There's a HUGE DIFFERENCE between a fat Turk and fat American. I can tell from a far who is who on a crowded beach. Sadly, Americans (people who came from all continents) are not guilty for that, but American food politics after WW2.
I think that can be attributed to their diet. They eat a lot of greens and herbs. And almost all their dishes are cooked with olive oil. Another factor is the type of jobs they work in. Most of them are craftsmen (builders, artisan workers, farmers.. etc) jobs that take a lot of effort and energy. That is why they seem pretty fit and slim compared to other Arabs.
I wish I had that kind of rhythm in me. I’m Irish and the Irish music always gets me. But I can see rich heritage and culture in this video and I hope it lives forever.
Except my housemate and good buddy, he's Leb and he's short and hairy and can't dance, but if I told him that he'd get pissed and shout at me in Arabic lol

I’ve not done any research on this tradition. However from watching the dance it seems to celebrate strength, trust and brotherhood. While the first man does have to have the strength and stamina the person next to him holding his hand is supporting his weight and helping him to stay balanced. I've never witnessed anything but class in a Dabke line. Often the lawweeh is fascinating to watch as the leader, who can make more artistic and difficult steps; while holding a masbaha, or beads line, handkerchief, or stick, and controls the energy and tempo of the line. Totally mesmerising and always leaves me transfixed ...

My grandma was born in the 1890s and came to Canada from Lebanon. I always remember her talking about what she called the hanky dance. She loved her homeland so much… I will never ever forget her cooking. She grew grape leaves in the backyard… It was the best memory I’ve had of my childhood. She was such a strong and good woman who’s love for me I’ll never forget. This dance was amazing and made me wonder what she must have been like as a child and growing up into a young woman. My grandma was born in the 1890s and came to Canada from Lebanon. I always remember her talking about what she called the hanky dance. She loved her homeland so much… I will never ever forget her cooking. She grew grape leaves in the backyard… It was the best memory I’ve had of my childhood. She was such a strong and good woman who’s love for me I’ll never forget. This dance was amazing and made me wonder what she must have been like as a child and growing up into a young woman. Thanks for posting. 🙏🏼💖🙏🏼
