  • The Great Selkie of Sule Skerry is a folk ballad found in Orkney and Shetland. The Shetland version was first published in 1850, and was later listed as a (Francis James) Child ballad 113, whereas the Orcadian version »The Grey Selchie of Sule Skerry« was first published more than 80 years later in the Orcadian newspaper. The original tune has been collected in Orkney (Flotta), yet the tune associated with the ballad today is not traditional, but written by Jim Waters in 1954.
It tells a story of a woman who nurses a baby and laments that she doesn't know the father of her child. A baby boy's father comes in - it's a selkie, a changeling, a creature of the sea. He is taking the child with him, foretelling the woman that she will marry a gunner who will shot him and their son.
Selkie of Sule Skerry has been recorded by many artists during and after the 60s folk revival on both sides of the Atlantic (from Joan Baez, The Byrds, Trees, June Tabor, Alasdair Roberts and many more).
