- “As a rule the only mantra used in this Sadhana is that of the Mother or of my name and the Mother’s.” Sri Aurobindo, On Himself, Cent. Edn., Vol.26, p.511
"Om Ma Sri Aravinda" is the combination of the sanskrit names of Brahman (OM), Mother (Ma) and Sri Aurobindo (Sri Aravinda).
Sri Aurobindo tells us: "The japa is usually successful only on one of two conditions - if it is repeated with a sense of its significance, a dwelling of something in the mind on the nature, power, beauty, attraction of the Godhead it signifies and is to bring into the consciousness, - that is the mental way; or if it comes up from the heart or rings in it with a certain sense or feeling of bhakti making it alive, - that is the emotional way. Either the mind or the vital has to give it support or sustenance."
The mantra is chanted 108 times, so that it can be used as an audio japa. Thus almost the entire counsciousness che be focused on the right mental or emotional state.
Again Sri Aurobindo tells us: "The function of a mantra is to create vibrations in the inner consciousness that will prepare it for the realisation of what the mantra symbolises and is supposed indeed to carry within itself."

Hey just wondering what the source was for this mantra - I have heard of simply ‘Sri Aurobindo Ma’ but not ‘Om Ma Sri Aravinda’. Thanks very much.
I heard it with this exact intonation and found it beautiful, afterwards I checked if Mother and Sri Aurobindo had said something about it and I could not find anything.
Sri Aurobindo has said that any combination of their Names can be used for mantra and Om is the Supreme according to the Mother.

What is the difference between calling Sri Aurobindo Mira and Ma Sri Aurobindo? Absolutely nothing. Both are one. Om adds to the adoration. Let us cede such questioning attitude and dip in to devotion at least while we listen to these mantras.
