I met him at the Pittsburgh airport in 1985 when I was in the Air force on a layover to JFK. Walked over and shook his hand and introduced myself, I remember his hand was so huge I felt like a child shaking an adults hand. When we loaded the plane to my surprise he sat right in the seat behind me. I talked to him the entire flight, he didn't know me from Adam, we talked like he knew me my entire life. No a bit of ego or conceit in the guy, hell he even was asking me questions about my life. He even bought my drinks, wouldn't let me pay at all. What a great guitarist and even a better human being. R.I.P. Stevie...G.O.A.T.

Crazy that I just found this today, as it’s 33 years today that Stevie flew on back to Heaven. Loved your reaction! Listen to the song again, knowing that sounds he was making with his guitar were representing the pain of the sudden death of his dear friend Charlie. The white guitar he switches to was a gift from Charlie, hand made for Stevie Ray. ❤️ Donna G

Rock guitar legend, Eric Clapton said he was blown away with how Stevie could play without taking a break. Eric said that when most guitar players play a solo they need to resort to playing chords so that they can figure out what direction they want to go in next. Eric also said that Stevie could channel the music from where ever it is that Stevie’s mind goes, down through his soul and into his hands. My brother saw Stevie two weeks before he died in a helicopter crash. Stevie and his band Double Trouble opened for Joe Cocker that night. My brother said he had never heard of Stevie Ray Vaughn before that concert and left being a huge Stevie fan.

Throughout this song, stevie switched guitars, picked his pick up that he dropped, adjust amps multiple times, plays behind his back, give a motivational speech, plays with his teeth, loses a tooth while playing with his teeth, looks around for tooth all w/o missing a beat. It safe to say that SRV is the best, the GOAT

There is really nothing to say when you hear such a great performance from SRV. The expression on your face said it all- you were obviously so moved you were literally holding back tears. SRV didn't play music, he was the music and it just flowed out of him with no effort at all. It's not just the technical ability (a lot of guitar players can be just as good technically), it's the feeling and how he expressed it with such feeling. As you said, every note is perfectly placed and executed in ways that noboy else will ever be able to duplicate.
It was really great to see your thoughts and reaction to this video because you are a guitar player and can appreciate and know what it takes for SRV to get those sounds out of that strat. Most all other people reviewing this video know for sure that they are hearing something truly great, but they don't understand why like you do.
One reviewer summed it up perfectly- what is the point of taking guitar lessons after hearing SRV.

  • @bailey5408

I hope you know by now that he could not read or write music. Absolutely natural talent and playing by ear. That's why he was adjusting the strings and the amps, because he could hear the slightest deviation. Legend...

Saw him in 86. I was considered a really good guitar player in my day, always felt I could play with most. But after Stevie. His masterful use of tone. I couldn't stop staring a his hands as he made blink-of -an -eye changes to volume and tone. He was the all time best with the wah and would use phrasing with the volume and tone controls and the swithches. My friend looked at me and said " WTF did we just see!" I'll tell you. Time to put the guitars away. No sense in it anymore.

@Christopher&Frederik- I also find myself tearing up listening to Stevie's magick. The emotion flows so easily when he plays. It's just amazing. Some lyrics have done that for me, but he is the only musician whose sound has put me in my real house and make it almost a religious experience. 13ga strings also helps with the tone. Not that the same string, hell same guitar in the hands of anyone else could sound as pure as when in the gifted hands of SRV. I'm an old guy so I've seen SRV in concert twice. 1st time I was 15 and didn't know anything about SRV. I was there for the headliner and SRV opened. It's only fitting that SRV play this Guitar for this song, written in honor of his friend that passed, Charlie.

... because SRV's dear friend "Charlie" built that White Guitar, by hand, specifically for SRV. This Song was written by SRV, in honor of his dear friend, Charlie, and that's why this Guitar is named "Charlie too. Later... Keep Smiling... Cheers...

He switched guitars because the song was about a friend of Stevie's who died. The friend made him the white guitar.

No he didn’t break a string. That white guitar name is Charlie because a guy named Charlie made it for him and this song is about Charlie as he died suddenly and unexpectedly. The long story made short when SRV did Charlie’s song he used Charlie’s guitar.

Without a doubt my fav player, on a scale of 1 to 10 for that guitar gut wrenching effect, guess that would be around the billion mark!!!! if ya looking for other amazing gut wrenching solos in different styles check out Lindsey Buckingham / Fleetwood Mac live 85 The Chain, yeah this stuff although inspiring kinda wants ya to take the guitar back to the shop and tell em it ain't workin' there's obviously lots of notes missing!!! ;-)

The reason that SRV Changed guitars is because of the Song that he was playing, (not a broken string).. SRV wrote this song,"Life Without You," " for a very dear friend of his that had recently passed away AND it just so happens that this deceased friend built that guitar, by hand, just for SRV, so it is only fitting that he play this guitar, (named "Charlie"), for this Song! If you haven't guessed it yet, his friend was named "Charlie." There is so much more going on here than SRV simply playing a song. Keep Smiling...

Stevie got that sound by using heavy strings (almost like bass strings lol) and I'm not sure but I think he was tuned to E....the rest is pure talent!

Stevie would tell you “keep trying.” In his sweet quiet voice. Also, how do you tune your guitar? He tuned his down to Eflat. What size strings do you use? I think he used 11gage custom strings on Charlie, but I know on -#1 and Lenny he used 13.

Try you some Gary Moore. I like red house or still got the blues, but he had a wide and diverse catalog of music. Another would be good is Alvin Lee. I could go on, but there's two to get you going. Read up on the red axe Gary plays it's got a distinct sound, and there's a reason why.

He usees 13 gage strings. But you should use 11's. And Stevie worked at it 4 7 hours a day everyday fot 365 days a year. You put the time into somethin' you love it's gonna show. The more you work at it the better ya'll will get at it. ❤❤ That's what my brother did. ❤❤ ya'll can do it to just work at it. Where are you from? Go down to Austin Texas and see where Tommy Katona is playin' he will try and help ya'll he's a good guy. ❤❤ Check out Stevie Ray Vaughan live at the festival a song called 3rd stone from the sun.
