Schumann is at his best with chamber music and lieder - the small-scale pieces. Dichterliebe is such a great cycle, and this quintet has long been a favorite of mine.
Robert and Clara studied Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, Book 1. I think the Quintet is based on No. 7 in E flat., and of course, it's dedicated to her. It's such a powerful love gift.

Tout le monde joue cette oeuvre comme si Schumann était un compositeur classique, alors que c'est avant tout un romantique ! L'arrivée du thème tendre , tout de suite après la fougue du début, n'est absolument pas préparée et c'est comme ça dans la plupart des versions. Je m'emmerde dans celle ci comme dans les autres.
Quite simply the finest Piano Quintet ever written. And this is the best performance of it I’ve seen. From all instrumentalists. Martha is, in my opinion, the greatest pianist of all time, bar none.

Astounding performance by everyone! This quintet combines Schumann's Romantic lyricism with his ingenious polyphonic conversations between instruments and sweeping lines. The music is very literally "alive" in the hands of these artists, and how appropriate to be shared internationally from Israel, the most special land on earth!
