The aliens had implanted their consciences into humans, and are trying to settle on earth. And for the fifth wave to work they need to indoctrinate a lot of people, and the easiest type of people to indoctrinate are children.
That tech could be as inaccessible as nukes to chimps, or as accessible as nukes to tribal people. In the second case, if they didn’t wipe us out first, we would eventually learn, just like many tribal peoples have learned nuclear technology by now.
Boil and filter then add a pinch of salt - better than nothing. Same goes for rain water by the way. Everyone thinks you can just collect rain water and drink it down as is.
One EMP blast won't take out things permanently, batteries are not affected unless they were connected and used to power something at the time as their energy is stored a chemical when not in use. Same for generators or cars that are not running at the time, even the ones that are would only need change of spark plugs and battery to get going again. Planes won't immediately stall and fall out of the sky, they'll keep gliding for minutes more and even with no electronics or power the plane still has some back up controls that allows it to be steered via hydraulics for the pilots to find best place to crash land.

If you have Transistor Ignition under your distributor, then an EMP has already destroyed your engine. Only a very very very ancient ignition system using points will be immune to EMP.
Many aircraft today are fly by wire and have a joy stick to operate flight control surfaces. The emf would fry the computers and navigation systems. Would the aircraft crash right away, probably not but soon after.
If there is a hydraulic backup, it could glide... sorta. Airliners don't glide as well as smaller craft. If no hydraulics, would the front and rear flaps freeze in the right position so the wings maintain an incline? If not, the wings will rotate the plane so they're at minimum resistance. That means an arc downward.
It actually wasn't that bad a movie. Problem was, kids wanted to see The Hunger Games rehashed over and over and so films like this based on popular YA books like this never really stod a chance. It was the same with Mortal Engines a few years later, though that was watered down to be sometimes unrecognisable, and Golden Compass-they were too different.

A plane wouldn't just suddenly fall as a result of EMP, but who cares? It looks better on the screen when it does.
Many aircraft today are fly by wire and have a joy stick to operate flight control surfaces. The emf would fry the computers and navigation systems. Would the aircraft crash right away, probably not but soon after.
If there is a hydraulic backup, it could glide... sorta. Airliners don't glide as well as smaller craft.
If no hydraulics, would the front and rear flaps freeze in the right position so the wings maintain an incline? If not, the wings will rotate the plane so they're at minimum resistance. That means an arc downward.
It actually wasn't that bad a movie. Problem was, kids wanted to see The Hunger Games rehashed over and over and so films like this based on popular YA books like this never really stod a chance. It was the same with Mortal Engines a few years later, though that was watered down to be sometimes unrecognisable, and Golden Compass-they were too different.
