    I am a self taught piper in North Texas. Over 10 years ago, I wanted to learn the pipes but had no local teachers. Learning resources were somewhat limited back then. I used "Bagpipe Solutions" by John Cairnes and whatever I could find online. I have played in church and for various memorial services locally and my piping is "ok". I have recently discovered your channel and all I can say is Wow! Your teaching, pdf's and explanations are the best! I am now in the process of "unlearning" and "relearning" many of the things that I thought I knew. Your explanations as to the timing of the embellishments and the effect that you are looking for with them are like the "light bulb" turning on in my head. I wished that I had started out with your teachings. Thank you again!

    These videos and exercises are an immense help, I've been playing my Blair Digital chanter, I haven't played the "big" pipes in a while, but now I'm getting back to them, I am quite rusty.
    As much as I love the electronic chanter, you can't really "feel" the change in notes like you would with a practice chanter or pipe chanter, so you could unknowingly develop bad habits and find your way barreling towards many pitfalls if you are not careful.

    It just dawned on me something you do that is really good. When I learned the doublings, my instructor didn't give me an introductory talk about what they are, what we were trying to achieve, that they could be altered or even what note I was playing - maybe he assumed I'd know? - All I have to do now is overlay the finger movements I know for doublings with notes that I am hitting. Does that make sense?

    • @gregoryalee2457
      @gregoryalee2457 3 роки тому

      In other words a little class work ahead as you do in this video would have given me a "road map", if you will, on the how's and where's instead of just diving in. As in here is a "G" doubling, here is the "A" doubling. I know how to do the "A" doubling but I didn't realize it was an "A" doubling. Maybe I am slow, sometimes though.

    Thanks for this lesson Matt. I'm having a difficult time with the D doublings in Blair Drummond and The Mason's Apron. Am I misreading the music for these tunes because my D Doublings don't sound like they should? Especially the multiple back to back D Doublings in Blair Drummond. It would be awesome if you'd demonstrate.

    The issue that I've had with doublings, and other embellishments/gracenotes in general, is that in my mind the two grace notes are where my mind hears but-ton as opposed to the actual melody note. Years of playing other wind instruments have taught me that all notes are additive as opposed to subtractive gracenotes to create the illusion of rests and rhythm on bagpipe. Do you have any advice for beginning pipers to change this thought process?

    • @MattWillisBagpiper
      @MattWillisBagpiper  2 роки тому

      Great question! Hmmm... I think when you realize that the gracenotes are more percussive in their function than tonal it becomes easier to regards them as the tools/process in which melody notes occur (including the short melody notes within our embellishment, like the middle C in a C Doubling or both of the Low G's in a Grip or Taorluath), you'll stop thinking of the active gracenotes in a melodic way. If that makes any sense.

    Matt, I love your videos.
    I honestly think you’d be even bigger if you changed your channel name ..... it would actually be your title ... and an honor to have this title.
    You should be known to the world as “The Bagpipe Nerd” , before you take it as an insult, think about that......it’s possibly the best name for marketing ever created.... take it now before Andrew Douglas sees this and uses it for his name.

    • @MattWillisBagpiper

      No offense taken, but do I come across nerdy? The bigger problem is re-branding. You can't readily rename a UA-cam channel. Hmmm...

    Hey Matt, would you please make a video on how to setup drone reeds. How to stop them from weezing, how to make them good for striking up and cutting off etc. Would help me a lot and I’m sure a lot of people would benefit from it

    • @MattWillisBagpiper
      @MattWillisBagpiper  4 роки тому +1

      Well, it's not completely comprehensive, but better than nothing: ua-cam.com/video/lBotVgTWIPs/v-deo.html
      As for wheezing, there really isn't a fix, unfortunately. And what I mean is the cause of the wheeze can be different from reed to reed. Sometimes opening them up will fix the wheeze. Other times it'll make it worse. And vice-versa. And sometimes, they just wheeze (I've had to throw out otherwise perfectly good reeds for their wheezing).
