanks for this. I have my test tomorrow so this is some good revision 😁
Good luck! 🤞🏼
Beautiful you make video and you provide super super information.I give you thanks
Thank you again good advice
I was in a street like this yesterday and let me tell you, one of the worse driving experiences of my life, as there was line of cars in traffic on incoming traffic and I had to weave over 40 cars and wait to have enough room to pass, took me like 20 minutes to get out of there plus the fear of scratching the cars right next to me that were stuck there 😖
Sounds tricky!
I live on a very busy side road in London. Often there are very few or very tight spaces. What do you do if you can't see any appropriate spaces to pull in to?
One car will have to reverse back to the nearest passing place. It rarely comes to that though, if you start looking for a place as soon as you see the other vehicle.
this is so helpful. thank you so much !
Very interesting thanks 😊
If we pull up car to let other car go than do we need check mirror before go further ??
Yes - a mirror check whilst we're waiting is a good idea. If anyone behind us misunderstands what we are doing, and thinks we have parked then they might try and drive past us - just as we pull away. Spotting this in our mirrors could prevent an accident!
When I pull up my car in gap I asked my teacher about signal on she said I don't need it.. If I stop my car suddenly any car behind me than
It depends on the situation - but if you think it's necessary to indicate to make it clear that you haven't parked, then do so.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool how I make them know that I haven't park only giving room to car pass because the car behind of me will think I am parking car.. Is there any other way to show behind car we just giving room to go other car
Try not to stop too close to the kerb, as that might make it look as though you have parked + indicate right to show you are intending to pull our into the road after the oncoming car has passed.
what do you do when the on coming vehicle blocks the middle of the road and won't move into a gap?
+end times Then we should pull into a gap instead - even if it means reversing! Most drivers are considerate, and whoever has the best gap usually pulls in to let the other person past.
Tell him to move it while waving the finger lol
I’m hear because I had a nightmare lesson last week on this subject lol
What if there is no gap for either car???
Someone will have to reverse back to a passing place.
@@truckermark2946 It sounds like a tricky situation, but without being there it's impossible to say what you should have done. Perhaps the examiner spotted the car before you committed to passing the parked cars and failed you for not stopping? Perhaps he expected you to reverse back to a passing place? Did he explain further at the end of the test?
Thanks 🥰
can you fail for pulling in to a gap to be safe even though i might have been able to go?
You can only fail for doing something that puts you in ‘potential danger’ (serious fault) or ‘actual danger’ (dangerous fault) so I wouldn’t expect so.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thanks for the help!
I love this video. Help me... can you do more like this ? X
Thanks! Have you seen our other video ‘Meeting Oncoming Traffic’?
Advance Driving School
I don't know .... spose to had a test to day but beause it snowed had to be moved to a other date, april lol so i have 6 wks wait :-(. My weak spot is meeting traffic n around abouts, i love the around about videos help so much!, i am ok with v thing ales.
Unlucky - although there is going to be a ton of cancelled tests this week! Keep checking for cancellations though as you might find something sooner.
Advance Driving School
Thank you
Clip 1 I’d just sit still and wait for the oncoming car to pull into the gap and then I’d proceed when it was safe to do so, clip 2 I’d keep on going as there is enough space to pass the blue car and they’re already waiting for us, clip 3 I’d just sit and wait for the white car ahead to move out of the way first before deciding what to do next, clip 4 I’d carry on going as the oncoming car is giving way to us, clip 5 I’d pull over to let the oncoming car come through.
Hiya
With reference to 3:18, you could have also pulled in after the grey Hyundai / before the blue Ford as opposed to forcing the other car to pull over. Would it have been okay to do this as well?
Yes, either option would be fine.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks! 👍
If I pull into a gap and am waiting for a car I usually leave right indicator on so cars behind definitely know I'm waiting and will be pulling out (provided no turning to the right which could confuse) . Amount of times people near me will go past and meet the car I was waiting for and have to reverse back behind me is comical. Is this correct practice? I heard from a friend who just took their test that you are not required to signal to pull back out even if there are cars behind?
The use of an indicator in this situation is optional, but we would definitely use it if we need to stop and there is following traffic. On the other hand if there is no oncoming traffic and we can keep rolling we wouldn’t indicate usually. Just do it when needed 👍🏼
Advance Driving School thanks for getting back to me. Keep up the good work - your videos are excellent and very professionally made. Perhaps you could do a video on choosing a first car (for different budgets), basic maintenance such as Tyre pressures etc, Tyre treads and condition.
Thanks alot🙏
what if there are cars on both sides of a road with no gaps, you commit to going through and the oncoming car decides not to wait for you before the parked cars and comes towards your vehicle despite barely enough room for both cars? whats the best way to handle that situation please?
Whoever has to reverse the least distance should back up and allow the other driver to continue.
2nd gear at 15-20mph would sound like an f1 engine in my car! I'll stick to 3rd or 4th so I can hear myself think xD
All cars can do at least 30mph in second gear - so 20 should be fine! If you need to accelerate quickly you might need to go even faster to get full power from your engine. Check out this video: Accelerating Quickly: ua-cam.com/video/NeGWVLaDQu8/v-deo.html 👍🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Mine must have really steep gearing ratios as it has a high RPM at 20 even in 3rd! Thank you for your reply, your videos are great as always! :)
How would you parellel park on a street like with with cars on both sides like o have a street like this at home and i cant parellel park because i dont have enough room to manuever to thrn without risking touching the car on the other side
We would position our car very close to the ‘target car’ before starting the manoeuvre, to give more space on the other side. This video might help: Real-Life Parallel Parking: ua-cam.com/video/_TVoIOo-a1Y/v-deo.html 👍🏼
In America we never have this problem.
There’s a number of round abouts in my test area where the left lane on exit is filled with parked cars… I only know this as I’m familiar with the area - on the test day should i stick to approach in left lane or can I go into the right lane (where I usually wouldn’t) to avoid having to stop behind parked cars waiting for someone to let me in right after a round about
And on normal roads aswell, fairly wide but there’s occasionally cards parked in the left lane. I only know this as I know the area- can I just stay in the right hand lane to avoid going in and out of lanes?
There is a fine line between planning ahead, and blocking the overtaking lane. Without seeing the road we can’t really say what is best. Your own instructor will know what to do 👍🏼
can you please guide me that how much distance/way should give to the traffic passing from both sides?
cause I feels while driving I would may hit some pedestrian or traffic from my left and right side ...
+Usman Alam The exact distance can vary depending on the width of the road, and a few other factors. A good instructor can help you with this. UA-cam is great, but I think proper driving lessons are the best bet to sort this out!
For driving test like 1:50 ,will i get hesitation if we park at left before queue and not choosing stop at centre of the road and let the opposite car park on the right ?
No, that would also be fine. 👍🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thank you! It help alot! I watch your channel again and again ,Hope my test on 2 weeks later are going well!!
Thanks - and good luck of course! 🤞🏼
If My left hand no gap, but there is a car park entrance, can I stop in the entrance and give way to oncoming car? Block the entrance is it driving fault in driving test?
Giving way to the oncoming car is more important than blocking a side exit for a moment. 👍🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thank you for your reply
When pulling into the gap do you have to indicate yes or no please????
We wouldn’t normally indicate, as others might think we are parking.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool much appreciates.
do you use a turning signals when puling in gaps
+Svetovidijak Not usually, as it might suggest that we are parking - which may confuse a following driver. When signalling, consider each situation individually and only signal when it will make our intentions more obvious to others.
Please make a video about parking on a street like that, between two cars and with cars parked on the other side :( I just can´t figure out how to do it without hitting the car on the other side :(
Have you seen this video? Real-Life Parallel Parking: ua-cam.com/video/_TVoIOo-a1Y/v-deo.html 👍🏼
how much space is needed to pass parked vehicles on both side?
Ideally a meter on either side - however if you drive slowly it’s OK to squeeze through a smaller gap.
What if it’s uphill aswell ?
It’s the same. Just make sure you’re good at hill starts!
I’m scared of scraping cars on my left and right
You're right be concerned about this, but if you see a tight spot, slow down to give you more time to get your car into the correct position.
Is double parked legal in a residential area?
That depends on any road markings there.
What country is this ?
We live in the UK 🇬🇧 👍🏼
1:42 he flashed you on mate
I know, but the gap I was next to was much bigger than the one he had. Don’t feel you have to do something just because the other driver flashes or waves at you.
Agree
I need to drive
Test is In 3 hours 😬😬
Good luck! 🤞🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool wow feels wired to say this but I passed with 4 minors thank you for all the videos
Excellent - well done!
It should be illegal to double park massive safety hazard! I’m sure it use to be illegal!
