@@L33Reacts Check out "Jean Genie" (1972/UK#2). It's another Glam/Ziggy-era non-LP single by Bowie. It was a major hit, only held off from the number one UK spot by Sweet "The Block Buster" - another Glam stomper with an identical beat to the Bowie song. The two acts were on the same label (RCA), too. Maybe play them back-to-back, next week? Just a suggestion...
"Memories of a Free Festival", thanks for bringing that back ! Always loved it. It met my feelings being part of some smaller and bigger festivals half a century ago. I thought life and the future just would be a big party full of love, peace and marijuana. Well, at least one of these is still going on.
I'm so excited for Bowie Wednesday! Yesterday I rewatched the Conversation Piece / God Knows / Free festival video. I love your reaction during Conversation Piece at the point of "I'm invisible and dumb and no one will recall me". I have listened to that song for years and years and it gets me every single time! So happy that you're doing my suggestion of John, I'm only dancing. Can't wait to see and hear what you think! Nick
Thank you for starting a second Bowie journey of non-LP material. It's a deep and rich vein of additional genius that you'll find every bit as rewarding as the albums. No going back now! Of course, now you'll have to hit his also-single-only remake, "John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)," recorded three years after this '72 track, but not released until 1979.
The "Bowie at the Beeb" double CD (there is also a triple version) has live BBC sessions recorded between 1968 and 1971 with all kinds of stuff from the David Bowie, Space Oddity and Man Who Sold the World albums. There is even a (short) version of Memory of a Free Festival by David Bowie & The Hype (= Mick Ronson, Tony Visconti and John Cambridge) as well as Unwashed, Cygnet Committee, Wide Eyed Boy etc. plus a sprinkling of good-natured banter from John Peel. The second CD is a very fine concert from June 2000 and the third (which I don't have) is live sessions from the Spiders From Mars period. Worth it, I reckon, for the transition from the slightly awkward "Anthony Newley" period to his increasingly confident discovery of his own style(s).
"John, I'm Only Dancing" was a single-only release that came out at the peak of the Ziggy era and it's even included on later reissues of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy. Non-LP singles have always been a part of UK Pop and Rock.
I read that “John” was John Lennon, who Bowie was reacting to after Lennon had allegedly said something critical of Bowie. Not sure if true. Bowie also referred to John in “Life on Mars” in the line “Lennon’s on sale again.” Bowie also uses the Lennon lyric “I read the news today, oh boy” in “Young Americans.”
Id love to see your reaction to Teenage wild life track off of Scary monsters album ..its just such a layered track and very clever instrumentals and Bowie's Vocals are insanely good ..As a now 62 and it takes me straight back to being 18 years old in its release in 1980
Johninonlydancing was dropped from ziggy stardust for some reason.Fame was later .Your so right in what your saying and for the love of god do Low next, the start of the Berlin trilogy.
Regarding artists acting differently today from the way that Bowie had creativity, the one I would say tries harder than most these days is Gaga. Not a huge fan of her music, but she has a great voice and keeps us guessing. From singing with Tony Bennett to her latest Joker movie, the girl is creative and talented. Hardest worker for the Superbowl halftime show too.
John, I'm Only Dancing is another among a small series of songs Bowie wrote that reinforces his bisexual image. All The Young Dudes is another. Oddly, although Bowie purposely worked in favor of this image, in truth there are no conformed stories (documented or otherwise) of Bowie spending time other than with women. A possible exception is Angela Bowie's affirmation years later that she once arrived home and found Bowie in bed conversing with Jagger. All improprieties are imagined.
I beg to differ. He had a year long affair with Lindsay Kemp and they remained friends for years. Angie and David met because they were both sleeping with the same male designer/record company PR guy. The night before their wedding they both slept with a Spanish waiter from a gay club in London. lol. The drummer from his first teenage band said there were numerous times they found him in bed with their first manager. Whilst recording "Heroes" he had an affair with legendary Drag Artist and Berlin Club owner Romy Haag. He was what we now call Gender fluid. I worked in the London entertainment industry for years and there are more stories and he never hid any of it. He had many girl friends and boy friends as a young man. He is a legend among the LGBTQ community because of his openness.
@@jkirtleyheacting That he is, shall we say well thought of by the gay community was always well known. My comment rests on an article I read many years ago, possibly 90's or early 2000's, that essentially suggested that of all Bowie's posturing as bisexual, he's only ever seen with beautiful women. More or less concluding that most of it was for show. It was all a calculated step Bowie took to add the unwanted marginalized from the main society into his fan base; which wasn't always big. So that's the picture I kept. Clearly you follow the man with great attention towards his personal life. I stayed within the confounds of artistic expression (music, films, etc.); oblivious somewhat I guess. Funny now. I'm glad I said something and you answered. I would have not know these stories otherwise.
Many different versions of John, I'm Only Dancing and different video edits/versions. Both songs are great. Your morning show today rocks!. It seems you haven't played Young Americans 1975/Station to Station 1976/Low 1977/Heroes 1978/The Lodger 1979 (Were'nt you saying you were going to play "I am the DJ")/Scary Monsters and Super Creeps 1980/Let's Dance1982 and everything following that.
"John, I'm Only Dancing" got lots of radio air time. He also released a more funk & dance-oriented version called "John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)". A long time favorite. "Memories of a Free Festival" is totally unfamiliar with me, thought the too-long ending reminds me of other songs with similar stretched endings. It's OK but I don't feel I will be rushing to play it again. It just doesn't push the right buttons. Rock on L33.
Yay! You showed the Nacho Videos reedited version which is better than Mick Rocks original. Nacho is very talented and you should check out his channel. He got access to all the original footage that Mick Rock shot for the video but never made it to the final cut. Nachos reedit uses much of that footage and improves it greatly in my opinion. He has tons of restored videos from the 70's and 80's and is a great talent.
What album next by Bowie? Let’s go !
Young Americans
Young Americans
1. Outside.
If you want to hear something totally different then Young Americans. You will be very surprised.

Thanks Lee both tracks gave me goosebumps taking me back to 1972 - I was 14yo - 😎
The one and only Bowie doing his "thang" Priceless. Thanks Nick and Lee. Blessings all
John I'm only dancing. That bass line is outstanding 😊
@@joyplant6275 it really is. That song is absolutely amazing. I see why it was a single lol
@@L33Reacts lyrically pushed the boundaries as did Lola two years previously and Walk on the Wild Side in the same year.

"It's so different." Yep. Bowie was a unique, singularly amazing genius. There will never be another Bowie. I miss him so much.
@@mibesto8039 I just got introduced to him in the past year for real and I miss him too.. one of a kind

Same..IV has been listening to him for half a century and still can't imagine a world Bowie present in.
Great songs ... like the chorus on both of these

Love "John, I'm Only Dancing", great memories of when it came out in 1972.
Oh so excited for this ! Love John..I'm only dancing...🎉
That was one of his (many) best singles. The video is so good. You are right😍
Had to come back for another listen! This man was absolutely one of our greatest collective treasures.

Bowie was the most sensual person of all time. Miss him and John. ❤
Lee, wow, I am honored if you took my suggestion, so cool!
So, cool, you added Part 2 of "Memory", didn't expect that!
Good call! Glad you suggested this version. Mick is on fire here 😊
I have never heard this version. It's so Bowie, it hurts. ❤

What a work of pure genius.
Keep going with Bowie Wednesday. Great reactions. Yes, the second song featured The Spiders. The Chameleons covered John, I'm Only Dancing.
This is gonna be fun.
Great picks.

John, I'm Only Dancing was a bonus track on the Ziggy Stardust CD
It was mostly a non-album single between Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane.
@davidcopson5800 it's on my Ziggy Stardust CD as a bonus track. And from the video, it certainly looks like it was part of the ZS recording sessions.
You rock too L33! 🥲 ☮❤🎶
I second that motion 🎉

The next Bowie album you should listen now, is Low. This one is a big change. I know, for Bowie, its kinda happening quite often, but...
Used to listen to MOAFF on summers evenings with mates we all had convertibles so would stop somewhere and blast music out happy memories indeed
Bowie.
Actually do not remember those so that is great. My fave Bowie album after Ziggy has always been Pin Ups, it is an album of covers and fantastic.
