Having made 19 shorts, some that played in festivals, some that won awards, I have come to the conclusion that shorts are all but pointless… they are great for developing skills and practicing craft, they are good for reel footage and to help get future work, or as a proof of concept for something bigger…but that’s about it. A short, by itself, isn’t really going to accomplish anything beyond that. That’s why I’m done with shorts, and I’m in post on my first feature. I’m with you on that, Jake. Features are the thing to be doing now.

Come september I'm probably done with shorts for this year, but I'll bring 'em back out for next summer.

I love shorts! They are always hit or miss, but that's the beauty of it. When you go to an indie film festival and you watch blocks of shorts, you never know what to expect, but there's always at least one that you'll end up absolutely loving, and one you'll end up hating with passion. It's really fun!

Can I just say how glad I am that you’re making updates again. I’m looking forward to seeing how the film comes together.
POPS was one of the big things that got me into filmmaking, and at the moment I’m in the midst of effects work on my TV Pilot that has been my big project over the past couple of years.
In regards to shorts. It’s never been something that I’ve been interested in making, mainly because they never felt as legitimate as a longer piece of media like an Full episode of something or a film. Which is probably why it’s not something I’ve attempted in my own work.

aww i missed the timelapses, fun to see them again!! I don't watch many shorts but I've definitely seen some here on youtube that have stuck with me!! i think way too much about medium specificity and there are some concepts that just work best in short bursts! One Another by Sammy Paul is my go-to example

This is a great take. I’ve never been able to put my finger on how I feel about this.

Pixar is probably responsible for the majority of the shorts I've watched. I do enjoy them. Two Set Violin just dropped one and that was cool.

This is really cool, I do enjoy shorts from time to time. I'm about to make some so I've started watching them more often, it's a very unique art form & some people really thrive in it. I think I have fun ideas so looking forward to making it happen

Hey Jake, I noticed you blurred the left screen on certain things during the timelapse, but the angle of it against the framed PoPS image makes it where you can also see a reflection of that screen. Figured I'd bring it up just in case that wasn't intentional and you wanted to do something about it going forward. ^-^

Someone's gotta make a first fright logo so Jake can end the video properly

Shorts were never something I found myself wanting to watch, certainly not something I would seek out. But then "Black Mirror" (which I guess is kind of shorts - long shorts?) got me interested in more contained / bottled stories and later "Love, Death and Robots" introduced me to proper shorts, and so I have been a lot more open to shorts in the last few years. But I am not deep in to film culture, so my exposure to them is still pretty limited.

Glad I saw someone mention Love, Death and Robots as I think that has a great variety of interesting ideas executed neatly for about 10 minutes, but also some of those stories Jake mentioned where they try to tell a more powerful story. Not a film guy myself but I think some of the more 'serious' stories in the anthology land really well

I like shorts in theory, but I don't really find myself seeking out live action ones all that often. The thing is, there is almost definitely a world of incredible stories out there in short format, that aren't known about because people just don't engage with them. Some people do, but films get popular by way of general audiences, and they typically aren't interested in shorts. The idea of 'watching a film' is something we are all familiar with, and it's associated with a commitment of multiple hours. If someone wants to do it, they will either go to the theater, or get comfortable on the couch, and you don't really do either of those things for something that's only going to last 10-15 minutes. So shorts just don't get popular, and as a result, we don't hear about them! It's kind of a shame really. Better cinephiles than me go looking for the good ones. Maybe I should start doing that too 🤔.
Having said all of that, I do watch a lot of animated shorts, mainly old ones because there is a ton of them on UA-cam, and I have no idea why I started doing that, but not doing the same for live action. I'm a deeply illogical individual.

What are your thoughts on things like Omeleto and Short of the Week? Are you familiar with those/have you ever considered submitting to them for any projects?
