Cody did a wonderful job on that axe. A very nice addition to your stellar collection Dave! The ease with which you carved that piece in the vid and then made a wedge out of it, was pretty amazing, you could definitely see the ease with which that axe sliced through the wood, "like buttah"!

I guess my love affair with Norlund axes began in the 70"s. My Dad gave me a Norlund Hudson Bay hatchet when I was a boy. When I was a teen, Dad gave me the larger Norlund Hudson Bay axe, and that combo has served me well. I now own a few other Norlunds, and agree with you that they are great axes.

I had NO clue that Norlund axes were so well regarded! Funny story. Years ago I found an old hatchet head. Handle was gone. I liked the shape of it, so I kept it. That hatchet head rode around on the floorboards of my old Ranger pick up for years. A relative ended up wrecking my old '97 Ranger truck last year. As I was cleaning it out, I found that axe head. Since I was getting back into the woods I decided to clean it up and restore it. Researched the Norlund name and learned it was a great axe. I re-sign it and now it goes into the woods with me on every trip. I have learned a TON about proper use of axes from you and your students. Thank you!

I've been waiting for this video. It was cool seeing Cody haft that axe and now you using it.
You inspired me to rebuild axes a while back. I did some research on axe heads and found that if you can find a Norlund for a good price, you can produce something as good if not better than a wetterlings for a fraction of the price.
I've only rebuilt 2 axes, but both have been Norlund. I do have a video of my first axe on my channel with the head for my second. I kinda wish I didn't sand the red paint off the hudson bay now, but it was pretty worn and splotchy.

Great Vid Dave. For over a year I looked for a good Ax only to find that most forged Axes sold in this country are made in India. But then again you pay for what you get. cheap handles and semi good metal. But one day I was looking through TraditionalWoodworkers.com and came across a company named Mueller. They are from Austria. All their axes are hand forged and have been doing it since 1675. They are not cheap but they have lots of designs for different jobs. I got the Biber Classic hatchet and am very very pleased. check them out I think you will be pleased.

The story was that CanadianTire approached Mann to supply sports/outdoor axes and they came up with almost counterfeit name Norlund to sound similar to Norland of Scandinavia. Basically they produced the axes to compete (with cheap Swedish axes at the time) notably Hults Bruks with North American flavour. So CT the Canadian version of Walmart start to sell mediocre cheap Norlund axes. I find their handles are horrible and the steel is subpar to Swedish axes.😛

Have 2 Norlund Hudson Bay style axes, 1 with a 24" handle and another with 26" handle. The 26" has a slightly larger head, just enough that when you lay them side by side, you can see the difference. The 26 I recently purchased at an Antique dealers show for $15. You are quite right about the Cutting ability, with the 24" I have Knocked down 4 -5 " spruce trees with a Max of 4 swings. Thought that I was the only one that knew about the Norlund Hudson bay axe. Would take that over a large fixed bladed knife any day. All the Best

    @jeremya6739 9 років тому

Great video Dave, and Cody is a true craftsman! I have to admit that I like that little Norlund pocket axe, but I'd never use it. I just don't use hatchets, and I especially don't use double bit hatchets. I own several axes from Gransfors Bruks, S.A. Wetterlings & Husqvarna, but I own a total of only one hatchet, a Gerber Bear Grylls 'Ultimate Survival Hatchet'. I only bought that one because I really like the design and hope to one day have a replica of it made from a good high carbon steel like 1070 or maybe even 1095. (The Gerber version is made from crappy Chinese grade 3Cr13MoV stainless steel, but it's cheap, and I really do love the design.)
What I use are tomahawks. With a good hawk you've got all the utility of a hatchet with the bonus or some added versatility, and if you break the handle it's really easy to make another one in the field even if your only tool is the hawk head itself. I really like the Rifleman's Hawk & the Pipe Hawk from Cold Steel and both the Medium & Large Camp Axes from H&B Forge. (I have no idea why H&B calls them axes. Despite the name they are actually hawks.) If I need more cutting power than one of those four tomahawks can give me I just skip the hatchet and carry a real axe. That Norlund Hudson Bay pattern axe and even the double bit are both pretty sweet! If the prices on Ebay ever come back down again (or I find one for a good price somewhere else) I may have to get me one of those!!!

Anyone know what kinda steel they used for these axe heads? My Dad died a couple months ago, and he left me this cute little Hudson Bay hatchet. I didn’t even know about Norlund until I looked closely at this little hatchet and saw the stamped logo in the poll of it. I’m thinkin about restoring it now though, cause it’s gotten all rusty. The handle is NICE, too. Feels amazing in the hand. Though I don’t rightly know if it’s the factory handle or not.

Gonna pick up a new handle from Canadian Tire to sort of complete it's history, and bring her full circle.

Hi Dave. I just picked up a Norlund Hudson Bay Voyager hatchet today from a flea market. It is in very rough shape and the handle (which appears to be original) is virtually falling out. Before buying it I did some research and learned that the Canadian Tire co. commissioned Man Edge to build axe and hatchets for them who then became O.A Norlund. Until I saw my hatchet I never even heard of Norlund. After doing the research I realized that the Norlund products are top-notch. As nice as the antique look is, I want to restore it, re-hang it with a custom handle and bring this little gem back to life. I'm looking forward to using it in the field. I saw Wranglerstar's video on your axe handle before seeing this one and enjoyed both. Thanks.

I recently bought a Norlund 5lb axe with the original handle and mask at a flea market…FOR $20.00!!!! What a find! I was absolutely thrilled. I didn't know that they made these 5 pounders. It has been virtually unused, but unfortunately the handle is very loose and the head is a bit rusty. I'd like to keep it as a wall hanger, but it breaks my heart to see it covered in rust. I also found a Norlund small Voyageur hatchet, but after soaking it to remove the rust I discovered a hair-line groove in the blade (another heartbreaker). They are great additions to my collection. Thanks for these vids Dave.

Dave, it is funny to me that I have been subscribed to both you and Cody - Wranglerstar for about a year plus, when for the first time I had enough time and good enough internet to watch videos. I am about your age and have one Norlund double bit camp axe like the one you just showed. I did not realize until watching Cody in his series about rehanging your small double, that there was a difference in the profile of the 2 ends. Mine has been rehung several times and it now has been done in a fiberglass handle that holds up very well. Thank you for the education and ideas you provide! By the way, I purchased mine back in the late 1970's or early 1980's and have had it ever since. I also have a Hudson bay style single that was given to me by an Uncle who found it along the road, I actually think it predates Norlund. I can remember there were markings on it when I first got it, but I do not believe they are still there. It also has been rehung several times and now has a fiberglass handle.
I would suggest you not use the Norlunds with the stickers on them, I would think they would be more valuable because of the stickers.
I do have a question, the material used in rams for hydraulic cylinders, do you think that would make great material for axes and knives? If I ever settle into a home I want to set up a forge to make some for myself. By the way, I consider myself a jackass of many trades, they include Scientific Glassblower, Welder, Locksmith, and Woodworker.

I remember seeing the Norlund axe and hatchet on the back wall of the sporting good department in Wal-Mart in the early 70s. That being said I bought an axe in 73 for $8 if memory servers me correctly. I was 12 years old. They had the hatchet for $6. The axe was one of my first major purchases. I later acquired the hatchet in trade. Later in life I acquired two Norlund rock hammers. My axe is on its' fourth handle. I must admit I have not used the hatchet much to this day.

I saw Cody doin that handle a week or 2ago...& it looked familiar as the one I have. My uncle calls it a cedar axe. And its looking to be as the very same thing, dimensions and all. But as far as I know with the stamp still in check the handle is 21"long. Its comfortable with one hand and safer with two. It has its home next to the step on the hearth of the fireplace to cut up the squawh wood and cut the kindling up with. Sometimes to cut limbs of a feld tree. But few at that. My Grand dad always splitted up mesquite grubed up stumps from the pasture with them as well as those post cedar trees too. Great axes. The smaller blade of the stumper type in bulk small bit was used as hitting closer towards the dirt and the felling bit (thinner, longer) bit for chopping and cutting pieces. FYI. :) Enjoy seeing others like myself doing life I live also. Old ways are still king on heavy last than lite gor-tex but all have its valued place. But here on the ranch, old ways ...rules.

Hi Dave, and Happy Holiday's, until today, I couldn't find any info on my Norlund Hatchet, I searched, and searched, and I couldn't find any in the size hatchet I have, the wood handle need ' s to be replaced, that's why, if you can please can send me Cody's address, and a way I can talk to him, I would want him to hang my hatchet, it's a very small hatchet, not so much the handle, but the head, I think it's a Mini Hatchet, it's in excellent condition, and doesn't appear to ever been sharpened before, but it is very small, and I have big plan's for it, it's lite, and compact, the handle seem's to be of a small size, but larger than 12", the pictures don't say much, but before today, I never saw a size like mine, mine could even be smaller than the mini, is there any way we can talk, I would really appreciate it, Thanx Dave, I sure like your two bit axe you just had hanged , I saw that video also, take care Dave, and Merry Chrustmas, and a Healthy, Prosperous, New Year.

Hey Dave, Man what is a beautiful axe . Cody is just grade A when it comes to something like that. I know plenty of people that would like it if you don't. Man Cody is going to be surprised if you didn't tell me you were sending that to him. Awesome.

I was waiting for this video. Living in PA, I think I should get out there and see if I can find a few Norlund axes. I'm not certain, but when I first saw yours featured on Cody's channel, I thought the color and sticker looked very familiar to me. Perhaps I know what now.

Love my Norlund single bit (Hudson's Bay "tomahawk"). I feel lucky that when it got passed down through the family that it landed in my hands. I agree with you... It is a great tool. Cody is a quality man with a great channel. I sure hope the rumor is true that you might be coming out to the Northwest for a visit.

Howdy Dave. Who would you say makes the best modern production hatchet? It'll be used to hammer split oak and mesquite for BBQ.

Hey Dave , alittle off topic but you said you were deer hunting in the morning..i was hoping maybe you can do a few vids on how you hunt deer. Like where you set your stand up if you call them or attract them to the stand. I just started this year on public land in NJ very crowed and not having much luck..
