In Hindu mythology, we start an auspicious occasion with the name of Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed God, in hopes that we would remove any obstacles on the path to success. Shruti will begin this auspicious evening with a composition of Papanasan Shivan where the poet offers prayers and obeisance to Lord Ganesha, who is the dear son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy, the remover of obstacles, and the lover of modakam (sweets). Lord Ganesha is described as the one with a pleasing appearance whose handsome body is adorned by a snake. He is the one endowed with supernatural powers and the master of all Ganas (demi-gods).
