When Paul A. Grove was drafted into the United States Army he was assigned to the 492nd Escort Guard Company as a Military Policeman. Grove was in charge of watching over German POWs that were brought stateside during the war.
Eventually Grove found himself transferred to the 89th Infantry Division and shipped off to Europe to help with the Allied push into Germany. Grove would get his first taste of combat crossing the Rhine River under heavy German fire.

As someone who was born and raised on the banks of the Rhine, I'd like to point out that the Rhine has a long history of various armies that crossed it throughout history. When the US Army crossed the Rhine in WWII they were basically in the footsteps of the Romans, who had build two bridges across the Rhine during their invasion of Germania. My own grandfather was drafted in WWII and was a 17 year old radioman in the German Army. Wounded and taken prisoner while fighting in the Münster region in 1945. He sadly passed in 2022, but he was one of the most intelligent men I ever knew. I still have the small American bible that he received while in captivity. He underlined the phrase "blessed be the peacemakers".

I have "Reinders" (Kriese Kleve) relatives and others on both sides of WWI and WWII. I have copies of some of their letters.

@@ronalddesiderio7625 Thank you. Incidentally my hometown was founded by the Romans as a legionary base. Some of their roads and city layout is still visible and in use today. Founded in the 1st century BC.

My Grandfather was an engineer. He traveled through the southwest of France into Germany. He was left behind in a German town on Christmas Eve. His platoon noticed in the middle of their Christmas party and rushed to go find him. He was lucky him and his men weren't found by the Germans.

I remember both my Grandfathers dying. Both served in WWII. It was tough to see Oscar all messed up in the Rest Home. Nick died peacefully in his sleep.

My uncle was infantry WW2, Korea, Vietnam. I grew up to be an MP during Desert Storm. Old joke was MP stood for Mop pusher. Or multi purpose.

Hes the most non chaulant guy I've heard, he's probably the guard to have if ur a Kraut POW. Sounds laid back. Only one to survive that boat explosion, amazing.
