Hi Mark, great to see your drone shots at Trimontium this summer. In answer to your question at the end about doing more to share the history of the site, this was exactly why the Trimontium Trust was set up nearly 30 years ago. www.trimontium.co.uk The Trust put up the boards and maps you use in your film and run an excellent museum in Melrose town centre, as well as give guided walks on the site. Perhaps you could add their website to your film (even just as credits for the material you use). I’m sure they’d give you an interview too if you want more detail on the finds. Best wishes, George Gordon

George Gordon I’ll do that George.
I did email the trust from their website contact link with the film but heard nothing back.
I have made a good few films about the Romans in the Borders now all of which have been very popular.
I agree the museum in Melrose is fantastic and the staff are excellent.
Will contact you later as I am out filming just now.

Hi George are you connected with the Trimontium trust?
Do you think they would have any interest in using any of my material or having something made by me to promote the site?
Like I said I get a huge interest in these Roman films a lot from overseas (some from Rome itself ha ha)

Mark, You hit the nail on the head in your closing remarks. Why didn't the SBC plough money into Trimontium and promote it as a tourist attraction instead of squandering money on the tapestry project. Where are the artefacts you asked. Try Sir Wattie's house as he was like a womble for anything historic

Excellent, love the enthusiasm and passion you put into your commentary. Thought the way you combined the drone footage with other views/maps was great - did I spot a quick view of Saalburg :-) Have you tried Burnswark and the forts either side of the hill?

Never been down to Brunswark yet. Is there anything to see on the ground?
Pinched 1 photo if a signal station is that Saalberg? I don’t know?

@@MarkNicol123 From Google Earth it looks like there is a Roman 'siege' camp complete with artillery platforms either side of the hill. No one seems sure whether they are the real thing though or just the Romans building practice camps.

That drone footage is astounding! A real insight in to the past. It really is a shame that we have to wait for a drought to see it. Likewise, I wish the National Trust for Scotland would buy the fields at some stage and restore parts of the settlement.

    • @MarkNicol123

      Sam Guthrie totally agree Sam.
Cost would be astronomical I fear though

    • @sguthrie

Mark Nicol perhaps a guerrilla restoration under the cover of darkness then. By the time we're finished rebuilding the camp, the farmer will have come to terms with it

Another fascinating video mate, opening our eyes to the history of the Borders.
Those images of the fields were incredible!
My wife and I visit once a year to relatives near Lilisleaf, at a small hamlet called Cavers Carre. Been up the Eildons a few times and never knew they were hillforts!

    • @MarkNicol123
      @MarkNicol123  6 років тому +1

Andy Painting North Eildon was the hillfort. Evidence Over 250 huts have been found so far, the ramparts round the hill are still easily visible with the naked eye.
I know Cavers well, another little village packed full of interesting history.
      Thanks for watching!!

Been here a few times and there really is nothing to see, except crops. U really do have to transport ure self back in time to try and get a feel of the history. However, I will certainly watch this footage next time I am there to help my imagination wander. I live about 15 miles from here and he is right, the area should have a museum or exhibition onsite.

Yogi Haughton I’ve been here countless times and like you it has always just had to be an imagination job.
It was the greatest feeling standing there yesterday with the live images of the fort right in front of me, felt like going back in time.
      Cheers for watching!!

Said it time and time again about how much history is in the Scottish Borders and if used to our advantage it could draw in millions to the area. Yet they do nothing.

That was an awesome video Mark! I think your right there is an awful lot going on in this part of Scotland which isnt being utilised by the government or tourism industry. Excellent and well presented footage like this can only help further the cause hopefully! I'm sure there is much more out there as well that hopefully drones may give us an insight into in the near future.

It's incredible the sign the facility leaves behind. It's subtle but the echoes of that time are there. The signal station is a bit different from today's signals namely youtube. Great video. All the best. Mark

I agree that much more can be done to uncover and display our Roman past. The bathhouse at Roman Road, Bearsden is just one example. The Antonine Wall which ran from Old Kilpatrick to the Forth still has many features on display. An opportunity to provide a day tour for visitors

Humps ??? More like camels 🐪 camels 🐪 and what’s the rest we don’t see there must be so much interconnected catacombs and temples un hampered and as beautifully preserved as first commissioned, the Alps a place called postonia caves in Lubiana jus north east of Triest Italia , the very eastern toes of the Alps , vast amphitheater’s habitat places of worship all sorts of early civilisation and shaped sculpt solid rock , I’m near certain our own isles here in Great Britain must have huge secrets within her Earths , I dunno why we not allowed I feel ! If we have mystery above our holy grounds and or sacred as you show us , so respectfully might I add , one can only wonder where you might take us beneath ! Simply breathtaking is your info of what you portray , a real genius so you are ,you remind me how stupid I’ve been not to visit sooner when in my youth
