Stunning piece of music that helds it time in History...30 years old and simply beautiful... Russell Ferrante is pinnacle of musicianship... Leaves so much space in his playing and just knows what to play/when ;-) and how cool are the modulations thru the bridge then bang straight back into the original key ;-) Musicality at its best ;-)
It took almost 20 years for me to find this piece. I always searched "The Dream" by Yellowjackets (instrumental/cover/sax/etc.) to no avail. Thank you so much for uploading this, I can now put my search to rest.
I have been trying to find this cut for at least 20yrs or more! I always thought it was the dream as well. I saw the Yellow Jackets perform this live in Seattle and I never forgot that great concert! Thanks for this great post!
I remember hearing this song on CD101.9 from NYC. I don't live in that city but the reception on my radio was very good since I live in the Philadelphia area. I own this on cassette and love it! These guys rock!
I miss CD101.9 tremendously. It was the best station on the East Coast. They do have a Facebook page now which I am a member of. Because of CD101.9, I was introduced to so many talented musicians and went out and bought the cassettes which I still own. Some on cd, too. I would love to see the Yellowjackets in concert!
Back in the 90's 'we had smooth jazz 106.1 but they disbanded and now its a pop station and they suck. I miss CD101.9 so much. I wish someone would bring the 90's back. I am just grateful I found that station when I did in 1989. I was in awe with it. We need a smooth jazz station in NYC or Philly again. Bring back the great music and get rid of that pop crap.
The best song from my favorite album!! Why is Politics so hard to find?! Spotify has every album but this one. So, THNX for the Post! The Russo Altissimo soars on this one!
Politics is not hard to find. The recording company are not making anymore money on it that is why they stop printing it. However u can find it on the AMAZON. Very pricy but they are there a lot
Amazing...this is their best song. I was so lucky to see them years ago when Robbin Ford, Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip were with them. What an amazing show. Thank you for the post...
Hi. Thank you for posting this. Have been searching for this for ages. I live here in England, and way back home in the Philippines, my cousin has a Jazz bar in Manila & when this was played, I just fell in love with this song, so uplifting. That was a good 10 years or more ago if I recall. Anyways, Thank you and Kindest regards... Thumbs up...
Just a really cool tune. The playing is superb for such a straightfoward piece. What really makes it for me is from 3:50 onward, when that clang off the ride cymbal bell interspersed with the high hat chicks propels the song towards its end..magical and hypnotic.
When this was released, I was working at a large cd and record store which would play new jazz recordings on Saturdays, featuring a local jazz DJ who would do a mock broadcast over the store P.A.
I used to work at The Wave 102.5 in Tampa Bay, and we played a lot of Yellowjackets music, but this and "Mile High" were always my favorite. I've always thought Marc Russo shredded on sax, but he never got the respect he deserved, imho. Thanks for posting. :-)
@@stpaulamechurch7060 i grew up listening to it, and it ended up being my first job after college. A dream. Sadly, we lost Carson Cooper recently. It was an honor to work with a guy I'd admired when i was young, especially sincere my style probably "borrowed from" his a little. Nick van Cleve, mostly, but a lot of Carson. For all of us, though, thanks for the compliment.
What turned me on to fusion was the good fortune to hear station WRVR 106.7 FM in the NYC area throughout the 70's. Legendary jazz DJ/historian Les Davis laid the groundwork as for musicians/bands/individuals to check out & my instincts took over in finding the good vinyl tunes in record shops of the day. The station changed to a country format in 1980. CD 101.9 kind of replaced WRVR in format at some point, but it wasn't really the same.
Saw The Yellow Jackets at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center ,New York City. (June 24th.,1989) Russell Ferrante, piano♫♪♫ Mark Russo, sax ♫♫♫ Jimmy Haslip, bass ♫♪♫ George Kennedy, drums.♫♪♫ Great Show.!!! 2019 Love The Music) Gracias / Thanks.
Love this song.also loved the singing version by Full Swing but cant find it.i knew id regret tossing tjat cassette player. Its about the only tune utube missed for me.
Por fin te encontré. Y veo en los comentarios que no soy el único que te llevaba en la memoria durante décadas, escurridiza y memorablemente emocionante melodía. Por fin pude ponerte nombre.
i know somebody sang this, low male voice, sounded like art garfunkel or kenny rankin. can't recall, as i've said i was looking for this song for years.
All due respect to the reworked version 'The Dream' which was sang brilliantly by Michael Franks on 'Live Wires' but for me the original version is the best because its so powerful that it delivers a hell of a punch with hard hitting drumming from Kennedy, the muscular sax playing of Russo, a funky Haslip bassline and lush sounds courtesy of Ferrante. Easily one of the best songs from 'Politics'
I remember hearing this on "Jazz Moods/The Jazz Show w/ David Sanborn" back in the late 80s on Richmond (VA) radio station WRXL - 102 every Sunday evening at 8pm Eastern. I would like to find the playlist they had because there were some songs I remember and can't identify the title/artist - just the sound of it :)
Someone did a vocal version of this song years back. The lyrics were awesome. ....."you knew he'd go all the way." "Pride of Cottonwood Idaho..." Can anyone tell me how to find that version? I've looked all over the web and can't find it.
Iv'e had this album over twenty years haven't played it since i bought it. can't find it on itunes but im seriusly considering selling it IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Because Spotify is to hard to use for old people like me. Likewise with iTunes, garage band etc. played piano all my life. 78 now. Have 4:44 all these apps and never been able to figure out how to use. No young people in my sphere to teach me.
It's all a matter of taste and perspective. I happen to love Michael Frank's version, in addition to this one by the Yellowjackets. It's unfortunate your take on Michael Franks is so harsh and limited.
The pulse of Jimmy Haslip's bass is breathtaking!!!
And if you watch him playing it reverse, it blows your mind too
@@nickdrake5611 I did it :)
Heartbreakingly beautiful.
at last i found this great song from the yellow jackets it was a memory of a great time
Great jazz music in the late '80s, memories..
first time i heard this was in '88...during my wedding reception...those were good times!
Great 80's jazz! I used to play this song while traveling on the highway in my 20's taking in the sights!
+harry dee me too...

I love this music and Michael Frank's vocal version of it, "I have a dream...".
I love Jimmy Haslip's understated bass playing on this. Very tasteful.
Essa Trilha Sonora é Da Rede Globo 1992?
@@viniciuslacerdamontagenses7381 the bassline is not understated. its perfect.
Always loved the Yellowjackets-Great !

Just loving the drum mix on this track. So much room. Feels so powerful to listen to as the sax soars. This is just one beautiful song.

I listened to that station at the Jersey shore. One of the 1st "smooth" jazz stations

In my spanish: lo escuché cuando era chico en Argentina. Y me trae a la mente muchos recuerdos. Vuelvo por pocos minutos a mis 10 años de edad.
The Best
I consider this their greatest song!
I like Mile High even better
What a band! What talent! What a song! Simply magic!
Everything is fitting. Not too much, not too little.
I love this cover as much as the singing cut.everyone did a great job.
This is not the cover, this is the original version. Michael Franks remade the vocal version and renamed it “The Dream”.
Thank you
tnx for the up!! this one and "The Turtle And The hare" are my favourite from this album!
Groove. Plain and simple.💯❤️
I've waited so long for this song. Thanks.
Great tune.
Even in Azerbaijan we like this song.

i fancy the version by Full Swing on their "The End of the Sky" album.
Hi there, greetings from Jakarta. Thanks for uploading this song, really remind me of my juvenile memory :)
i know somebody sang this, low male voice, sounded like art garfunkel or kenny rankin. can't recall, as i've said i was looking for this song for years.
Someone did make a vocal version of this song but it is long out of print. Wish I could find it.
The Dream by Michael Franks?

Wow! It Moves at the speed of sound thats true....
wonderful!
So, so, clean, but mean!
@Maestro1617 thank you!!
Why does this remind me of *"All My Children"* in the early '90s??
Sintonia de despedida del genial programa "Espacio en Blanco" de RNE
One of their best songs in my opinion, but even better is the live version with Michael Franks on vocals. The live version !
I too found it very difficult to find this song. These guys are from the bay area unfortunately Mark Russo left the band he is the sax player.
Does anyone remember this song with lyrics done by Fullswing? I’ve had the hardest time finding it, along with this one also! Thank you in advance!

+Deirdre Phillips That version is called "The Dream" by Michael Franks
The track you're looking for is from Full Swing's album "The End of the Sky".
On the Dragonfly Album, released 1993.
That is the verison by Full Swing from End of The Sky. It is rare. So many have requested that song, and album I may upload it.
Michael Franks transforms this song from something great into something magnificent :)
Agree !!
SHOW !!!!!!!
Y hasta aquí el Espacio en Blanco de hoy
finally found the right title...
Iv'e had this album over twenty years haven't played it since i bought it. can't find it on itunes but im seriusly considering selling it IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT

Michael Franks did a version...just can't recall the name of the tune...Don't think it was Local Hero..
+John Mcnoriell , the name of it is The Dream
+John Mcnoriell Yes you're correct. His was the first version of this song that I remember.
YJ release 1988; MF version 1993 on Dragonfly album. :)
Espacio en blanco

I'm glad u liked it!
MARK RUSSO is awesome!!!!!!!!! To see an awesome solo search for the live version of Huey Lewis - Trouble In Paradise
why is this the only album by The Yellowjackets NOT on Spotify ?!?!
Because Spotify is to hard to use for old people like me. Likewise with iTunes, garage band etc. played piano all my life. 78 now. Have 4:44 all these apps and never been able to figure out how to use. No young people in my sphere to teach me.
For some strange reason this seems to not be available digitally in any form....
You have to buy the CD. You can get it
