- Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Hi Ms. Jessica. Here's the lady with Bear's sister, "Hey George", George is her husband, "does that dog look like Fanny to you or is it just my imagination?" George: "Wow, hot diggity dog, they could be siblings." What an amazing story Ms. Jessica. God bless, take care.
You now have me telling my seedlings happy birthday. :-)
A few years ago I bred golden doodles. My first litter had a great story. About a year after they left 2 owners contacted me to say they took their pup to a local dog park. Each entered at the same time but different entrances, both dogs broke away and immediately ran to each other very happy to see one another. The owners of course talked and figured out they were siblings. It is such a heart warming story.
Here in Norway, a lot of the farmers also work as stand by plowing crew in case of snow fall, because they own tractors and have the equipment. This january we've had over 100 cm of snow where I live, and farmers have been on the road plowing almost around the clock, in addition to having to deal with snow on their own property, water freezing, electricity breakage, trying to keep the heat up indoors (got down to -30C), caring for their animals, etc etc. They are real life heroes, for sure!
Hi Jess, I know it's very early on in planning for your home, but I have a few suggestions. Mostly to plan for aging, but also for just in case something happens. I highly recommend a square bathroom with a "Roll In Shower". Not a walk in, but a roll in. Wide hallways, no narrower than 36". And a kitchen with 32" to 36" clearance around a kitchen island. Walk in closet(s) with a 36" doorway. Actually, all doorways being 36" wide would be smart. It's nice to have these measurements even with able bodied people.
I agree with wider doorways. A friend even put in doors that slid inside the wall. These are what I would have done had I built a home. Looking to the future as we age.
You will never regret any of these ideas and they are so much easier to implement during the building process rather than at some further time. Best to you❤
Yes to these things! We are building a house with these things in mind, because we plan to spend the rest of our lives in the home and age in place. Our building inspector suggested we add backing for future grab bars in the bathrooms too.
@@diannemiller4754 Pocket doors!
Even if it's not for you/family, you could have houseguests that require accessibility.
Talking about cold weather AND building a house, I’ve recently discovered James of @ wild Homestead. He’s an absolute hoot 😂
Building his mini house (to practice before a main house) in the Canadian wilderness in deep snow.
His humble yet Viking approach to build a beautiful homestead for his future wife (not got one yet) and their ten children (pipe dream), is, IMO, refreshing. He makes me LOL.
His latest upload might provide encouragement to those building by error and In below zero snowdrifts.

I watch both you and Morgan. As a matter of fact, I came to you through Morgan. I feel like I know both of you. I am so envious of both of you.
That is SO COOL about Bear and his litter mates!! How awesome is that?? I had my "soul dog" for 15 years. A black lab named Molly. Someone dropped her off at our farm and she and I were best buds. My hubby was an EMS helicopter pilot for years, before he retired. He flew mostly nights and Molly was my protector and my company. She went to the garden, the clothesline, the mail box, on walks, she listened to my fears and would comfort me when there were tears. She adored all our grandkids and was a great guard dog when someone came around that she didn't know especially when my hubby was at work. She scared off the coyotes and loved the cats. We lost her to kidney failure two years ago and I still mourn her. No other dog will ever take her place in my heart.
Sweetie, you can always cry over your awesome doggie as far as I'm concerned. My son was 8 years old when we lost Miss Brown, his wonderful old boxer dog. He woke in the night for weeks, crying his heart out because she was gone, and I still can't think of that time without tearing up, even though my boy will be 36 in a few days. Now he has his dog, Levon, and that's his dear buddy. Thank you as always, for sharing your life and thoughts with us.💕
What a fun story! I have to tell you, the other day I planted some Heather seeds, and I kid you not, two hours later I checked on them. 😂. I thought of you and it made me smile!
Hey Jess, There are once in a lifetime dogs. I always told my wife as soon as we get a house I am getting a dog some type of golden retriever or retriever. A few years later the day we closed on our house I went to work and another nurse asked me if I knew anyone that wanted a puppy. I asked her what kind of dog she said half golden retriever and half black lab. I said I will take it! she said you haven't seen it and I told her God told me years ago once I buy a house I will get a puppy. I shared I closed on a house this morning and this is my gift from Jesus. The next day I went and got her.
She was my dog 24 hours a day! After I lost my wife she was my best best friend! When she met my new wife she went right to her and I knew. I would drive to see her and get there open the door she would run right in the house while I was still in my truck. Her name was Honey and it fit so well. She helped me through some of the very worst days. thank you for the video today. Steven
I always love when I see Bear running next to the 4x4 so this video all about him is ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That is indeed cool! Not only did you find Bear's siblings, but you made a new friend. The simple things in life are sometimes the best.
I found a litter mate of my two border collies at the park one day; the recognition and response they had to each other was so amazing to see! I truly believe they knew exactly who each other was after nine years ❤ the body language was like nothing before! True love .
The amazing story/connection about Bear! When you know you know. ❤ And then …………………”we kiss a lot!” My heart smiled so big🥰🥰🥰
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SMART BOYS!!! THAT'S AWESOME!!! 🥰😘🥰😊🥰🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Your family loves Bear. Please know all of your viewers love him too. He Is Loved! There is another youtuber I follow a few hours north of you - they have a nursery and a German Shepherd named Brynna. She, like Bear, lives the life! Just pure love! ❤❤❤ Thank you again Jess for taking us along.
finding out about bear's siblings is the sweetest thing ive heard in a long time
Here in Canada -11 is T-shirt weather lol. Oddly enough this winter, we’ve been averaging single digit weather. It’s so crazy! I must say even without The usual green of your farm it still looks enchanting!❤
There's so much happiness in this video. From Bear and siblings to everything coming together in your greenhouse to y'alls future house. I love it!
A Bear and siblings reunion would be so sweet.
Jess, we who have “that” dog, get it 100%.
🥰 Bear has a sister and a brother! AND you have a hose!!!
I totally got teary-eyed, dogs are such a gift in life.
Aw, that's the sweetest thing about finding Bear's siblings! It took me years to get over the loss of my childhood dog, but a few years ago I fell instantly in love with a boxer at a pet store rescue. He was more than likely used as a bait dog before we adopted him, and just skin and bones. He "ate" three couches due to separation anxiety within the next few years, but he fit a space in my heart that I didn't think another dog would ever fit. I don't know that I'll ever have another dog like those two again. I "get" your excitement and understand that connection that you can't really explain.
I had a cat like that, the most rewarding relationship in my life.
I can relate to that, My boy kitty Ariel that I have had now for 15 years is the best fur friend I have ever had.
That’s a very cool story about Bear’s siblings! Great progress! Hope all are feeling better! Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
I'm in NS. What province r you? Hope not one of them that hit hit with the Polar Vortex!
In NS it's been warmer than Jessica's place 4 daytime highs.
Thank you for sharing Jess. Very fun that you found Bear’s litter mates, and hearing they both have some traits like Bear. Be blessed.❤️✝️🙏
My sweet Edie was my heart. She was a flat coated retriever. She was with us for 11 years and followed me everywhere I went. She was my comfort, my friend and my fur-love. She's been gone from this earth for a long time, though lives in my memories and my heart everyday. ❤️❤️
Jess, that is absolutely the coolest thing ever! It's amazing how small the world is on the internet!
Jess, your 'twice in a lifetime' dog story warms my heart and gives me hope. My 'once' in a lifetime dog---a Chesapeake named Mandy----was our family's dog growing up, and crossed the rainbow bridge decades ago now. I still think of her every day. Since moving out of my parents' home, I have yet to become a pet parent, due to work schedules, 'no animal' rules with landlords, etc. But very soon, I will be in a position to finally have a dog!! And it's crossed my mind--"will I love it as much as I did/do Mandy". I adore all dogs, and have had the good fortune to love several throughout my adult life--friends, family's pets---they were all great in their own ways, but in my heart did not compare to my long-ago Chessie. While I am very much looking forward to having animals again, I know none of them will ever be my Mandy---but hearing your "Bear' experience tells me lightning can indeed strike twice. Fingers crossed. LOL
“Good dogs” mean trained dogs. They just don’t happen which many kid dog owners don’t know because the parents trained it then they allow their dogs to develop bad behavior
People tend to blame the dog or excuse the dog. Instead of doing the HARD work of having boundaries and keeping them. Barely dogs today are a dime a dozen as people don’t know the basics and allow bad behavior as they don’t care that they are part of society.
Please learn how to train a dog. Can not tell you how our neighborhood is terrorized by unsocialized untrained dogs that actually hurt and scare people.
Dogs that are highly trained and socialized have more freedom and they are more content.
Also dogs are not people or children which is the first wrong assumption bad pet owners project onto their dogs.
Good luck!!!
@@Lifetimelearningisbrave Am keenly aware of all you mention. OF COURSE, proper training is KEY. Equally key is the animal's temperament, which is unique unto the animal itself. And level of intelligence, which can vary greatly amongst breeds. The list goes on, as you know. LOL I entered my Chessie in several agility/dog show competitions, just for fun, since I knew her strengths/attributes, and how she'd enjoy dock diving and prancing around a ring. LOL In that particular dog's case, it was far more her temperament and level of intelligence than any extensive training. Every animal is different, and it's up to the 'pet parent' to pay close attention, and act accordingly....communicate and train. I plan on having the same breed--Chesapeake Bay Retriever---since their general characteristics mesh well with my lifestyle...but who knows whether the new dog will have all those traits (my first one did, across the board, every last one) or just a few, or none at all?? We shall see. I appreciate your insight, as it is great advice for anyone who has pets in their lives. :) I strongly believe we don't give our domestic pets enough credit in their levels of intuition and intelligence.....they understand far more than most give them credit for, and can be directed/focused away from bad behaviors. :)
Good to see Lulu, have not seen her for months, more plz😁
In my “neck of the woods” we call it making hay while the sun shines. 🙂
Oh Jess!!😊 Bear's story mad me tear up with excitement for you.❤ I can totally relate too. I had a 19 ½ year old black lab named Bucko that passed in my arms and that day forever lives in my heart.❤ Now I have litter mate huskadores, Ozzy and Earsha, whom I love sooo very BIG!!!❤ They just turned 8 years old and are my soul babies forever, as my sweet Bucko is.❤ Thank you for sharing your story with us and for taking us along with you on your walk. I could listen to you all day.❤ Still think you're a rock star girly!! Much love and God bless you!!❤🙏
I adore Bear. And I love the story about how you got him just as much. Maybe some day you will retell it. So inspirational.
It's funny. Years ago we had a black lab, Gabby 🥰😪. We went to the vet and in the parking lot another man was there with his black lab. My husband and I were like- wow! He looks just like our dog! Come to find out, they were in fact litter mates.
She was an amazing dog and I still miss her.
Blessings to you and everyone else, as always.
Jeremiah not really being a dog OR tomato person is the funniest thing to me 😂 you love each other so well!
This is where genetics is shining through. Congratulations on finding his liter mates. Always a good thing to know he and his siblings are amazing companions.
Exactly! That is so important!Carefully breed dogs (dose not have to be pure breeds) or rescues that what I say❤️ I mean bear was from an accidental litter but evidently his genetics are really good ❤️
Loved the Bear story. What a wonderful connection to have for such a wonderful dog.
"If you know, you know." Truly!
My once in a lifetime dog was my childhood dog Toby. He was such a fantastic dog.
If you know, you know! I do, and I appreciate you sharing your love and connection to Bear and his littermates. Dogs rule. It may sound dramatic, but dogs have saved my life more than once. Kindness, nurturing, empathy in buckets and never asking for more than a belly rub in return.
I had my bear for 10 years he was half pit bull half boxer and he was the absolute best dog I have ever had, he passed away this last year before I had my baby and I was so incredibly torn apart. He was my everything, my first baby I still cry for him. We got him cremated and we have him with us ❤
Hey Jess, that is totally small world❣️
Hurray water in the Greenhouse ,Epic🎉.
Congratulations Boys on making the
Honor roll🎊🎈!
JO JO IN VT 💞
Such synchronicity…loved hearing about the dog siblings ❤!
"It smells like life in here." ❤
Jess….your story makes my heart SMILE!!!! Thank you!!!!!!
That's so cool to make that connection with Bear's sibling's owner. My once-in-a-lifetime dog was a 100 pound blonde lab named Molly. She loved to ride in the car, sit in our lap, and she also slept on her back, and loved to hog the a.c. vent. 😂 We had her for 12 years, until she passed 4 years ago. For a long time after that, I could still hear her everywhere in the house. 💔
I love when I'm watching videos and I can't decide if that's your rooster making a racket or mine😂
That's awesome about Bear's siblings! 💖 So sweet! I am so excited to watch the progress of your home being built. What a lovely piece of himself to gift his family. Miah, you're awesome!
At Costco today they had two different sizes of premade green houses on display. I am still early in my classroom with no outdoor space to utilize a green house. Still fun to look and dream. Will be adding plumbed with a hose to the list of dream set up for the future garden ❤
"We kiss a lot." 😂❤
That is so awesome to find his siblings, I hope they get a meet up, maybe a zoom gathering or something. I know my husband is so connected to his Shepard/malenwa. Our lab Bentley is truly dear to me. He is so many things to me. Both dogs remind me of dogs I've had before. Maybe that's what you talking about, the connection between a dog you used to have and the one you have. Pretty great thing 😎❣️😎
It makes me think of what our lineage can pass on as individuals. And how what we pass on as a family or a community, can create such a widespread impact in little unknown ways. Our pieces of good can fit into so many people's lives and cause them to experience something profound.
Dogs are the best angels ever. Blessed is the human that has a soul mate dog. Dogs are just special. ❤❤
Why did I get goosebumps while you were telling the story about Bear’s siblings?! 😊
So happy to hear you found Bear's siblings ❤️🐾❤ A sweet dog is such a blessing. Our 95lb 2yr old pup is the heart of our family and knowing his sister and brother has made this litter even more special. And yes they all lay on their backs to sleep with all 4's up in air! 😅
I think you should write a book about Bear's family journey.
I hired a dog-sitter off Rover on a whim one night when I was going out and it ended up that she walks my dog's brother! Total fluke but so cool. We have met up many times now to walk them together and she has become a good friend 🥰
Hi Jess. Dogs are our family. Now your 4 legged family is extended. Yay. Life without dog has an empty space in my opinion. Congrats to the boys enjoy dinner out. And I know you’ll love that new hose. ! Aren’t you a lovely lucky gal with that talented hubby! Can’t wait to watch the house come to life
I love how excited you get when you plant pop!
I love all your pothos in your window!!! You should do a houseplant tour at some point House plants are my winter garden
I absolutely love the story of Bear's siblings. That is so amazing. I would be jumping for joy and excited for weeks over something like that.🥰
Wow! A honor roll is great! Bear’s sibling story is amazing! The power of the internet.
Jess just want to add your having a great hair day, loving the color , it looks so healthy !
That story about Bear's siblings is very cool!
Congratulations to your sons on making Honor Roll!!
That really is cool about Bear!!! As they say…..it’s a small world !!!
Love discovering what is nature and what is nurture, people and pets. It is so cool that you found Bear's siblings and that they have personality and quirks in common. Wow you got as cold as we have been lately and I am in the frozen north, lol. We usually stay at -5 to -10 with a wind chill most of the winter.
Congratulations to the boys on their dedication to education!!!
OMG 😮 What a totally cool story! 🐶❤
Aww that’s such a sweet story about Bear and his siblings 🥹 My soulmate cat was the absolute sweetest and my best friend has her sister. I’ll never forget her (she passed last year) and whenever I see her sister I am reminded of how amazing and loving she was ❤
I’m always here for the Bear content. 😊
The story about Bear and his siblings is an awesome story. So cool. Thank you for sharing.
My son and I have brothers. Their temperaments are similar. They lay on their sides and cross their front legs wrapping the top leg around the bottom one. After 5 years of living miles apart we now live next door with no fence between us. Willy comes over to spend time with Thor. They are besties. I’m so fortunate to be Thor’s person.
“Synchronicities” are so fun to find. How cool. I bet it made their day too!
Everyone always thinks they have the best dog. And none of them are wrong. 🐾
I'm really intrigued by microgreens, especially with our shorter growing season here in Minnesota. I'm really looking forward to you sharing about that. Growing up, we had a little shop in our Mall that would have sprouts on their sandwiches, and I still crave them today. From what I know, sprouts are a bit different than microgreens. My body has always craved that real earthy taste from things like fresh broccoli. Also, your house building is so romantic to me. Makes me think of The Notebook, which makes me bawl like a baby every single time. Spring still feels a ways away here, but I'm enjoying dreaming of the garden and it'll be here soon enough.
That is thee sweetest thing ♥️😭
How fun to wake up and discover something so special like that. Also LOL’ing when you said “anddd we kiss a lot 😂😂😂”
This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. How awesome to come across people like that.
I just recently had to put my Great Dane down then a few months later at my work a new employee just had a litter of Great Dane puppies. Jasmine came home and her brother and her sister went to two other employees. So we are watching each sibling grow and play dates. So much fun. Enjoy your channel so much.
Totally understand this video about Bear. My last dog was definitely my and my husband’s soulmate. We lost him almost 2 years ago and we are waiting for that connection to happen again. So say a prayer that God sends us our new soulmate. 🙏🙏🙏
What are the odds of someone watching with litter mates of Bear...??? that's truly awesome, I totally know what your saying about if you know you know. What a blessing! Love this. xoxo
Hi Jess, I enjoyed the visit this morning. So many sweet findings. Exciting that you found Bear’s family, so sweet. Congrats to all the guys for getting all A’s… yay y’all! Blessings to your family 🙏🏻🩷
One year my friend's brindle cattle dog made an unplanned breeding with her basset hound. Several years later I walked into a veterinarian's office and saw this homely adorable brindle spotted basset hybrid, and I knew what litter it had come from. The owner confirmed it as soon as I inquired, and I had fun calling my friend to tell her I saw her pup.
Today it’s 36°Celsius in Central Queensland, Australia at 54% humidity. It’s cyclone season. It’s a mowing party here atm, all the dams are full, the grass is growing so fast I can almost see it growing in real time. You guys are beautiful, I love watching your vids, real people warm my heart ♥️
That’s so exciting for Bear!! They can have a family reunion. I’m having this whole story in my head of how it will go down haha
I love the Bear family reunion, maybe a meet up in the future. Water in the green house is great, you may have to change or lower the ceiling for heat retention
Beautiful story!!!! ❤ Those special doggos sure win over our hearts! Lost my Lollie after 16 years. She was my first child. Also my pup Luna is not doing to great right now. Emotional time for us 😢 on a lighter note, your greenhouse is just stunning, I love watching your progress. You inspire me so much with your stories, I love your content- thanks for all that you do!
It would be so cool to see them together and see if they recognize each other. Very cool!
I've always loved Bear. He is such a special dog. Cool to hear about his backstory and sibs. :)
It would be so Fun if Bear & his siblings could reunite - I wonder if they would remember each other🤗 - I can so smell the high tunnel🤗 I think you’re about 6 weeks ahead of my growing time - using you as a help to when to start👍🏼
So sweet! I love your dog story.
My “soul dog” was Heidi. She was a Lhasa mix. She loved massages…I would put lotion on her belly and she would fall asleep. When someone would come over she would run to them and roll over on her back and pee all over herself. Then I would bathe her and always used the hair dryer on her with a soft brush and of course the lotion…my husband said Heidi had me wrapped around her little paw. I silently agreed with him, yes but it was a very good wrap!!❤❤❤
Love the dog story 🥰 I ran into a lady with one of my dogs pups at the gas station! They had very unique colors and markings (Red Heeler & Samoyed mix) so was easy to spot! Fun connecting and always a relief to know the pups got a good home
😍Awww I absolutely love that story 💕
Rosie is my soul dog ❤ I was so excited when I found her littermate. We used to do doggie play dates with her brother before we moved. I still keep in touch with the family online now.
Sweet Jess, I absolutely loved this story about Bear, and his siblings. I truly think it's cool your able to share with the other owners stories, and pictures of the siblings.
I'm excited for both you, and Sweet Miah on building your first home from scratch together. I can't wait until you break ground.
Life is good, blessings to you❤
I love serendipity 😊
Yay for water in the greenhouse!
And the thing about construction is, it can always be redone.
So happy for a Bear vlog! I lost my soulmate dog a couple of years ago after having him for almost 11 years.
I'm lucky enough to have the best dog buddy ever. He's half collie and half Anatolian Shepard and Great Pyrenees. He's a big guy but has such a kind soul. He's the best dog I've ever had, and he is having his 6th birthday next month.
You have such a precious heart❤. Thank you for sharing with us😊
HI Sweetie!
Just moi again! I had tears too about BEAR'S story! So cool 4 sure!
You know what we all r thinking what wld even b cooler!!! Have a dog reunion! I know they wld know each other!
When we got our last dog Amber ( a beautiful Irish Setter) sho is gone now.
( Still miss her so)❤
It broke my heart 2 take her away from her only sister! We revisit her natural Mthr and sister whom they kept yrs later. ( A.ling drive, we stay one night, then returned home next day) , but was sooooo worth it.
Then the breeder brought her sister our way and they just laid beside each other, no emotions as much. Maybe they knew it was their last.
