I have no cell service at my camp in Maine, recently installed Starlink works flawlessly. It draws an average of 45 watts I shut it off at night to conserve battery power. I am off grid as well. Great video!
We live out in a rural area in southern Michigan with terrible hardwire internet options. We finally took the plunge a few weeks ago and picked up a Starlink kit at a local big box store along with a wall mount. Easy setup and great speeds (200-250 Mbps downloads vs 16 Mbps hardwire) and no issues so far in the snowy weather. We love it. You might want to consider using a wall mount to install the dish up near the peak of the roof of your cabin. It will eliminate the cabin "obstruction shadow" and lower the angle of any tree obstructions.
On my channel, I upload 4 videos a week and I livestream once a week, and live out in the middle of no where, so Starlink is a life saver!! I chose their business plan, because as you say, as content creators we upload a ton of videos. I've had it for 5 years and love it. I really don't see the need to upload 4K on UA-cam. I did for a while, but as you said, those are huge files and a bit unnecessary. HD is fine. You guys will love it. Also, put it on top of your straight up stump tree by your solar house. Reception will be much better the higher up it is.
What will help a lot is getting another router that you plug into the Starlink router and put it in your home it will be faster and you can plug in more devices it. A tplink is a great one and doesn’t cost much.
We LOVE our starlink. We live in rural eastern Oklahoma and the only option was cable that worked 50% of the time. We will NEVER go back. It just works. No interruptions, no lag, and the power consumption on our off grid system is minimal. This is a home run in our books.
Living in Hawaii, the grid power can be pretty iffy, so I have switched cooking, hot water and my dryer to propane. For the rest we have an EcoFlow 3600 Pro for mitigating the power fluctuations we often get to high winds and other issues. We also have a power generator for longer term problems. We even got solar panels for the EcoFlow. Are you off-grid? I think many Americans are implementing alternatives and even keeping stocks of food and water for the family. The Hawaii Civil Defense recommends have two weeks supply of food and water on hand for each family member plus along term supply of meds and fuel. Hawaii is 2500 miles away from the nearest source of help and considering hurricanes, heavy rains, earthquakes and even lava flows, it behooves us to be prepared. Your lifestyle is more the trend now and not as unique as it once was. Blessings with much Aloha from Hawaii...
We got Starlink about 3 months ago. Initially we got Starlink Mini for our RV adventures allowing me to work from the road. I was concerned because I needed VPN access for work. VPN is very sensitive to latency. Starlink Mini worked perfect. we were so impressed with Starlink Mini, we bought the regular Starlink for our home. Works great! And what's cool is we have 2 plans, Residential and Roam and we can switch between accounts whenever we need. Pretty awesome...kind of expensive but where we live and travel, cell service is not an option and Starlink solved this issue.
Good info video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. As a person who has had dishes for decades, one thing I would do, is, make sure you put that where you can easily reach it to re-align and clean off snow. I always put mine on a 4 x 4 post in yard(buried the cable down a little so I can mow over it) not too far away from a window. Then I had a telescoping pole with a squeegee, when it would snow I would open up the window & I could clean off the dishes from inside the cabin. Creative genius or King of Laziness? Either way, works for me. Have a great day you 2.
Welcome to starlink offgrid. Until you convert to POE the 110vac version that you have is good for ~50-60watt draw... constantly. When you convert to POE/DC you can confidently 1/2 that power consumption. Nice standard of living boost at the cabin.
Gotta say, we’ve got Starlink at our cabin for a year and a half now and we absolutely love it. S.E. Ohio. It works so well that between our home in N.E. Ohio and the cabin we’re paying $500.00 a month for direct tv, we canceled them and now use UA-cam TV for $77.00 a month & $120.00 a month for Starlink. I think our upload & download speed is just about as fast as our hardwired fiber system at home. Happy y’all got it. I think back in time on my comments that I mentioned for you guys to get the Starlink system. Yeeehaaa!
Thank you! I have property near Frederic & I've been researching options so I can work from there! I appreciate you sharing you syatems and journey living there. I have learned so much! An to try a similar water system in the spring! Thanks again! Happy Holidays!
Sure your still off grid even with Star Link, those living in vans use Star Link. Congratulations folks nice upgrade .Happy this is working out for you .
I've been a Strarlink customer now for idk 6-8 months....could not be happier. Since then I've got SL for my kids homes...they are also delighted w/ it....//
My starlink track the signal from satellites overhead without the physically move it and it melts off the snow to I love it here from Ontario Canada ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦🥶🥶😎
This was a great video and for me, perfect timing. We had been using a Verizon data SIM in our rig's router with mobile hotspot as a backup. Since I work from our RV a day or two a week we wanted something better so we purchased a Standard Starlink Kit for our RV about a week ago. It's good to see how it sets up and gets used. After the new year I'll be signing up for the Roam service for 1 month to get it configured for camping season. Thank you for sharing.
Nice addition you guy's 👏. Now everyone is going to start telling you how to fine tune the setup and mounting position to get the max out of your new setup. Now you can roll back your cell phone plans and make it a great deal..
Well, a real nice decision to aquire Starlink service. Pricey but speed and unlimited data. Is well worth it. Enjoy all the data you collect and analyze. 👍👍👍
Mount it on top of your cabin you will be fine. I live in rural Maine and I have Starlink mounted on top of my house I have no issues and we lose power often and we never lose Starlink along with our on demand generator. Highly recommend for rural or off grid living.
I'm in Western Michigan and my options are also limited. The only thing that works well here is Comcast. Trouble is they know that!!! Rates keep going up and up. I'm just a few dollars shy of $125.00. I've briefly looked into Starlink but am concerned with the snow piling up. You guys are the perfect candidate to ask; is the snow an issue with your service?
Not always good if you live in a heavily forested area. We originally purchased Star Link for use on our boat while anchored out traveling around the perimeter of Florida in the winter. The system worked well and was able to support our visiting children who can work remotely but need a solid connection. We then took the system to our remote cabin in a heavily forested area where we spend summers. The Star Link system here was a fail in that it would frequently loose communications and spin. Yes we are in a heavily tree area with some 100' tall but the dish was set up in a clearing with no trees within 250 to 300 feet. We are back to using a twisted pair telephone link which greatly out performs the satilight system at this location.
We ended up not having very many options out in the country ourselves. After realigning dish, mounting on roof to overcome obstruction and proper router placement, (placing it outside or in mud/utility room will cut down on performance) I know from experience. It will work well and rivals most other provider speeds even if they were available here. It’s kinda pricy but worth it. Realignment from 3 degrees off when it was mounted to when it was corrected (without obstructions) increased upload and download speeds by about 20%
Starlink was a game changer for us. Using a hotspot was ok, but slow when it came to uploading photos for my wife's photography business. With Starlink, it has been great cutting the upload time way down. And as you mentioned, it has pretty good range. It works all the way out to my barn about 100 yds out.
Very nice.....we were surprised at the range as well. Especially considering the big companies in town or the city you can barely use it while on the back deck.
We love our Starlink too! We live in the mountains of northern PA. The only suggestion is that you should put your router inside for better reception for all your equipment. We stream all our tv and use our cell phones. Internet is awesome. Everything works great. The only outages we have had was during very very heavy rain storm and that was only for a few minutes. Good luck!
I recently purchased the GEN3 Starlink and it has been a blessing at my remote cabin. I was shocked and very happy on how well it works. I do have to deal with trees so I am curious to see how it handles those in the spring.
Your definitely off grid. Having basic technology is great at this time especially since a lot of it nowadays is geared for off grid living. Guys are doing great. Thanks for the review. Been looking for something like this.
Thanks for this video guys I was thinking about getting this and now I know I want it at my cabin to it will help me with video camera and I can keep an eye I my place when I'm not there .
Off grid here in northern Wisconsin and love my Starlink. Mainly got it so I can stream football and watch your Lions beat our Packers. At least the Bears still suck. 😎
Welcome to the 21st century ;) We went Starlink last year and never looked back. Living in the country (WV) DSL was the only other option here. Download was ok but upload was at a snails pace even with multiple DSL lines. I turned off the Starlink WiFi and connected the box directly to our existing home WiFi router with a cable. The only change needed on our devices was... nothing, they just worked since only the provider to the router changed ;) Starlink has no problem running - Ooma phone service, 2 TV's, Desktop, laptops, phones ect.. all at same time.
I have it mounted on my roof but that is to keep it out of the yard only, it did not have to be. The only thing needed is a clear view to the northern sky. The app will let you know what area is best for you before mounting. The dish is pointing to satellites in the sky, 10-20 feet higher or lower will not change signal, it only helps getting around obstructions that can't be removed when putting dish in a desired location instead of a clear location 10-20 feet left or right instead.
When we go full time in our travel trailer we will be getting Starlink for sure. It is not beneficial right now for us because we only go out a few times a year. I have heard you can pause it but I don't think you can pause it for several months but I am doing my research as well. Glad to see you guys like it
You can also take it with wherever you travel. I know folks that off grid and overland with off road vehicles - they set it up when they make camp as they film, edit and upload UA-cam content for their channels. Another guy who sails around the world has the marine version that works on live aboard boats. (That service costs $100 more per month.)
Awesome I've been hearing a lot about it... I'm using satellite now.. I'm getting around 60 Meg download speed and about 12 to 25 Meg upload at times I'm curious if you checked the download speed yet
We have spectrum internet right now,but only 300 mb per month, and it cost 125.00, so I'm thinking of switching to this if it's true unlimited. Well worth the cost,I tried ordering direct, but I don't know if it went through,so if i don't get an email from them, I will go to my local Walmart to buy the kit. Thanks for this video.
Considering my internet provider just raised our rates...again... this might be something to consider. We are paying about $90 /mo right now. We are on the lowest plan and honestly, way more internet speed than we need. At our cabin, I get pretty good cell service so I stream from my phone and it works decent.
That's awesome! I've read that they are using a frequency that deals with cloud cover pretty well but rain can make it a little muddy at times. Other than that it's mostly reliable. Think I've about decided to to install it at my solar shed after the first of the month. I've been living on DSL for years now. A string and a couple of cans would be an improvement. Got plenty of power to burn so I don't really care what it needs. Been trying to think of some useful ways to burn wasting energy.....
Starlink sounds like a huge upgrade for you, congrats. It would seem that you'd need to mount it high up, maybe on the cabin somewhere to get the best results. On a completely different topic, we just finished your maple syrup this morning and now I'm sad. Looking forward to purchasing again.
What about putting your StarLink “satellite/receiver/dish” on a pole to elevate it for better reception? That way neither you, your pups or wayward wild critters would tip the thing over or such.
I have the standard version up in Oregon in use. $120 a month. It WANTS WIDE OPEN SKY or you'll get lots of random quick outages, barely noticeable.. You should be ok.. The app will tell you the correct alignment. Ps. Take advantage of the "Snow melt" option. Turn it on only when it's going to snow or monitor it on auto.. Always on will consume alot power. For $600 you could get the 12v low power version.. and the dish will fit in a luggage or a backpack. I had one, never opened it and took it back. My cell gets a 5g signal here..
Non starlink related but I was thinking about this on the way home tonight. If jay can figure out the wind generator hook that up to a couple of the old batteries and use a small inverter to run a heat lamp in the solar shed it might keep the new batteries from using the self heating feature and it would help with the parasitic draw and it might help the batteries last a few days longer before having to fire up the generator. Anyway just thoughts I figured I’d share. I’m sure jay is already miles ahead of my thinking
You will like the wind turbine video my friend.....Great minds think alike. I'm just waiting for some decent wind to gather some info to chare in the video.....amazingly it has been a very calm three weeks since it was installed, lol
I just got the official DC to DC power brick for my Starlink, will be testing it out next Spring. Should hopefully use less power than the AC power brick does since it won't have to go through an inverter. The few times I've used my Starlink since I got it were pretty awesome.
I have Starlink at my Off-grid cabin also. I have some issues with the trees, but was able to find a spot on the roof that is mostly clear of obstructions, and I am getting close to 200mbps download, roughly 30 up. So I feel like it is so worth it, considering the closest I can get is a point to point dish type system that is not Unlimited and cost almost as much.
I purchased a starlink for 299 and chose a roam $50 dollar plan. After a month put account on pause. I will have it if we have a natural disaster hopefully can stay connected if needed. I was getting 650 down can't complain.
I am fascinated with Elon's technology. I too live out a ways and do have a hard line internet service but it costs me almost a hundred and fifty a month. I see this getting even cheaper as time goes on and who knows what comes next in technology. Cool beans kids... happy for ya to get this. Talk at ya more as we learn more together
@OffgridwithJayandJen first one we got was defective. The next one was good but we didn't have a clear enough view of the north sky. Jason has to take more trees down.
got lucky.. there is a T-Mobile tower about a mile away from us when we went out to check out our newly purchased land.. was not expecting that.. so now we can get T-Mobile home.. which is $50 a month for unlimited data.. makes it so much easier to stay in touch with the outside world.. and upload UA-cam videos!
Nice......we have cell towers that give us good signal too.....the major issue was the data package that claim to be unlimited, but they slow it down after 60 or 100 GIgs then you are left with slow almost useless service
@@OffgridwithJayandJen oooff that sucks.. unlimited should be just that.. unlimited.. a class action lawsuit would certainly wake them up.. if you pay for unlimited that is what you should get.. it's data.. it's not a all you can eat buffet..
I would have recommended getting the dish that tracks automatically. I've been using Starlink for over a year now and it's been decent, it's not crazy speeds but for your cabin this will be a game changer!!! Luckily they are running fibre to my home so I'll be switching away from Starlink next month.
So glad you found something to improve your access. Where will you place the device? Or do you plan to leave it there by the deck, stick it up on a pole, roof?
Only time will tell. Right now it is working very well as it is.....but moving it indoors and maybe in the loft or on the face of the cabin might be in the future
I have mine mounted on an 8 ft pole keeps the snow away from it and keeps it from getting bumped or knocked over or ran over lol all so gets better line of sight and keeps it low enough in case you need to get to it for any reason
Thanks! We've been thinking about doing this too. I've looked into it, and the installation should be no biggie. I'd be a little concerned about what might happen to the "dish" in high winds, but I'll be looking more closely at that aspect of it. How does your setup mount, if you were to hard mount it to your cabin? I worked in aerospace for over 30 years, and I like the idea. I'd also like to support SpaceX, they're pretty much the go-to launch provider for all satellites now, as they are super reliable and much cheaper than other launch options. Another company with satellite internet is here in our area, but they have a bad reputation. We've only been here in Tennessee for a year, so we're still learning about all the connectivity options and what's best here. Our current cable internet provider is pretty good, but we don't have their cell service. They do have outages, and it's probably more than what we would be paying for Starlink.
The package we bought just sits on the ground.....but I'm sure there is an adapter or mounting bracket that can be used if we wanted to relocate it. Will have to wait and see if sitting where it is works or if it becomes problematic over time.
Do you know since you are using Starlink as a home base, you can mount the satellite on top of your home with a pole. You don’t have have it sitting on the ground.
I’m looking into the combined DishTV and Frontier satellite internet combo package. I’ve got marginal over the air tv and almost zero internet. Phone works most of the time. I’m a TV-aholic.
Next on my list is Starlink. I have Xplore, 50mbps download, .23 upload and huge near 2000ms latency. Some games I can't even play anymore and a 2min video is 90min upload.
@OffgridwithJayandJen my Internet just died ,dec 13 for a technician.14 months non stop till today. Update the tech put in a new cable. 15hr fixed. Guy phones and asks can I come a day early?, yes please

Woot woot
Ya we found this deal manageable for sure.
Just wifi or internet......but you can definitely do tele-calling on many apps using internet from the Starlink

Thank you for sharing! We have been wondering how well it works in the woods and with crazy northern Michigan weather.
Jay and Jen love and enjoy your videos. May the lord bless and protect you and Jen installing starlight internet
I have one of the first Starlinks , you have to face it northern skies, mine adjust automatic, also install on your roof.

Highly recommend
Off grid here in northern Wisconsin and love my Starlink. Mainly got it so I can stream football and watch your Lions beat our Packers. At least the Bears still suck. 😎
Ha.....the lions were over due for some success. I'm still found of your packers though. 😁
Thanks for the video.
Welcome to the 21st century ;)
We went Starlink last year and never looked back. Living in the country (WV) DSL was the only other option here. Download was ok but upload was at a snails pace even with multiple DSL lines. I turned off the Starlink WiFi and connected the box directly to our existing home WiFi router with a cable. The only change needed on our devices was... nothing, they just worked since only the provider to the router changed ;)
Starlink has no problem running - Ooma phone service, 2 TV's, Desktop, laptops, phones ect.. all at same time.
Also know... the app on your phone can do a signal check for blockages to help you find a permeant location. You can scan the sky using phone.
Perfect.....glad to hear it. We are loving it so far too
I have it mounted on my roof but that is to keep it out of the yard only, it did not have to be.
Pretty Cool! Maybe the Great Pumpkin there was Interfering! Just Kidding guy's Love & Peace from Northern Indiana!
Damm pumpkin, lol

I used to have Mobil Starlink. Worked great on my sailboat or camping. Rv, everywhere!😊
Very nice
When we go full time in our travel trailer we will be getting Starlink for sure. It is not beneficial right now for us because we only go out a few times a year. I have heard you can pause it but I don't think you can pause it for several months but I am doing my research as well. Glad to see you guys like it
We love it so far. 2 or 3 weeks and working great
I can't wait to hear more in future🎉😅 You might consider putting the satellite on a pole like a platform up there.
you are doing just fine.. and yes u r off grid.. in so many ways.. you are on a mobile grid or a new way to live..
It is just that simple...😂 Great trial run, glad you were able to get it so soon. Love what ya'll are doing 😊
You can also take it with wherever you travel. I know folks that off grid and overland with off road vehicles - they set it up when they make camp as they film, edit and upload UA-cam content for their channels. Another guy who sails around the world has the marine version that works on live aboard boats. (That service costs $100 more per month.)
Great information my friend
Awesome I've been hearing a lot about it... I'm using satellite now.. I'm getting around 60 Meg download speed and about 12 to 25 Meg upload at times I'm curious if you checked the download speed yet
Jen was supose to get me that info for the video and I didn't get it in time for editing this video, I'll ask her the numbers and get them to you.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen good deal..I'm interested
Another good video. Thank you for sharing it.❤
Thanks so much for watching!
when spring comes and the trees get leafs it could block the signal.. something to keep in mind if you have problems later.
Cellular service is great if you get the signal and don't upload much, so keep on using it if it is cheaper and works.
We are really impressed with it, had it a few weeks now and it works well even during all these storms we have been getting
@@OffgridwithJayandJen Great to hear!
Starlink sounds like a huge upgrade for you, congrats. It would seem that you'd need to mount it high up, maybe on the cabin somewhere to get the best results. On a completely different topic, we just finished your maple syrup this morning and now I'm sad. Looking forward to purchasing again.
Cabin mounting might be a good option. Really happy to hear you enjoyed the syrup....appreciate you for all the support as well. 😁👍 woot woot
What about putting your StarLink “satellite/receiver/dish” on a pole to elevate it for better reception? That way neither you, your pups or wayward wild critters would tip the thing over or such.
We all appreciate your efforts to bring us 4K videos!
Thanks buddy, it may not be 100% necessary, but we like to try our best. Altough i aged 10 years after seeing the 4k footage , lol
Now only if Starlink could warm up the tractor before Jay needs to use it, it'd be a grand slam! Nice, guys.
Brilliant, 😁👍
I have the standard version up in Oregon in use. $120 a month. It WANTS WIDE OPEN SKY or you'll get lots of random quick outages, barely noticeable.. You should be ok.. The app will tell you the correct alignment. Ps. Take advantage of the "Snow melt" option. Turn it on only when it's going to snow or monitor it on auto.. Always on will consume alot power. For $600 you could get the 12v low power version.. and the dish will fit in a luggage or a backpack. I had one, never opened it and took it back. My cell gets a 5g signal here..
Good info! Thanks for sharing that.
Cool Jay and jen hope it all work out for u guys
Most definitely you’ll love it.
I just got the official DC to DC power brick for my Starlink, will be testing it out next Spring. Should hopefully use less power than the AC power brick does since it won't have to go through an inverter. The few times I've used my Starlink since I got it were pretty awesome.
Very cool.....I didn't know they had that device....I'll look into it. Thanks
I hear a lot put theirs on top of their cabins or homes.
Awesome.....good stuff.
I purchased a starlink for 299 and chose a roam $50 dollar plan. After a month put account on pause. I will have it if we have a natural disaster hopefully can stay connected if needed. I was getting 650 down can't complain.
Nice
I am fascinated with Elon's technology. I too live out a ways and do have a hard line internet service but it costs me almost a hundred and fifty a month. I see this getting even cheaper as time goes on and who knows what comes next in technology. Cool beans kids... happy for ya to get this. Talk at ya more as we learn more together
Great to have many options and new technologies for sure. Best wishes my friend
Maybe once we cut more trees down for our solar we can try Starlink again. I'm bummed we had to send ours back. Good job you two. 😊❤
Did it break or just not work in the woods?
I hope starlink works for you! It looks like a great system!
Thanks buddy
I would have recommended getting the dish that tracks automatically. I've been using Starlink for over a year now and it's been decent, it's not crazy speeds but for your cabin this will be a game changer!!! Luckily they are running fibre to my home so I'll be switching away from Starlink next month.
Nice....what is the cost difference to switch to fiber?
@@OffgridwithJayandJen $50 Cdn cheaper with fibre.....so $10 Usd lol
Did you try AT&T Heard they were very good but maybe you have already ❤the videos good luck with your star link
At&t works ok....the big problem was the limited data packages they offered.
So glad you found something to improve your access. Where will you place the device? Or do you plan to leave it there by the deck, stick it up on a pole, roof?
Only time will tell. Right now it is working very well as it is.....but moving it indoors and maybe in the loft or on the face of the cabin might be in the future
I use Starlink to make internet calls with my cellphone and homephone.
I would invest in the pole mount option for the dish.
Nice, you just added another ping station for musks new drone force.
Love my Starlink very professionally setup. The only complaint is no live customer service.
Oh......that is a bummer. Customer service is important
No worry about the weather ( getting wet) they are used on a lot of yachts 👍
Good to know!
Have you considered putting on a pole mount attached to a wall or roof so won't get buried by snow as much ?
Might work
I have mine mounted on an 8 ft pole keeps the snow away from it and keeps it from getting bumped or knocked over or ran over lol all so gets better line of sight and keeps it low enough in case you need to get to it for any reason
I checked, and I did see that there are optional mounts. I'm certainly going to talk to the Finance Minister about it.
Do you know since you are using Starlink as a home base, you can mount the satellite on top of your home with a pole. You don’t have have it sitting on the ground.
Awesome. I liked it
Thanks!
Can you hook directly to the cabin...like on the eve and point up??
I think there may be kits for that, but not sure if ours is compatible
I’m looking into the combined DishTV and Frontier satellite internet combo package. I’ve got marginal over the air tv and almost zero internet. Phone works most of the time. I’m a TV-aholic.
Love you guys 😂
Next on my list is Starlink. I have Xplore, 50mbps download, .23 upload and huge near 2000ms latency. Some games I can't even play anymore and a 2min video is 90min upload.
It works great for what we need, i can't speak for gaming, as we don't play, but it really works well for upload and download in this way.
@OffgridwithJayandJen my Internet just died ,dec 13 for a technician.14 months non stop till today. Update the tech put in a new cable. 15hr fixed. Guy phones and asks can I come a day early?, yes please
Glad it works 😊😊
