I feel like some people get too married to the idea of DV instead of assessing whether it's necessary. In this case, it looks incredible without DV so demanding some minor uptick just to be able to say it's there is just mindset standing in the way of enjoyment. It looks incredible.
Also, the packaging for the 4k slipcover actually looks quite nice in person, despite me thinking it was a boring design when it was first revealed however many weeks ago
As usual Adam's commentary about the film are accurate. Love hearing his love for movies❤❤
Thanks for the review. I expected no less than an A+ and incredible transfer. I agree, after checking mine out that the visuals look incredible compared the the Disney + stream.
I'll tell you what's missing on the disc! the Name, the logo!!! your right!!!
Great review Adam. Thanks. And you're right the film is gorgeous.
Started watching the stream on Disney and I felt like this was not the movie I remembered.. that drove me to pick up the 4K disc and folks it’s night and day. They haven’t released Avatar 1 in 4K in Canada yet so I’m waiting on that. The slipcover packaging I’d give it a C. They stacked the 4K disc on top of the bonus feature disc.
I got avatar 1 4k from Amazon here in Canada, and it is the only place I found it
@@luispalma4356 I saw them both at Sunrise and Bestbuy here in CLG.
It pays to have some 3 and maybe 4 disc 4k and Blu-ray cases at home. They come in handy with these kind of stacked discs or ones in cardboard sleeves. As soon as Way of Water was delivered, I checked the discs for any surface scratches and then put them in a 3 disc case.
Like the slip here more than the steelbook, especially the first movie's 4K slip. So good. 👌🏻
Loving the addition of a packaging rating!
I am excited to see what both avatars look like in 4k, this weekend, when I can hopefully sit down and watch them, I have them, I just haven’t had the time to sit down and watch them, which I hope that I have that kind of time this weekend, to watch both in 4k, with atmos…
Nice review Adam, I loved it too.
Wonder if I should just switch to steelbooks since it seems to be the best way to hold discs and not stack them
I'm gonna watch this tonight on 4k Ultra HD and looking forward to seeing and hearing the Dolby Atmos sound on my floor speakers 🔊 👌
I bought the Walmart 4k exclusive with the lenticular cover. Haven't watched the film yet but hope to soon.
Got avatar 1&2 yesterday watched the first one last night about to watch the new one now
Like I did with Avatar 1, I did an A-B comparison between the disc HDR10 (Panny UB-9000 to a Sony QD-OLED TV) version and the iTunes Dolby Vision version of Way of Water from an Apple TV 4K streamer into the Sony TV. The movie's non-CG elements were shot in 2K then up-scaled to 4k while all of the CG elements were shot in native 4K. The HDR image is very, very good, sharp with solid colors and depth but the steamed Dolby Vision version is more dynamic. It just has more "pop" and depth than the HDR10 version. I got the HDR10 image pretty close to the Dolby Vision by using the Sony's Advanced Contrast Enhancer set to at least medium. That probably threw the TV's calibrated values off a bit but, visually, that wasn't noticeable. Unfortunately, Disney continues to refuse to issue its home releases in Dolby vision and if any movies deserved it the two Avatars certainly did. I know that there are yearly fees for the use of Dolby Vision and that TVs that support it have royalties attached but I can't find anything about royalties for home release discs. Even if there are, I'm sure that the Magic Kingdom can afford it or it can pass them on to consumers like everyone else does when their costs go up.
Sorry but you are wrong. The 4K disc version of Way of Water blows both the iTunes and Disney + steams out of the water. On average Dolby Vision only offers 5 to 10% tops improvement in picture quality of regular HDR but the streaming version are already working from a disadvantage because of their horrible bit rate.
.
Actually I don't care about forensic numbers. I know what my eyes are telling me in a direct A-B comparison of the same scenes. I'll hold to my opinion and you are certainly entitled to yours. My bottom line is that, once again, Disney's unwillingness to pay for a Dolby Vision license on two movies that deserved it was a missed opportunity.
@@MrNorcal81 You must have a really crappy TV then. Because on any high end TV the disc blows the streams out of the water. It's not even close.
@@ScruffyWarlord Yup , a professionally calibrated Sony 65" A95K QD-OLED, the consensus pick for worst TV of 2022. 😄. You have your opinion and I have mine and let's leave it at that, okay?
@@MrNorcal81 Very happy to hear you have a top of the line TV. It's been confirmed that you must have eye sight issues then. LOL - just busting your chops man. Like you said , we can agree to disagree.
I bought the Walmart exclusive lenticular 4K.
Great review! Will you be reviewing 'The Firm'?
Awesome! Gonna have to check this movie out (I missed it in the theater). Adam, will you be doing a review of the Vanilla Sky 4K Disc?
Yea I’ll be posting a short review of it soon.
thxs cant wait to watch might not be till winter because of work
The dolby vision isn't exclusive to Disney+, but all digital formats. Vudu and movies anywhere have Dolby vision too.
I know, just knocking Disney a bit for their DV policies.
Thank you Adam.
I got the 4K. Incredible video and audio presentations. The movie is not something I liked. Marginally better than the first one. But damn, it is way too long.
will there be a review of the 3D version ?
He said he isn’t doing a 3D review. Not sure why.
@@shinedown54because 3D tvs are currently obsolete since manufacturers aren’t making them anymore.
Great video!
Thanks Adam! Always appreciate and value your reviews. 😊
What to do, get the 4k.....Get the 3D.......or get both🤔
Both. 😉
No Dolby Vision on 4K Blu rays no Extended Cut of AVATAR 2009 no Extended Cut with Atmos in 2D 1080p and 3D and why couldn't Disney include Dolby Atmos on 1080p discs😂
Is there a option to turn off HDR on the 4K disc ?
I think you can on certain 4K players in the settings.
@@MovieGuy365 thanks for the quick reply! I’m using my PS5 as a player, do you know if I can turn it off there ?
I’m not near my PS5 so I can’t check but if it’s possible it would be in the settings display option.
Why get this in 4K bro. There's a 3D version available.
Because almost nobody has 3D equipment. 🤷🏾♂️
@@GaryWalters buy a projector. Most of them have 3D support and basically all 4k Blu ray players have 3D support aswell.
@@twantheunisz9281 Yeah - because everyone has the space for a projector screen!
At Ahh Boyyyyyy!!! 😅
Disney lazy not having Dolby Vision yet charges more, come on.
Disney hasn’t even purchased or renewed their license to be able to offer Dolby Vision on home media. A lot of people don’t know about that.
What are you talking about the HDR is horrible
Story: Stole from Fast/Furious instead of Wolves
Family.
Disney knows what they are doing. Enthusiasts will always pay for physical media and for everyone else streaming works
Agreed. I feel like some people get too married to the idea of DV instead of assessing whether it's necessary. In this case, it looks incredible without DV so demanding some minor uptick just to be able to say it's there is just mental inertia at that point
Not Disney, per se; it’s James Cameron.
Just wished James Cameron would insist for a physical release in Southeast Asia. Disney has stopped making physical media in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea in favor of Disney+.
@@tinlunlau1 Damn.
@@Geblawi Home video market in Hong Kong has been getting alot of shakeup lately. IVL exits home video market while still doing theatrical distribution. And now, Universal and Sony Pictures have switched to Manta Lab. I didn't even mention this was not too long after Deltamac left the Hong Kong market. Manta Lab is well known for making these super expensive deluxe BluRay/4K releases. Look em up! They're really good with this stuff.
Didnt see it in theatres. May have to buy it to experience an awesome Dolby Atmos mix. Sadly most 4k atmos soundtracks are pretty underwhelming
I'm glad that Disney has not kowtowed to the dolby vision cult lol. The last thing we need is proprietary non-standards like that becoming ubiquitous without competition! Good review, the 3D version is incredible for this release.
Well, Dolby Vision is always backwards-compatible with HDR-10, which we are getting here. So I don't see how we win anything. This is not Disney being anti-propreitary, this is Disney keeping physical down and pushing their streaming where the movie has Dolby Vision.
@@bened22 Even Disney + so called Dolby Vision is actually a muted watered down version of Dolby Vision. This has already been confirmed.
The story got an improvement? :/ It was thinner than the first one, lol.
Story wise, I lost interest pretty quick. The antagonists are straight up mercenaries under the guise of a government military. This is pretty much like russia just invading Ukraine but with blue people. Kinda silly that Cameron would just do this again in the movie.
Terrible movie. Zero interest.
When Shane Lee (SpareChange) reviewed this disc he didn't rate the Atmos mix highly at all ("good" 8.1 out of 10).
ua-cam.com/video/1bX_R7Wsdgs/v-deo.html
He has is own criteria for ratings, every reviewer does.
Can't find any steelbooks for it in Canada :(
