This actually proved very helpful for my cosplay! I needed to figure out how to shape and sculpt some feathers and I stumbled upon this video, and I am super grateful for it! Very straightforward and simple/easy to do!

hi dave never used a hot iron but I use a large pin or wire and run it along the quil fast and it will curve as well. nice video and nice mount as well.

I have a bird that I got mounted and many of the feathers are split. Any tips on how to fix this?

You can use a clothes steamer and move it along the feathers and use your other hand to gently put them together

Can't understand why one should "curl" a birds wing-feathers downwards...
No bird is able to bend their feathers by own will. It is the air-pressure that bends the wing-feathers, and then always UP-wards...not down-wards !

I see your point but this is geared more toward human "eye appeal" as with a lot of taxidermy mounts. Most of these animals will be cleaner and better groomed than they ever will be alive in the wild. The science doesn't translate to most hunters/customers, they just want an eye-catching trophy
