Theres been a lot of new team members to GameXplain, all that are great. But Joey has become my favorite content creator for the group. So happy he has this platform now
The tone shift away from "armored mercenary lady with lazer arm fights literal space pirate dinosaurs" into something more serious and dramatic is strange to say the least.
Excellent coverage of the series. It's wild how long it's been since IV (Fusion). But V (Dread) is not far away any more. Hopefully Nintendo brings the GB, & GBA games, + DS titles to Switch soon
I wish. But that’ll never happen. My dream would be for them to *remake* the 1st and 3rd Metroid games (Zero Mission + Super Metroid), and maybe the 4th (Fusion) and then bundle *all five* together (or at least 1 ~ 4) into a single collection. I’m torn on whether I’d want Metroid Fusion to be remade, because I like that one just “as is”. But with all the others remade (or reimagined), I guess leaving Fusion “old-school” within a collection of remakes would probably be a bit weird. So either way, I don’t care. As long as I could have all 5 Metroid games on my Switch. I’m playing Super Metroid right now (on Switch Online) and I don’t mind the old school graphics. But it’s a little annoying how FLOATY Samus’ jumps are. For that reason alone I’d want Super Metroid remade. Metroid Fusion isn’t floaty at all, so I wouldn’t mind a direct port to the Switch. But it probably should be remade just for continuity sake.
The reputation around Metroid Dread really is a strange one. It is the top game on Amazon right now, and even people who have never played Metroid are excited for this game. It is as if many nintendo fans are only now realizing that there has been this dark and brooding series of games under Nintendo's belt, and Metroid Dread is doing the best to show that off. And of course, that massive silence we had since Metroid Other M that left everyone blue balled.
I already played Samus returns but I will still buy all four if they get ported to the switch. And yes I will even buy other M because I don't want Nintendo to stop making Metroid games because another one didn't sell well
Same here. I was holding off until E3 wrapped up because I was pretty confident they'd release it on the switch but I guess it's time to boot up the triligy on the wii again
The Mandolorian is basically Metroid. Space Bounty Hunter goes to planet to complete bounty, finds a powerful Baby, has to take it to a specific person/group etc
I am still so happy that Metroid is getting some love! Back in my day (listen to me) Mario, Link, and Samus were the holy Trinity when it came to Nintendo characters, but due to poor sales, Samus has sadly been left behind. Hopefully, this new game will at least pull her from out of obscurity, since most people today only know her from Smash Bros.
@@masterwings50 pokemon which has great games but never existed until the gamboy was released which the gameboy came out awhile after the NES was already established with the main characters of Mario, Link and Samus.
Unfortunately, the Metroid series is not very popular in Japan. This is why Nintendo doesn’t put as much effort into it like its other franchises. Super Metroid was a wild success in the west, but it flopped in Japan. This combined with them being unable to make a Metroid game for the N64 made them ask Retro Studios, an American company to develop a new Metroid game.
The 2D Metroids are all masterpieces of 2D action-exploration games, even the somewhat more linear and less contiguous Fusion. They're all worth playing. Super Metroid in particular is still a classic that holds up till today.
I’m replaying Super Metroid right now. It’s a great game, but I forgot how FLOATY Samus’ jumps were. It’s kind of annoying after just having replayed Fusion.

This is the first time I’ve ever learned anything about Metroid’s lore and I’m here for it really. I can’t wait to play Dread. But could someone explain why Samus’ suits kept changing?
Only in the English version, in the Japanese version she is very distrusting of Adam (and even hates being called princess, telling him to shove it up his ass when he calls her that, but in English the make her say it was a compliment), and is mentally weak due to a discovery that the Metroids eat mental and emotional energy which meant she absorbed the emotions of everything the Super Metroid ate during the fight against Mother Brain. This is also why the MB AI went haywire, because it spent so much time with the metroids which were radiating emotional energy which made it think it was human and had real emotions. She was then manipulated by Phantoon to cause all the events of Other M. Phantoon being the psychic remnants of the first Mother Brain (as revealed in the Japanese version of Super Metroid, but oddly left out of the English, because the series has a long history of translation mistakes apparently).
@@TealTrump11 most of the mistranslations in the older games were in the manuals. And the few mistranslations in Fusion didn't hurt its plot alone. But it's the tiny mistranslations all culminated in Other M being the mess it was, since it references them in detail, as well as having it's own mistranslation problems. So perhaps they just need to have a Hyrule Historia style book to clarify all this. Of course some of these mistranslations ended up being popular. Like Varia Suit is a mistranslation, but has become iconic on it's own (but dont expect a japanese made Metroid to put importance on the name like the Prime games did).

right? I assumed the name Biologic Space Lab just referred to it being a lab studying biological stuff....because it's part of the Galactic Federation....which I'm pretty sure they outright explain in Fusion...
Nice recap, I hope you are doing something similar with Metroid Prime series(I am a big fan of Metroid but I like to hear more of these). BTW, Nice thumbnail
One thing to mention was that the Chozo originally created the Metroids to combat the X Parasite. The X Parasite was spreading like the “Flood” from Halo and they had to do something about it. The Metroids we’re keeping the X Parasite in check all this time until Samus was sent to destroy all of them. Her destroying them all caused the X Parasite to resurge and start multiplying again.
What might be confusing is, that Super Metroid is considered Metroid 3 and Fusion is considered 4, even though Other M is technically 4 and Fusion should be 5. But whatever. The reason for this probably is, because Fusion came out before Other M and it was already called 4. Other M came out later, but took place before Fusion, so they could not just rename Fusion to 5, so Other M is pretty much considered to be Metroid 3,5. lol
The prime games are basically just side stories between metriod one and two, they don’t directly contradict anything so it’s fine. Other M however does contradict most of the games so it’s better off to just ignore it.
@@jordanmarcial3670 honestly no not really, it’s not extremely important to the overall timeline and doesn’t really have any major events in it. I think the only thing you’d really need to know is Adam Malkovich who appears in Metroid Fusion and even Metroid Dread (as we saw from the treehouse), I could be forgetting something but that’s what I think you should mainly know from Other M (basically it’s not an incredibly important game to the timeline but still has a few key details in there) this video does do a great job at recapping the main events in Metroid though.
There are connections between Metroid Prime and the rest of the Metroid series. "Project Dread" is namedropped, and the Nightmare-X you fight in fusion comes from the actual Nightmare you encounter in Prime as well. That's in addition to the connections between the Chozo and the Metroids (and their purpose as the predators of the X parasite). Lastly, you didn't bring up anything from the ending of Samus Returns, which suggests an evil faction of Chozo that may play a role in Metroids Dread.
Didn’t you know that the first Metroid and Super Metroid was developed by Intelligent Systems (The developer of the Fire Emblem series and Warioware series)
the reason ridley is covered in robot parts in samus returns is because hes still recovering from being meta ridley in the prime series. so yeah, the prime games are referenced in the main series now.
Zero Mission - Metroid 1 Samus Returns - Metroid 2 Super Metroid - Metroid 3 Fusion - Metroid 4 Dread - Metroid 5 Other M is NOT canon. Change my mind.
As much as we all hate it, you have to admit without other m there would be tons of plot holes in the main series such as how a ridley clone is aboard the bsl station or who adam is in fusion (and soon in dread)
text: "until the baby metroid swoops in" picture: A full ass grown metroid the size of motherbrain AND its protective glass. ...was that thing officially named "baby" or something? Did it come with a birth certificate? Or why do we still refer to an adult, which might be officially considered a war hero in the war against space pirates, as "baby metroid"? Is that metroid like "billy the kid", nicknamed forever? ( °-°)
Gets saved by the baby. Gets saved by the baby again. Gets saved by Adam. Gets saved by her clone. It's like Ash in the Indigo league getting his badges. I love Samus and I love the Metroid series, and those moments of impending doom are great the first time you play, but I look back on it now and think gosh, if it weren't for that baby she'd have been long gone ages ago.

I really hope we get a collection of the old games someday. At the very least, we need a way to play Metroid Fusion without having to dig out a GBA or find a 3DS that has the Ambassador games.
At least for now it's available on the Wii U eShop as well as Zero Mission, but, y'know.....the Wii U.........
@@justinmease997 I completely forgot about Wii U's virtual console games, wish the Switch had them. Anyway, thanks!
Dude, having the baby Metroid literally follow Samus around at the end of Samus Returns was such cool fanservice.
I bought that game for $30 about a month before Drea was announced and am so glad I did now. Prices are high and it was a great game. One of my favorites on the 3DS. And the baby was cool.
@@aureumursa1833 Wow, you’re so lucky you got it when you did. Prices of *all* Metroid games have gone crazy high. Samus Returns is selling for around $55 now. But I just found some Metroid Fusion GBA games-preowned-sold for $75 and $90, just for the cartridge alone, no box. Metroid Fusion games with original box and manual have sold for $350!!
Luckily I bought all four when they first came out, and never sold or traded them in. But I’m kicking myself so hard right now for not pre-ordering the *Special Edition* of Metroid Dread when I had the chance.
I saw it on Amazon before it sold out, but I couldn’t decide whether to get the regular version or spend $20 more for the Special Edition. So I put both in my shopping cart and left them there to think about it. Stupid move on my part. The Special Edition literally sold out within minutes, and by the time I went back to get it, it was too late. 🤦🏻♀️
@@Vmurph What else is included in the special edition? I'll pick up Dread later on. My 3DS backlog is huge. I've literally picked up 17 3DS games between June of last year and now. There are still a handful I have my eye on too.

As a person who pre-ordered the special edition of Dread because the E3 Trailer looked cool and knew nothing else about Metroid, this was helpful.
I for once found a guide where it's not hard to keep track of all the names and stuff.
So excited for dread and to become a fan of Metroid.
Go for the games then. They're considered as masterpieces for their respective generations especially Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 1. Both remain one of the best games ever created in the gaming history.

This is the order:
1. Metroid (NES)/Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
*Metroid Prime trilogy (GC/Wii)
2. Metroid 2/Metroid Samus Returns (3DS)

Thank you so much for this video, I couldn't for the life of me remember why The Federation hated Samus; and this totally reminded me of what all went down. Metroid Dread is going to be one HELL of a game I tell you. I for one can not wait, so glad it's releasing this year.
I dont need a refresher. But ill gladly listen to it again 👌
Theres been a lot of new team members to GameXplain, all that are great. But Joey has become my favorite content creator for the group.
So happy he has this platform now
I like to think Samus docks with the Comet Observatory to decompress with the only other space blonde that's taller than she is...
Thank you for doing this guys. I can finally point to a video instant of explaining it to others time and time again!
oh I was actually needing this video, thanks!
Played all the Metriod games yet couldn't help but watch this video. Thanks for the narrative refresher ♡
Ohhhh so that's why the Galactic Federation is after Samus in Metroid Dread. She blew up the BSL station and said there would be tribunals and trials.
10:40 Should've ended with "Find out in the next episode of Metroid Dread Z!"
It is hard to believe I played Metroid Fusion so long ago but I still remember it so well. It is still my favorite Metroid game.
They should release other m, fusion, zero mission and Samus return on the switch
Omg I wish
No, Other M no
NOOOO... NOT Other M... NOT THAT GAME. "THE BABY" STILL COMES IN MY NIGHTMARES.
I already played Samus returns but I will still buy all four if they get ported to the switch. And yes I will even buy other M because I don't want Nintendo to stop making Metroid games because another one didn't sell well
I’m really thankful you’ve made this video because it’s very helpful for me and others.
I’m tempted to replay the prime games.
What about pokemon?
@@masterwings50 pokemon which has great games but never existed until the gamboy was released which the gameboy came out awhile after the NES was already established with the main characters of Mario, Link and Samus.

Unfortunately, the Metroid series is not very popular in Japan. This is why Nintendo doesn’t put as much effort into it like its other franchises. Super Metroid was a wild success in the west, but it flopped in Japan. This combined with them being unable to make a Metroid game for the N64 made them ask Retro Studios, an American company to develop a new Metroid game.
Great video. Good job 👍
The 2D Metroids are all masterpieces of 2D action-exploration games, even the somewhat more linear and less contiguous Fusion. They're all worth playing. Super Metroid in particular is still a classic that holds up till today.

This is the first time I’ve ever learned anything about Metroid’s lore and I’m here for it really. I can’t wait to play Dread. But could someone explain why Samus’ suits kept changing?
Other M made Samus mentally weak to an emeny she had defeated 3 times prior, and overly reliant on Adam...
@@GBDupree that’s interesting
@@GBDupree interesting indeed. We need a super metroid deluxe with proper translations.
@@GBDupreeWOW. As a huge metroid fan even I never knew how much of a difference the Japanese version is from the English one. From what you say, other m in japan doesnt actually even seem that bad. My first Metroid game was Fusion which spoils everything in 2 and Super, and yet I found both Samus Returns and Super Metroid very enjoyable.
Heck, fighting Metroids at every point in their life cycle in Metroid II/Samus Returns is so much more exciting compared to just reading about it and looking at concept art.

It's actually hard to tell now if Other M is, was, or ever even considered part of the "cannon" for Metroid.
Gods willing it fades from memory and is never mentioned again.
I don’t know where you got the info about this ‘biologic’ company that owns the BSL as Metroid fusion explicitly says it’s owned by the federation

Hey the director of the Metroid series created it as well as the rest, so take that as you well.
Great video and explanation, especially in 11 minutes!
Ok but why didint you mentioned the animals in super metroid and fusion ? XD
Question, I’m new to Metroid. I thought every game besides zero mission, return, super, and fusion doesn’t count in the main (2D) timeline?
What might be confusing is, that Super Metroid is considered Metroid 3 and Fusion is considered 4, even though Other M is technically 4 and Fusion should be 5. But whatever. The reason for this probably is, because Fusion came out before Other M and it was already called 4. Other M came out later, but took place before Fusion, so they could not just rename Fusion to 5, so Other M is pretty much considered to be Metroid 3,5. lol
@@The_RedVIII so do I need to understand the plot of other M in order to get the whole picture?
@@jordanmarcial3670 yes
I'm only hear to say the thumbnail is genius
There are connections between Metroid Prime and the rest of the Metroid series. "Project Dread" is namedropped, and the Nightmare-X you fight in fusion comes from the actual Nightmare you encounter in Prime as well. That's in addition to the connections between the Chozo and the Metroids (and their purpose as the predators of the X parasite). Lastly, you didn't bring up anything from the ending of Samus Returns, which suggests an evil faction of Chozo that may play a role in Metroids Dread.
Man I miss Other M. Such a fun game
Didn’t you know that the first Metroid and Super Metroid was developed by Intelligent Systems (The developer of the Fire Emblem series and Warioware series)
Samus destroyed more planets than the Death Star.
If you're new to the series, avoid Metroid: Other M. It is the MOM of the series, no joke.
I wouldn't say it's bad enough to avoid, but it isn't a great look for Samus to be a damsel yk
the reason ridley is covered in robot parts in samus returns is because hes still recovering from being meta ridley in the prime series. so yeah, the prime games are referenced in the main series now.
I think I would watch all of the cutscenes in The Other M episode again.
Metroid Blast IS amazing, and I'm so glad you think so too
Zero Mission - Metroid 1
Samus Returns - Metroid 2
Super Metroid - Metroid 3
Fusion - Metroid 4
Dread - Metroid 5
Other M is NOT canon. Change my mind.
If only I could like this more than once.
Other M ruins everything, especially Fusion.
It's canon get over it
Other m metroid 3.5
It's canon, you're just delusional buddy
As much as we all hate it, you have to admit without other m there would be tons of plot holes in the main series such as how a ridley clone is aboard the bsl station or who adam is in fusion (and soon in dread)
text: "until the baby metroid swoops in"
picture: A full ass grown metroid the size of motherbrain AND its protective glass.
...was that thing officially named "baby" or something? Did it come with a birth certificate? Or why do we still refer to an adult, which might be officially considered a war hero in the war against space pirates, as "baby metroid"? Is that metroid like "billy the kid", nicknamed forever? ( °-°)
7:44 to skip Other M. Thank me later.
