I bought a 2113 SG exactly like yours 2 years ago. It was advertised as a 61 reissue. I always wondered if it was legit. It is light weight and plays and sounds better than the SG Standard it replaced. I would have loved to see this video before I bought this 2113 SG Standard. I paid &1000.. Canadian for it which is not bad but being lied to is not good. Thanks for this great detailed video.
Yeah this is exactly why I made this video. I really love this model in particular and I can spot one at first glance, and I hate seeing them misrepresented. You did quite okay though. 1000 sounds like a fair price considering how inflated prices have become lately. I wonder if they will go back to normal. It's probably due to covid But yeah selling a std as a 61RI is definitely not okay, especially if they ask 1800 or more for them
Thank you for the explanations! Fun fact, another one to add (I think) the crown inlay on the 61 std Sg on the ‘19’s and newer actually looks to be in between the height of your 2013 and the where the crown inlay is on the 61 reissue. This would be another way to tell that one like mine (a 19 or up 61 std) is NOT a ‘61 reissue if someone tries to pull a fast one. I can’t tell 100% but it looks like your inlay is flush with the tuners at the top and the 61 reissue is obv higher. When I look at the one in front of me that crown looks to be a few millimeters above where yours sits but definitely lower than the 61 reissue. Thanks again!
Yeah, possibly. I haven't seen many 2019 and up 61 Standards up close to compare. These 2013s have a very pointy headstock, but still narrow - that's how I can spot them with just a glance. But the real 61RIs are still way bigger and the crown way higher yeah. Almost TOO big for my taste. Appreciate the comment
Awesome video Andre! I’ve been facing trouble on searching the informations about my 2012 61 reissue and your video just made all clear. Do you have the 2012 61 reissue specs, specifically about the neck profile… all goes to 60s slim taper (witch i love) but not sure about it.
Thanks, I like to use Wayback machine internet archieve to go back to a specific year of the Gibson website. You should find all info there. Neck is slim taper profile, yes
Thanks for the great content André! I’d be truly greatful to have your advice as I’m looking to buy my first SG and I can’t make up my mind between 2 options. First you need to know that they are being bought online which makes it even harder for me to choose as I can’t try them. First I was looking for a ‘61 Reissue for the thinner neck but also the other specs.. Neither of my two options are actual ‘61 RI but as I understand from your video, they’re Standards with « mostly ‘61 specs » Here all specs that they have in common: - both sold by the same store in the US - classic 57s pickups - Bateing pickguard - NOT the wide headstock - Grover tuners - SG plated trussrod cover - pickup selector has NO plastic treble/rythm plate and both have Black plastic tip (?) - Taller neck knee - Original hard shell case - Cherry red - Mint condition Here are the few differences: 2017: - Seller says it has a thinner « C » profile neck - 500$ less (seller says its only because he got a better price for it) 2018: - seller claims its a « medium C » neck profile (1st: 0,82’’ 12th: 0,88’’) which is 0,01´´ thicker than the Option A - 500$ more I’m waiting for the seller to get back to me with capacitors details. I want to make sure it has the thinner neck profile but couldn’t find much details about the C or Medium C neck types online for those years and I don’t even know if I can trust the seller about the accuracy of that info. Another thing that bothers me is the way he describes the pickups: 2017: Original Gibson PAF humbuckers 2018: Stock Gibson ‘57 classics I feel like it’s just the same way to describe the same pickups? Or am I missing out on something? Or maybe they have no idea what it is and they write whatever they think? Hope you can help with any insights based on your knowledge of these models/years or anyone who wants to share their thoughts I’d be happy to hear! Thanks !
Hi, I do think the seller is not 100% correct with the info. I always prefer to use the correct manufacturer terminology for guitar specs. The official Gibson website is always the best way to look - either the 'legacy' section of the main site or you can use the Wayback Machine (Google it) to go back in time and browse through the archieved pages of that specific year. 2017 and 2018 are pretty much identical in specs other than the pickups. Both are listed as "slim taper" necks - of course they vary a bit because they are shaped by hand and each guitar is slightly different. The "C" terminology makes sense but it's incorrect for this model - both are slim taper, but one slightly thicker than the other by chance. If you are specific about your neck being thin, ask for specific neck measurenents at the 1st and 12th fret. Pickup listed is also not accurate. If stock, the 2017 should have 57 classics and the 2018 should have 61R/61T. pickups
Oh he already gave the neck measurements - yeah the 2017 seems to be the thinner one, but that's just by chance and not really by spec. As for electronics, both have PCB inside the control cavity. Pot and cap values should be the same spec inside, other than tolerances. In theory, they are basically the same guitar other than cosmetic differences probably - namely the switch ring. I believe 2018 was the year they came without the ring. But of course each guitar will be different so it's a bit of a leap of faith buying online. But again, on paper they are very similar guitars. As for the pickups, 57s are Alnico 2 and 61s are Alnico 5. Good luck!
Apparently 61RIs cost 1999USD on Sweetwater, back in 2011-2012. These 2013 stds were really a bargain at the time. No wonder that only lasted for that short while. Imo considering the specs, the new Std 61 they make now are also a great value
The main difference between the current standard and standard 61 other than the guard is the hand wired pickups on the 61 vs PC board on the large guard standard. How much of a pain in the ***would it be to just get a standard and convert it to hand wired? Either way Different strokes for different folks
I have 2013 SG in Classic White, and i'll never sell it, amazing sounding, feeling and looking guitar. The only "sacrelige" i did is that i installed batwing pickguard, because i love the look more. Anyways, great year for Gibson
Most informative! Regarding the neck joints of a '61 Standard and the Batwing Standard, do you feel there is any difference in how stable it makes the guitar between neck and body? I think I read where Phil X said he liked a little more mass (larger heel joint), so guess that is why Gibson gave him the '64 SG where the neck joint is NOT down low at the 22 fret as you described. Again, really enjoyed the video as I'm currently looking at SG and can't decide between the '61 Standard or Standard (batwing pick guard). For some reason seems like the Standard and it larger heel would be more stable, but I don't know as I'm just guessing.
Yes the larger heel maybe is marginally more stable, but both are solid enough. IMO the better upper fret access def makes up for it. If you are sensitive about the neck flexing maybe it's a good idea to get the batwing, but honestly both are prone to have that issue anyway. It never bothered me, neither my previous 2007 batwing or on this one. A 64 still has the smaller joint though. The change happened in 66. Good luck! Imo you can't go wrong with either
Thanks for this video. Can I ask what is better deal? 2020 Gibson SG 61 brand new or just Gibson SG 61 reissue 2008? This from 2008 is 400€ less. Thanks.
Being practical - as stock, here are the specs New Std 61 - 500k audio taper pots all around, Orange Drop caps, nickel hardware, (faux) ABR1 bridge, lightweight aluminum tailpiece (or your choice of vibrola), lighter colored neck binding, 61R/T pickups, small headstock A 2008 61RI would have - 300k linear vol pots, chrome hardware, Nashville bridge, cream neck binding, heavier pot metal tailpiece, oversized headstock, 57 classics, REISSUE on the model name. Hardware, pups and electronics can be changed, so it all comes down to the particular feel of each guitar. For 400 less, yeah, I'd definitely think about getting the 2008 instead. Look at the spec differences and see if you think the upcharge for the new one is worth it. All things being equal I think both are great options and you can't really go wrong. If you can try the guitars before buying that would be a good way to chose Personally the 300k vol pots is the only thing that REALLY would annoy me, but that's easy and cheap to change. I'm a bit OCD about it. I like 500k vol pots. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Neither of my two options are actual ‘61 RI but as I understand from your video, they’re Standards with « mostly ‘61 specs »
Here all specs that they have in common:
- both sold by the same store in the US
- classic 57s pickups
- Bateing pickguard
- NOT the wide headstock
- Grover tuners
- SG plated trussrod cover
- pickup selector has NO plastic treble/rythm plate and both have Black plastic tip (?)
- Taller neck knee
- Original hard shell case
- Cherry red
- Mint condition
Here are the few differences:
2017:
- Seller says it has a thinner « C » profile neck
- 500$ less (seller says its only because he got a better price for it)
2018:
- seller claims its a « medium C » neck profile (1st: 0,82’’ 12th: 0,88’’) which is 0,01´´ thicker than the Option A

I have a 2009 '61 Reissue. Although it is a good guitar, it sure as hell isn't worth the $2000 that I paid. I have a LTD Eclipse that is just as good. Cost $500. Never again, Gibson! 😕🖕
Yeah def some great guitars for more competitive prices out there
