Happy Anniversary Ken! 🎉 as it so happens, today is the 25th wedding anniversary for my wife and me! Hope your day was filled with Neu!, National Health, Nektar, and Niacin!
My favorite bands that start with N and O are 1. Nektar - A Tab in the Ocean 2. New Trolls - Concerto Grosso - The Seven Seasons - RPI 3. Naxatras - IV - heavy psych Hms: National Health - Of Queues and Cures - Canterbury , Needlepoint - Walking Up That Valley - Crossover Prog, Bill Nelson - Luminous - Crossover Prog (Be Bop Deluxe) , Neu! - Neu! - Krautrock, Niacin - Organik - Jazz/Rock Fusion , The Nice - Ars Long Vita Brevis - Symphonic Prog, The Night Watch (now The Watch) - Twilight - Neo-Prog, Clive Nolan - King’s Ransom - Neo-Prog, Notabene - Sei Lacrime d’Ambra - RPI ITPS fav prog/prog fusion bands that start with O: 1. Ozric Tentacles - Jurassic Shift - Psych/Space Rock Hms: Opeth - In Cauda Venenum , Martin Orford - The Old Road, Osanna - Palepoli
I couldn't leave out Ohm/Ohmfrey under fusion (Chris Poland), Nathan Mahl, Osibisa...No Nektar for prog? On The Raw, OSI & OsV are really good bands, also Overhead & Ovrfwrd get overlooked by many...
Eric and Chad-spot on with Opeth's Damnation. Steven's choice of No-Man, Together We're Stranger - brilliant album and superb production. Another great show gentlemen. Lots to buy!! Many thanks.
Phenomenal show . Thanks for the intro to some new music . N Nektar No-man No Sound - great Italian prog- alt - post Rock O The Owl Service ( psyche folk prog) Osibisa - African soul prog Orchestra Luna - weird pop, prog, jazz HM New order Nucleus Orchestral maneuvers National Health Odyssey - lost psyche band
Chuck - that Osibisa album is fire!!! Also, awesome pick with Neu!, and showing love for the Boingo. I remember the O.S.I. debut that Chad picked. Actually pretty good. The brief digression on the panelists' early music memories (somewhere a bit past the midway point) was most interesting, and unexpected. Ken - The O artist at around 1:13:00 that you wouldn't talk about? Oh, nevermind - I suddenly remembered something George said in the comments at an earlier part in this series, lol. Cool one!
After a system meltdown, I am finally back from the abyss. My current Top 3's are: 3. Niacin "Time Crunch" 2. National Health "s/t" 1. Nektar "Remember the Future" 3. Office a Strategic Influence (OSI) "s/t" 2. Michael Oldfield "Tubular Bells" 1. Opeth "Damnation"
Mike here not Anne, but thank you so much Ken for mentioning "Oregon" one of my all time favorite groups who I've seen about a dozen times since the mid '70s. About three of those times with the Great Colin Walcot.
Thanks gents, great show as ever, more explorations to undertake! My choices: 3. National Health "Of Queues and Cures" 2. Naxatras "IV" 1. Nektar "Remember the Future" 3. Oresund Space Collective "Organic Earthly Flotation" 2. Omega "The Hall of Floaters in the Sky" 1. Ozric Tentacles "Pungent Effulgent" HMs: Narrow Pass ; Neu ; Nice Beaver ; No Name ; Novalis ; Now ; Opeth ; L'0rme ; Osiris .
Greetings. My N choices 1. Nektar , 2. Nine Stones Close, 3. National Health HM: Need, Native Window (Kansas members), Niacin 1. Mike Oldfield, 2. Opeth, 3. Osada Vida (Polish prog rock / metal) HM: Out of Focus, Ozric Tentacles
before I watch-N: 3. Nektar - SUCH GREAT ALBUMS! 2. Naked City - John Zorn led quartet that could switch from grindcore to country in a split-second 1. National Health - phenomenal jazz rock, and Phil Miller is an undersung genius on guitar! and for O: 3. Organisation - synth pioneers who went on to form Kraftwork. this has more improv and atmosphere 2. Le Ormé - Italian psych that found its way into prog. 1. OOIOO - all-female Japanese band that sounds like a reincarnated Mwandishi Group and an amazing live band!
That Osanna album, Palepoli, is a real blast. The flute-led jam near the beginning of side 2 is just INSANE! That woodwind player is just blowing his freakin' lungs out - always puts a smile on my face.! Terrific LP.
Finally you guys mention John Zorn’s Naked City and the guitarist was Bill Frisell , bass was Fred Frith, Wayne Horvitz on keys, Joey Baron on Drums, Yamatsuka Eye on vocals and Zorn leader sax snd vocals. I followed them on tour. Payton sang on a few tours
Much was said last night about National Health from our distinguished panel. If you are not familiar with this band, based on some of the comments, it might seem they are a bit of an acquired taste(?), but as a relative newbie to prog, they are not only accessible but extremely enjoyable. My buy today was Le Orme - Felona, never heard of them. A lot of what I go with I don't listen to, prior to purchase, because I trust you guys implicitly. Also got Aurora Clara lately based on Pete's/Eric's review, so can't wait to listen to this. I'm swimming in cd's (!), bought over the past few years, and half (at least a hundred plus) I still have to get to. There are a lot of certain references on in the prog seat which I appreciate and let's just say they have doubled the pleasure (as one can imagine) of so many first time listens of all the great bands and albums that have been discovered in recent years.
Not to totally drown you in new music but Aurora Clara's first Transformation is also really good (in addition to their newest one)...Never really got into National Health much but their Complete compilation is pretty good
@@wolf1977 Thanks for the shout out, Wolf, and your recommendation of Transformation. Oh, I'm sure its only a matter of time until I get that one, too, if I like the other as much as I expect I will. Like with Agitation Free (shout out to Ken), after I got the 2nd, I had to get the first, too, and I'm so glad I did. Other worldly stuff. As far as NH, I own the first two but have only listened to the first thus far and loved it.
@@wolftree3948 More bad news🤷♂: For Agitation Free you also need to get Shibuya Nights (live), Fragments, The Other Side Of & River Of Return. I also have Last & At Cliffs Of River Rhine but those aren't 'must own' albums like the others
@@wolf1977 I recently got the 3 cd / 1 dvd of AF 'Last, Fragments, and Live '74', so we're definitely on the same page. I'll get there, too, eventually but my listening strategy is to spread things out a bit so I have something to look forward to with bands that don't have a ton of offerings.
Let's not forget Novalis! Their live album Konzerte is yet another of those all-time killer German prog live albums along with Jane's "At Home Live" and Grobschnitt's "Solar Music Live." My favorite O band is Le Orme, just barely edging out Opeth. Aldo Tagliapietra's voice is just soooo good. One of the all-time best prog vocalists.
Great show, guys. Great call on Oysterhead and Oingo Bongo, Chuck. Superb call on Oceansize, Luis!, a very underrated and superb band. Two great absents on the show: Needlepoint from Norway, to me one of the best bands on the scene today, and Oranssi Pazuzu from Finland! My favourite band right now (they started on 2007), they mix black metal, kraut, psychedelic, space, prog, even shoegazze, and all of their albums are great and somewhat different, please listen to them if you haven't.
My list for N & O: 1. Ozric Tentacles - Erpland 2. Nektar - A Tab in the Ocean 3. Neu! - '75 I've only heard that one album from Nektar but it was pretty great.
Mikeal was curator for a day on Roadburn 2014. Because of him i saw Magma. Thank you Mikael. During the show he was in the crowd watching Magma with a big smile on his face.

Great show as always. Among the not mentioned: - Noetra : great french chamber/ECM like progressive music - Not a Good Sign : excellent italian prog band with F.Zago from Yugen and Paolo Botta from SKE. - Once and Future Band : amazing american band.Sounds between Todd Rundgren, George Duke and Steely Dan. - Mike Oldfield : everybody knows him!!!
It's very strange for me the panel didn't mention Mike Oldfield so much. I Know he hasn't sold so many records in the USA, but Tubular Bells has sold 20 million worldwide and he is very big in the UK and all over Euope!
Lots of love for Opeth...which is great. Im not a fan of the growls BUT i think of it as a hark back to viking throat singing so at least has old roots. Plus sometimes the growls bring excitement to a track (Demon of the Fall for example).
Yeah I barely have anything for either so I'm mixing them. 1. Nektar: Recycled - One of my favorite albums from a pretty spotty band. 2. Novela: Miwakugeki - Kickass japanese prog rock with some early 80s metal influences. 3. Othyrworld: Beyond Into The Night Of Day - Cool prog metal album from the early 2000s. Kinda cheating because it was initially an album called Of The Sun and Moon by Sacred Blade, but S is a much more prolific letter so here you go.
Ne Obliviscaris - extreme prog metal with violin Naked City-avant jazz grindcore noise prog lounge. But Luis gave the wrong name for their guitarist. It was actually Bill Frisell. Nine Inch Nails: nope, it’s not prog. But the sound world Reznor has created is world class, and there is definitely progressive-ness across the span of the discography. Also, Bob Ezrin and Adrian Belew have collaborated with NIN. Opeth Obscura The Orb: electronic music with elements of dub, ambient, world music, and dance. Love the album Orbus Terrarum. They also did a collab album with David Gilmour.
Another great show guys. N was very tough for me. O however would be: 3. Oceans of Slumber. Cammie Gilbert's voice is just silk to me. Their latest Starlight and Ash is genius. 2. Orphaned Land. Brilliant mix of metal with symphonic sounds and Middle Eastern touches. 1. Has to be Opeth. Like Pete I would pick Blackwater Park. It falls easily into the perfect album category.
Oblivion Sun - self-titled, O.S.I -self-titled , Oceansize - Efflorance, Nil - Nil Nov...,Nektar - Tab in the Ocean, Nightwish (must be heard and SEEN live!!) M&D listened to Tijuana Brass and Engelbart Humperdinck they didn't understand Jimmi
Well, here are my picks in alphabetical order: N 1.-Naked City (Avantgarde jazz/ grind-core from the USA) -Naked City [1990] 2.-News from Babel (Avant-prog from the UK)-Letters Home [1986] 3.-No Secrets in the Family (Avant-prog from Switzerland)-In a Certain Light we all Appear Green [1987] H.M. Bill Nelson’s Red Noise, Non Credo O Opeth (Progressive Death Metal/ Progresive Rock from Sweden)-Ghost Reveries [2005] & In Cauda Venenum [2019]. Orthotonics (Avant-prog from the USA )-Luminous Bipeds [1986]. Organ: (Avant garde Black Metal/Experimental Metal from Norway)-Everything Is Pared Down. Minimal Expectations. [2018]. H.M. Oingo Boingo, One Shot
O: 1.Oresund Space Collective 2.Ozric Tentacles 3.Le Orme 4.Osanna 5.Opeth HMs: One Shot Oblivion Sun Obskuria Ocinarah Oceansize Odin Old Man and the Sea Mike Oldfield Omega Opus 5 OSE Oulu Space Jam Collective Out of Focus Ovrfwrd Orphand Land
I think there is more than enough N's and O's for each to have their own episode. No Man Nosound Nordic Giants (better live than studio). The rest Necromandus, North Atlantic Oscillation, and getting extreme Nurse With Wound. Opeth OSI Oceansize, and Osiris Club, Oranssi Pazuzu. I think the first Oceansize album is such an important part of the 3rd generation of progressive music.
With the letter N I would choose 1. Naverone (more rock then prog, but still good). 2. Nits (quircky) 3. New Triumvirat (the band Triumvirat had to rename because of some reasons). H.M. The Nice. With the letter O I would choose 1. Mike Oldfield, 2. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and 3. Sally Oldfield (Water Bearer is good). Don't know that many others.
I have also seen Oregon with Trilok Gurtu. After the show I went backstage and talked to the band. I had Out of the Woods with me and asked the guys to sign it. The inner gatefold is a pic with the band sitting in the grass. The guys wrote their names above their own heads “on the sky”. Gurtu signed his name above the head of Collin Walcott. Right then I was mildly pissed: How dare he write his name above Collin Walcott?! _Collin Walcott The Legend._ He could have chosen the upper right corner instead. Later on, I have listened to a lot of his solo stuff and I realized what a phenomenal musician he is. I have seen Oregon again on tour after their Ecotopia album. That time they wrote their names on a high quality [thick, didn’t get punctured when they signed] napkin. Which I don’t have any more ☹ Mike Oldfield is also worth an honorable mention for Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Incantations, which is my favorite. The rest of his discography is… …
Again, an education. Thanks. And I will give Opeth a try - I just can't get into the Storm Corrosion record (with Steven Wilson and Mikal) which has put me off of Opeth. My picks are: N: 3. The Nice (Five Bridges was a true gateway for me); .2. Nektar (Down to Earth for me); 1. National Health (the first album). HM is Amy X. Neuberg, a Bay Area cellist and vocalist who has a great array of interesting music. O: 3. Oho (Recollections), a Baltimore band that always connects with me as they have trended all over the place; 2. Orchestra Baobab (Specialists All Styles)- an African jazzy / dance band from Senegal that have Cuban influences; 1. Le Orme - too many great albums to pick just one. HMs - Mike Oldfield. The early albums still resonate, especially Ommadawn; Once and Future Band, kind of an updated Yacht Rock version of Steely Dan from Oakland.
Great picks from Ken as usual especially in picking New Trolls and Osanna - and personally I'd have had The Nice as one of my 3 and Niacin. O's would be Opeth, Mike Oldfield and Osanna. New Trolls - fantastic band - yes from around 76/77 onwards they went very pop and disco, but the ones Ken mentioned are just great and the break off band's first abum 'Canti d'innocenza, canti d'esperienza' just had a question mark as the cover then they named themselves Ibis. They were great and Maurizio Salvi, who was on keyboards for the first flush of New Trolls and was in Ibis alongside New Trolls guitarist Nico Di Palo, returned with UT New Trolls who are fantastic releasing a couple of great albums and a live DVD - e - and e in concerto are well worth checking out. Original guitarist Nico Di Palo had a serious car crash that left him with significant diabilities, though he teamed up with Vittorio De Scalzi, again from the original New Trolls who when Nico and Maurizio split off contnued with New Trolls Atomic system on keys and guitar -the more fusion type albums that are fantastic. DeScalzicontinued the band after Di Palo returned though Scalzi didnt, with the addition of Ricky Belloni from Nuova Idea. They did a Concerto Grosso 2 that wasnt quite as good as CG1 and then they went in a pop and disco direction until splitting in 92. Thise albums arent prog or fusion in any way though I admit t liking a fair bit of it but then I'm easily pleased and quite like sugar and cheese. I think the live CD that Luis was referring to was an outdoor concert with DeScalzi's New Trolls, that DiPalo appeared on on keys (he cannnot play guitar any more due to his injuries). Released in 2007 I think its fantastic - they go through all three Concerto Grossos - they released the third Concerto Grosso - The Seven Seasons in 2007 - and yes there are the ocassional sugary candy floss moments however as a whole its extremely likeable and Andrea Maddalone is great on guitar. There have been various iterations of the band from the 2000s onwards with De Scalzi's La Leggenda New Trolls and La Storia New Trolls and Belloni in another- Il Mito New Trolls with Di Palo flitting between them all, and then there's Scalzi's UT New Trolls that also features original New Trolls drummer Gianni Belleno who also flitted between most of them.. Sadly De Scalzi died in July. Dont know if Salvi is continuing with hs version, Ricky Belloni seems to be carrying on with his version that also has George Usai who was on keyboards for the pop and disco period. One thing all versions seem to always do though is play excerpts from Concerto Grosso 1 and sometimes CG 2.
Hey Ken, thanks for putting Ozric on your list, and I’m sure someone has already said, that Ozric’s are still alive, and in fact touring, and playing with Gong very soon in England!
@@wolf1977 ya, they dabble in many genres, but they are amazing. I e got the remaster box set on order coming out next month! What I’m really hoping for is a surround mix!
KEN Ozric Tentacles are together they are touring with Gong in the U.K. this month, tried to get tickets, for the Leeds Gig but sold out. Osibisa saw them in the 70’s at Leeds University supporting Lindisfarne, saw them later on too, but just can’t remember where. Surprised nobody as mentioned a band that defines the letter O. Which is, a band called O, who later shortened it to The O Band. Anyway a big thanks to everyone.

I filed all of my Neal Morse albums under 'Neal Morse' instead of 'Neal Morse Band' (and so excluded them here as being a name under 'M'). Otherwise The Grand Experiment, The Similitude of a Dream, The Great Adventure & Innocence & Danger would put Neal right up there...
@@carstenselberg1255 Yeah they're also listed separately on Wiki, but then again they also separate his albums into Singer-songwriter albums/Prog albums (aren't most of 'em prog?)/Worship albums/NMB. I lumped the NMB/Singer-Songwriter/Prog albums all together under 'Neal Morse', didn't really see the need to break them out separately - at least for my purposes. NMB seems to be distinct in having Mike Portnoy & Randy George (plus others) aboard/usually Eric Gillette, while the 'real' Morse solo albums (the Wiki singer-songwriter group) is more of a Morse solo show (plus various guests)

Nice picks Sal
I couldn't leave out Ohm/Ohmfrey under fusion (Chris Poland), Nathan Mahl, Osibisa...No Nektar for prog? On The Raw, OSI & OsV are really good bands, also Overhead & Ovrfwrd get overlooked by many...
Eric and Chad-spot on with Opeth's Damnation. Steven's choice of No-Man, Together We're Stranger - brilliant album and superb production. Another great show gentlemen. Lots to buy!! Many thanks.
Thanks John!
great to see Oregon mentioned, might be a topic for a In the Prog Seat show, top ten ECM records?
Top ten ECM records would be super interesting.

Cool one!
Happy Anniversary, Ken!

I saw New England open for Styx in 1979 at the Michigan State Fair.
before I watch-N:
3. Nektar - SUCH GREAT ALBUMS!
2. Naked City - John Zorn led quartet that could switch from grindcore to country in a split-second
1. National Health - phenomenal jazz rock, and Phil Miller is an undersung genius on guitar!
and for O:
3. Organisation - synth pioneers who went on to form Kraftwork. this has more improv and atmosphere
Mike Patton sat in for Eye
Hope you enjoy the Aurora Clara!! Thanks for watching
Sommerabend kinda nice album too. I heard opposite opinion about it as a 'snoozefest'. Well I think you should be in certain mood to appreciate it.
Hey Ken off to see Ozric Tentacles full band gig on Saturday here in Liverpool. With Gong on same bill
Nice show, thanks! Nektar, Mike Oldfield and Opeth are mine.
Opeth’s Blackwater Park is a masterpiece. That was my entry point into the band back in the day.

3. Oregon
My list for N & O:
1. Ozric Tentacles - Erpland

3. Neu! - '75
I've only heard that one album from Nektar but it was pretty great.
Mikeal was curator for a day on Roadburn 2014. Because of him i saw Magma. Thank you Mikael.
During the show he was in the crowd watching Magma with a big smile on his face.

- Mike Oldfield : everybody knows him!!!
Nice shout out to October Project. Very prog-ish.

YOU WANTED THE BEST...YOU GOT THE BEST...THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD...
NISS!
LOL!
Lmao 👍💯
Or in Germany NIZZ!
Lol
Ne Obliviscaris - extreme prog metal with violin
Naked City-avant jazz grindcore noise prog lounge.
Opeth
Obscura
The Orb: electronic music with elements of dub, ambient, world music, and dance. Love the album Orbus Terrarum. They also did a collab album with David Gilmour.

Another great show guys. N was very tough for me. O however would be:
Needlepoint needs to be mentioned

The Ocean as well. Can't forget them.
I think there is more than enough N's and O's for each to have their own episode.
No Man
Nosound
Nordic Giants (better live than studio).
The rest Necromandus, North Atlantic Oscillation, and getting extreme Nurse With Wound.
Opeth
OSI
Oceansize,
and Osiris Club, Oranssi Pazuzu.
Which I don’t have any more ☹
Mike Oldfield is also worth an honorable mention for Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Incantations, which is my favorite. The rest of his discography is… …
Great pick George with Octavision. Hovak has a 10 year old daughter who's a great bass player. Her you tube is ellenplaysbass.
N:
Nektar, Nice, Nirvana (sixties)
O:
Le Orme, Mike Oldfield, Octobre (mentions : Omega, Sally Oldfield)
I have Ozric under 'psychedelic' (with proggy tendencies). Afterswish is probably my fave record

@@wolf1977 They call them selves Neal Morse Band or NMB When I saw them in Hamburg this summer
