Another checkmark for team backplate and wing. I can switch out the hardware and webbing within minutes. Everything is modular (even the bladder) so the whole system doesn't break down if one part of it fails.
REI and some other outdoor stores (Bass Pro and Cabela's) carry the buckles with the stainless pins. I think the brand is Sea to Summit. I bought a ScubaPro BCD cheap once because it had a broken buckle...fixed it and resold for a profit a few weeks later. Now I carry a couple of extras in my save-a-dive box
I admire your knowledge and experience! Greetings from a colleague from Phuket (for now). My experience as an instructor is minimal compared to yours (it's only 13 years so far), but still. Come and let's dive here. ) Dive day I'll cover for you. )
Well thanks for the invitation. I'm not travelling far these days as I stay close to my ranch to care for our horses, donkey, chickens, cats, dogs, grandkids! Hey, 13 years is a long time in our business so you have some good stories. Thanks for watching. A
that buckle design is likely to fail, if not the reciever, it is the pawls on the male part. possibly that the plastic is on the brittle side but it happened rather often to me and I can guarentee you than nothing have been dropped on. For sure repairing a BCD is a way better way than replacing it.when it is repairable and the repair procedure is safe. To me, maintening my diving equipment is a part of the diving experience and I feel much more comfortable and secure to use an equipment that I made the maintenance and the fine adjustments as I always fear botched interventions. very good topic excellent video.
Truth is someone else dropped their tank on his buckle as the lockers have the BC's hung low to the floor. He knows to keep it clipped to be the strongest but the resort did gear cleaning for him. A
Is it worth saying that the easiest way to avoid this issue is to use a one-piece harness with a back plate and wing? Sorry, but someone is gonna say it. Take care Alex, and Kevin!
It's arguably superior in every single way. A jacket BCD can only carry a single tank, you can't distribute your weights freely, and there is no crotch strap. Plus, as seen here, a broken buckle or severed strap is a big deal.
A favorate dive shop scam is to tell you your plastic second stage is cracked when in some cases what they are saying is a crack is actually the line left when the part was removed from the mold. Plastic does get old and crack but sometimes its not.
Now mess with Kevin and make it 5 sizes too small and don't tell him till he tries to buckle it. Hehehehe I changed all mine on my old BCD because one broke on a BC, that I had from 1990 til 2008. It cracked right across the top . I found a pretty blue set that was spray painted, but brand new for $5. I got a bunch stuff that replaced every thing. And then sold the BCD to a guy that wanted that type, and seen it in my car while I was at a Mc Donald's.

BPs are getting more popular every year. Let's see what DEMA brings out new this year.

It could be. There are still way more jacket/wing BC's sold than backplates. But backplates are catching in more and more.

I don't think i ever had an actual cracked 2nd stage exhaust in all my years. The molded plastic is almost like steel.

Nice to know if You pull a 'Kevin' and drop a tank on Your buckle...Or something similar...
Let's call all scuba boo-boo's a Kevin. He will hate that.

Oh I mess with Kevin (and he gets me back) lots. Good way to sell a used BC.

Some buckles don't have a free belt end, then it is another story.
Options are to sew an ending or rivet one in place.

Dual Snap Bar Buckle can make the job
If someone is confused 🤔 about changing a buckle shouldn’t be a diver 😅😊
There are folks not as gifted in the art of fixing stuff. That's what LDS's are for.
