This is all extremely simplistic. An orchid flowers when its actively growing. To get it in active growth you need different fert, you need the roots to grow too, some orchids wont tolerate chemical fert, some love it. Most growers use at least three different ferts to bring the orchid into proper bloom. Some orchids will only bloom once a year others many times a year.Temp humidity and light are all critical at different times of the year. You have to research each ones needs. Some need a rest.
a pretty nifty trick with the phalaenopsis is you wait for the last flower to fall on a bloom spike and you cut at the point about a centimeter below where the last flower was and occasionally you can get a second round of blooms. orchids also like change in temperature. if you have a warm day like 75 degrees Fahrenheit let your house heat up to that temperature and then at night close the windows and turn up the a/c to around 5 or 6 degrees colder!
Last spring I purchased a clearance phaleenopsis from Lowe's that had been saturated and was in standing water. After repotting, I only gave it a couple teaspoons of diluted coffee 3-4 times a week. Believe it or not it actually bloomed this month! I had 3 blooms on this little plant! I did the ice cube method and fertilizer with a previous orchids and they did not survive. Thought it was odd it turned out so well.
No kidding. It drives me mad when certain uneducated growers *cough (Brad's greenhouse), spout copious amounts of misleading information to poor, hopeful new growers. And they can get away with thinking their information is correct because they've set up the ideal growing environment in their greenhouse. So their plants can tolerate their less than knowledgeable treatment and still bloom for them, while home growers, growing indoors have their plants dying from misinformation. The grower on this page however, clearly knows the ABC's of orchid growing and easily guides new growers towards healthy plants in a less than ideal growing environment inside their home.
Hmm, I don't think the grouping of the Cymbidium and Dendrobium under "COOL" temp is correct. I'm at East Asia, the Dendrobium and the Vanda are the most commonly found orchids here. We do not get Cymbidium here cos it's way too hot.
I just got my first orchid & I'm nit sure of the name of it! It is purple with deep Purple stripes & the flower petals on the front on each side look like small elephant ears each with one deep Purple dot that look like eyes & the center looks like an open mouth with what looks like 2 fangs one on each side of the mouth on the bottom of the mouth. Can u tell me what kind of orchid this one is so I'll know how to take care of if? I would appreciate your quick response. Thank you
I wish you'd use "proper" temperatures. I keep forgetting USA is a "Banana republic". Verbatim quote:- " Bloke's Name here - Laborant Quality Control at Fertilizer Company (2003-present) Updated Sep 9 The whole world uses Celsius, only a few banana republics got stuck in Fahrenheit: Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands and the United States ." :¬ )
You can't clone your orchid with a leaf cutting. You have to produce a keiki off the flower spike and let that grow leaves and roots before potting. It takes several months, and some research. Orchids are a strange flower, not like your other house plants.
Thanks for keeping this lesson available. I needed to know everything you taught, especially the information about numbers representing the nitrogen, phosphate, and potash contents in fertilizers.
Very useful information, straight to the point! I have done everything right except “good food!” My orchids look very healthy with lots of green leaves but no flowers. Now I know why. Thank you so much! Let me feed my orchid with good food and I’ll update if they will rebloom!
that's small baby plant. wait till you see 1-2 roots started growing out, cut the stem and plant it in new pot. the main phal is getting weak, that's why the leaves dropped. Check if the containing is too wet? you should watch out the humility of the main plant, best is to repot it and try to water it once daily if is too dry. If she grow new root, mean is a hope for her again.
Hi, Glenda here again. Could you do a repot on oncidiums. And what do they grow well with, Cats or phallies?? food, temp, etc light Thanks Love your videos
I will have to get the right food. I have just been using the stuff I use on my other house plants. The orchid plant itself is growing huge, but it just has never bloomed again since I got it.
So I have two orchids but they have not bloomed since I purchased them. I recently started to fertilize them with Espoma Organic Orchid (twice right after I water my plant) so far. I've had leaf growth but...no sign of blooming. What fertilize do you suggest I use I would love to see them bloom on a regular basis. Please help...thanks.
y orchids (phalanopsis) has blossomed in the spring the last 3 years. I started giving them orchid fertilizer in november. I didn't get one bud shoot except on my cattalya. I always have them in an east window and water them every 7-10 days. what did I do wrong?
I don't have south facing windows in my home that will accommodate your advice. I have only one east facing window with more orchids that the sill can hold. I also live in the desert southwest. This has been an issue for me. Since the climate is pretty mild in the winter, I'm thinking about placing them outside during the daytime, and bringing them in at night. Would that solve my space dilemma?
First, thank you for this video, it was very helpful. I have a question that i was hoping you may be able to help me with? I have a new orchid that is completely different from its phalaenopsis sisters and brothers. I don't know what to do to make it happy. They came as a gift and are from Hawaii. They are Bamboo Orchrids, but they are only shots in a package. I have not yet opened them yet bc i have no idea what to pot them in. what and how do i pot theses guys? i have no idea help (*_*) ty
Thank you for your video. I think most of my rebloom issues would be that my house is too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer? I'm looking forward to watching your videos ❤
Thank you for this helpful video. I live in the Netherlands and just purchased an Oncidium orchid whom seems to grow out of the pot. How do I repot it and can I use a pot one size bigger? Please give advice, much appreciate it!.....Because this is my first Oncidium orchid..Thank you in advance...
Have you ever seen Phals grow leaves in their spikes/ stem? What does it mean? Mine has one on each of two spikes after much poor care. The main leaves at the base have even fallen off. Is there hope for her???
it is not that easy with orchids, me personally only divide my orchids after blooming when they have enough healthy roots and a keiki start to develop. Search for keiki replant.
Many thanks for these orchid tips..What is the name of the first orchid that is shown in the video with the pseudobulbs? I love the shape of this orchid...thanks in advance..
very informational but i have a , the orchid flowers fell off a few months ago the stalk is dk green still so i have not cut it down and i am getting new leaves no problem but o new stalks or flowers. what am i doing wrong
very informational but i have a , the orchid flowers fell off a few months ago the stalk is dk green still so i have not cut it down and i am getting new leaves no problem but o new stalks or flowers. what am i doing wrong
I bet most people are here because you bought this awesome flower from a grocery store and you've had it for a few months now and they're just ugly big leaves with no sign of growth.
my orchid was a 10$ small size - bloomed very beautifully for 6 months(3 flushes of flowers) then: rested for a year - now sending out another flower stalk thing. So I mention the one year resting period - during that time the leaves about doubled their size. From this video I learned about watering... I am watering TOO MUCH. so - i gotta change that.
It's not easy to lower the room temperature to 50f or 60f at night because humans can be freezing instead. I keep my room temperature around 72f to 75f all year round. Will that steady temperature be problem for my orchids? One of my orchids has only one flower bloom looking miserable.
It depends on what types of orchids you're growing but as a rough rule, orchids bloom more reliably if there is a difference in day and night temperatures with a 10 degree difference being ideal. If you can't give them that difference year round, you could consider putting them outside on a window ledge for the summer months where they will have a better chance of experiencing a nightly drop and therefore blooming may be induced.
Do hybrid phalenopsis orchid rebloom. I live in Canada. The outside temperatures can reach -40F during our 8 months of cold winter weather. Human skin freezes in under two minutes. What do you suggest for people who live in a cold, dry and hardly no sunshine climates for 8 months out of the year? Thank you! Susan
Look for lower light plants things that need less light like philodendron. Pothos, ferns and dieffenbachia are good choices. Try an alarm clock with a light on it as well.
Wow, Your "Wisdom" is tremendously appreciated 🙃

great advice and didn't try to promote a product brand. Thank you, Dave

good tips..my orchid are blooming beautifully~~
Is it okay to alternate between the ‘grow’ and ‘bloom’ food? So it does both?
awesome information's, Thank you.

dont water it too much, if the leaves are small plants...thats good...ur plant is multiplying.
So in your opinion humidity has nothing to do with bloom or overall health of orchids? Thanks!
How often do you use the orchid food meaning fertilize?
I bet most people are here because you bought this awesome flower from a grocery store and you've had it for a few months now and they're just ugly big leaves with no sign of growth.
Why are my flowers dying off and do they grow back
All good stuff and very easy...Thank you
As you see, about once a year.
I will look into that.
change plant medium, feed ferts
