    Do you think the reason that they don’t work well is the fact that there isn’t enough area to effectively slow you down, or is the cloth thin enough that at the speed of the fall, it doesn’t trap the air and slow your descent, but it flows through the cloth which makes it less effective? Is it a combination of the two? Would it work better from a higher distance?Edit: I do realize he did a full length video about this, but he didn’t address the density of the fabric, and whether air would flow through it

    • @asmaar566
      @asmaar566 3 роки тому +62

      Umbrellas are waterproof therefore are "pretty good" at stopping air but are obviously less effective than a parachute.
      As to the area of stopping, how parachutes work is by simply using the inertia of air it touches to slow it down - in simple terms it tries to accelerate all the mass of air under the cloth instead of the person's mass alone.
      Umbrellas dont cover a large enough area to provide enough mass of air to save your life because air is too light. Having one would be handy, dual wielding would make the two together about 75% effective because one will have to be angled slightly.
      Also umbrellas tend to break if they experience high forces anyway as seen by them being utterly killed by wind
      Basically open your umbrella close to the ground to maximise its effect before it breaks (air is denser near ground), but assuming its an immortal umbrella it would slow you down by approx 5-20% the value a proper parachute would provide meaning you still need to land in a hay stack or a forest to break the fall

    I think the reason you fall FASTER when holding umbrellas is that you hold umbrellas parallel to your body in order to use them properly, which means you have to angle your feet towards Earth in order for the umbrellas to supposedly slow you down. This means that your profile relative to the air is much smaller than if you spread-eagled and fell face down with all your limbs out. So you’d be like a rod falling to terra firma impacting a small area at your terminal velocity and weight, which translates to big crash (maybe even explosion) and certain death. By putting your feet down below you as you fell, you would have far less wind resistance the umbrellas cannot compensate for.
    You COULD put the umbrellas pointed down, hook the handles under your arm pits, and have a VERY unwieldy and unreliable “wing suit”, but an ACTUAL wing suit would be superior. Plus, wing suits don’t make you fall slower, they help you control the direction where you fall, you will still need a parachute to make safe ground contact.
    And if you strapped the umbrellas at 90 degree angles to your arms via some kind of aluminum frame (aluminum to keep it light) so that you CAN fall face-down and spread-eagled, you’re still not getting much benefit from the umbrellas because your body is already blocking most of the air going into the umbrella. So the amount the umbrellas would slow you down further is FAR less than you would expect. You would have to put the umbrellas in strategic spots to maximize the surface area, AND IT WOULD ONLY WORK IF YOU ARE FACE-DOWN FALLING FLAT. The moment you change ANYTHING about your position, the umbrellas would be out of alignment to a SEVERE DEGREE, and a system that adjusts the umbrella angle on the fly to allow some freedom to move around while falling would be limited by the limitations of the umbrella.
    In short, using umbrellas doesn’t solve problems, and they create new ones. Just use a wing suit, and a parachute, like most normal people.

    I used to do that as a kid, too. I'd
    Jump off side of my back patio hat was about 7 or 8 feet from the ground with an umbrella. It didnt work so well and I ended up getting in trouble for busting one of the thin metal bars that pop the umbrella open and support it.
    So I decided grocery bags were a betutter Idea, anyway. The umbrella obviously didnt work for me. But the grocery bags did a little bit. (Or so my child brain led me to believe! Lol.) Occasionally I would use a garbage bag, but the grocery bags were better, because they had arm holes in them! 😄😆
    I mean, sure the bag tended to not get as much air in it, and sometimes it wouldn't get any it seemed. But I believed it worked enough that
    I did it for a year or 2, and even got my old sister to join in. I think my older brother did as well once or twice, and he was 6-7 years older than me, and I was about 6 or 7.
    Edit: Haha. I'm so glad to see that there were a lot of other kids who did this same thing, in some form or another. Makes me feel a bit normal.

I remember when I was about 7 years old, I was watching Looney toons, on one of the episodes a character used a sheet as a parachute and I thought it was soo cool lol. So I go grab a sheet from a drawer, and go outside to climb our shed. It was about 10 ft high. I immediately jumped, and tried to use the sheet as a parachute, but it did absolutely nothing lol. I still feel that landing to this day! I always was and still am very resilient. So I didn't break any bones thankfully, but the shock and the pain I felt in my legs was something else lol. I remember just sitting there in my back yard, in pain. I didn't cry, but I just sat there kneeling in the grass for like 5 minutes. Didn't say a thing. I think I was just sitting there trying to process wtf just happened and what went wrong as pain pulsates through my feet and legs 😂

    They'd turn inside out instantly. You'd have to make super sturdy poles and those which wouldn't. And make the umbrellas thicker and just keep adding. Stack them in a kind of pyramid shape. Like add 1 more over top & in the middle where the bottom 2 meet. Then make the next pyramid with 3 on bottom and 2 on top, I'd say go ahead and add that last on top in the middle like you did the last one. I think though at some point you'll just have to start combing thicknesses and increase as much that way as outwardly obvious. It might be as bug as an hot air balloon or blimp or something fit eventually you'll be able to not kill yourself if you want to use them as your parachute.
