- Naval News recently toured the Philippine Navy's Naval Operating Base Subic with LCDR Rey Sontilla Nosa, the executive officer
=====================
The Philippines is currently expanding its naval bases to service its newly acquired naval vessels arriving within the next three years as part of efforts to bolster the country's defense capabilities amid growing tensions in the South China Sea.
In Subic, Zambales, where the Philippine Navy inaugurated a Naval Operating Base in March 2022, the XO told Naval News that ongoing upgrades are being implemented to accommodate future capital ships.
Subic Bay was the site of the US' largest overseas naval facility until Washington withdrew from its military bases in the Philippines in 1991.
Since then, both Philippine and American military forces have been utilising the 262-square-mile area to facilitate resupply, refueling, and repair of vessels. Subic's port facilities also support the delivery of US military equipment into the Philippines during bilateral exercises.

Philippines and the US made a very strategic mistake by not renewing the base agreement in 1991. Spent much of my time there 1985-1991.
USA didn't make the mistake, US was asked to leave. Philippine president at the time wanted to get closer to China and look how that turned out. 3 decades later Philippines is begging for US to go back to Philippines.
@@everypitchcounts4875 Think its the other way round, Without the Philippines, the US Navy will be pretty much forced out of Asia apart from Guam. The Chinese Navy is now bigger than the US Navy and in terms of power almost matched and will overtake in capability. The US realises that it needs solid port facilities surrounding China, and helping the Philippines up gun and base US assets there is mutually beneficial

Sure is a different Subic than I was at in 1963!

Mabuhay and Welcome to the Philippines Naval News hope you enjoy your stay 🌴🏝️🌴
Apparently, this current base is just a temporary measure as the Philippine Navy is planning to build the permanent NOB-Subic at the Cubi Point area, together with the Philippine Air Force and Philippine Coast Guard.
Hyundai Heavy Industries will be using the former Hanjin shipyard for constructing ships ordered by the Philippine Navy and to service US Navy ships for repairs in partnership with Cerberus Capital Management.
I have met several USA Vets. They did recall their jobs in Cubi point. They have hospital there that they closed during the pull out. These Filipino politicians need to get out of their own coconut shell and stay away from the Commies that make their pockets full.

all capital ships in one port...This gonna be a Imperial Japan Truk harbor moment
well as of now, since there are only a very few ships available and as the modernization of the ph military and navy only has been boosted just in few recent years back. But in the near future there would be more naval bases, coz realistically it would be impossible to defend an archipelagic country with only 1 port.
The technology nowadays can tract enemy movement instantaneously. Anyway there are a lot more bases in the Southern part of the Philippines. Its been kept secret.
There are 2 other large navy bases in Palawan
I missed Subic Naval Base when still under the USA i was temporary duty in our Detachment COMFAIRWESTPAC at Naval Air Station Cubi Point in 1973-74 and again i was stationed at Supply Department, Aviation Support at Naval Air Station Cubi Point in 1976-79...Filam USN retired watchinng from Glendale, California USA ☺

US and Philippines are operating a joint drone task force.
2:32 del Pilar class "frigates". They should really reclassify them to frigates, including maintaining JRCs as frigates
not enough to be called frigates
No air defense missiles nor any anti-ship missiles so Del Pilar class couldn't be called Frigates as per PN class designation. The Rizal class though can be redesignated to Corvettes as the newer ones the Malvar class can be redesignated as Frigates due to bigger than the JRC.
@@solo_adventure Agreed. No ASM or AAM capability nor ciws. These are OPVs which in fact was what they were Weather Heavy Endurance cutters (WHEC) of the USCG.
@@solo_adventure that's only the case if basing PhN's current classification guidelines which can be revised since the frigate designation is actually broad. If current classification stays, then putting VSR-SAMs like Mistral or Martlet might be enough as minimum AAW if not installing lite small SR-SAMs. Tho better to revise the current guidelines to qualify Pilars as frigates FF, while future HDP-2200 to qualify as patrol-frigates PF , while JRCFs and MMCFs be given a different frigate designation
@@mikeeB-m5h per PhN classification, a frigate is able on ASW and AAW. It didn't specify the minimum of ASW, so only having keel sonar and torpedo decoys would be enough (if Pilars have no decoys, they might just have some from JRC's Canto V or at least temporarily; to start, they're expected to have torp launchers. It also didn't specify the minimum of AAW, so VSR-SAMs can be enough (which is doable as future Pilar upgrades). But to note, Vulcan40 can actually also be used as air defense as if a VSR-SAM . Also, iirc antiship missiles are not required. That said, it's lame to downgrade JRCs to corvettes as they already have VSRSAMs, more so when their VLS will finally be installed. JRC displacement also already qualifies as a frigate

Philippines should step up the modernization of the navy especially that external threats are emerging like the South China sea dispute. The government should invest in more capable military assets. Sadly, it looks like they are disregarding this matter and just relying too much to allied countries, especially US, in defending our territories. They overlook the looming threats of a much bigger conflict. We must be self reliant and should have the capability to defend our sovereignty. So I hope the Philippine government gives priority and support to our armed forces in order for them to fulfill their mandate in defending our sovereignty.

The only problem is why all of our capital ships in one place if they focus all their fire power on that area then our navy is done.
Philippines is obsessed with overcentralization as usual
Subic Bay will never be what it was! Spent about teo years there loved it! My favorite bar was the 'U & I" maybe two blocks on the left on Magsaysay Drive down a dark slley way! The A/C worked.... lol something to say in '72
I believe Mr President, Sec Gibo, the Ph must create another Navy base to decentralize. What if the main base is hit. Where do we begin? A plan b is needed and necessary.
It's an open secret that the Philippine Navy is constructing a major naval base in Mactan, Cebu. Although the phase is abysmal.
I believe there are additional naval bases in visayan and mindanao
They have numerous bases, including in davao.
@@tatonoot1950 all of them smaller ones
Ulugan Bay in Palawan is the best location for WPS operations as Spratlys (south WPS) comprise 99% of WPS features, while Luzon Sea (north WPS) only has Scarborough Shoal. To start, deploying major warships in front of Luzon West Coast during hotwar is suicidal due to being very close to China (no amount of defense can stop rain after rain of various cheap munitions), rather Luzon Sea is best for submarines and minor surface vessels, so Subic is best as a major-forward-base for submarines, minor vessels, & air arms. So why is Subic prioritized over Ulugan? Overcentralization as usual. Philippine Govt only see Luzon as the Philippines yet gets angry when central and south tries to separate. The irony - PH Govt acting same as CCP
I suggest to put an air defense to protect this base
It seems like they are planning to move to a better location, more appropriate for larger ships and therefore they will place their defenses there.
We have a very comprehensive air defense setup in the PH all paid for by American taxpayers!! I’d rather our money go to our Allie’s than illegal immigrants any day. Pretty sure we have a couple of THAADS over there and I know we bought a couple versions of the American Iron dome, the same System Israel uses but made my one of their American partners. As far as I know those are the only ones we own, we bought them to trial them and decided to place them in PH. I haven’t heard of any Patriots there but it would surprise me more if we didn’t have any there than if we did. I’d wager we are just getting started as well and wouldn’t be surprised if we had some offensive systems placed there eventually too!!
yep, C-RAM or CIWS at least
Protected yan. Taga Olongapo ako.
May mga modern na equipment na pang detect sa atake both US navy at Philippine navy.
That’s probably defended by alot of confidential air defenses if civilians know every piece of information about bases then it’s concerning.
❤
We need to put an Iron Dome air defense for that naval base.

Why can’t the Philippines install another 4 - ASMs making them 2 - quads instead of 2 - double configuration? All they need to do is redesign and install the steel supports to make the doubles into quads, run additional electrical conduits and connections for the additional missiles and redesign the computer display and alter the computer program at the CMS to launch or secure 8 missiles instead of 4.
Good their they are repurposing the old Hanshin shipyard instead of rotting away unused.
Why do all capital ships concentrated in Subic? It’s easy for China to focus all their missile fires to Subic gulf. Other major ships should be stationed in Palawan.
Obsession to overcentralization
@@watermirror Because Building multiple base is Expensive
@@wyne9145 that's too-low of a reason, a country doesn't have to rich to have multiple ops-level base, PH already has 4. More so since PH is currently building other bases. Even more so with the so-called CADC where more bases are to be built. And even if we go with your reason, Ulugan Bay is more fitting as main ops-level base for WPS than Subic Bay
philippines warship😮😮😮🇺🇸🇺🇸🇵🇭🇵🇭
Nice naval base you got there. Shame it's within range of a bunch of missiles. Bit odd that the Philippine Navy leases its 100 acres from American hedge fund Cerberus. Plus its founder Stephen A. Feinberg is looking for a senior role in the Trump admin. Thanks for the info, Xavier!
It is a temporary location apparently. They plan to move to a more appropriate location as larger ships arrive.
I mean its a good area to launch or accommodate american capital ships , but for me its best to make other operation bases inside, example in Batangas and in cebu
@@tatonoot1950 that plan is still in Subic (as reported) which doesn't answer his first point. The new NOB Subic only solves the lease issue. The leases would've been better spent on developing Ulugan Bay which is way better for WPS operations, while waiting for the new NOB Subic as major-forward-base for submarines, minor surface vessels, and forward airstrip
🇵🇭🇺🇸
we should build more strategic naval base to cover the entire archipelagic domain
I would presume a Spyder System will also be based here to provide protection.

USVs are good but only for and during wartime. Is the Philippines at war right now?
Definitely not
Does the Philippine Navy have USVs right now?
Yes they do.
Does the Philippine Navy have a specific unit for USVs?
Yes they do.
The reason why PN is currently prioritizing conventional vessels is because of the fact it is a good asset during wartime and peacetime operations. Remember that the country is often hit by various typhoons, making it hard to conduct HADR operations, and the acquisition of these assets are one of solutions for such problems.
Currently the WPS is a matter of hull to hull engagement, with both sides trying to avoid raising tensions, so the need of kamikaze USVs right now is not a priority but it is important to consider them, make them, and plan ahead as a bad eventuality of WPS issue arises.

Baguhan kaba dito? This channel never illegal conduct interviews. Your simply stupid to think like that.
why is one del pilar class a PS?
Del Pilar Class always have the hull designation of PS why? It is more of a OPV than a frigate reasons why it never had FF designation.
Moreover, FF designation is for Missile Armed Frigates, hence JRC Class and the upcoming BRP Miguel Malvar Class. Despite the fact the MMCFs are under the Corvette Acquisition Project.

2:49 the officer's answer is too-generic like how a corrupt politician answers a question. That wasn't the first time PhN answered that way and certainly not the last as PhN cannot answer such question sufficiently. That's because he knows Subic is NOT strategic, Subic is only good as ops-base for Luzon Sea which (except Scarborough) is obviously empty yet very-close to Chinese cheap swarming diverse munitions, thus Luzon Sea is only good for submarines and minor surface vessels. He knows Ulugan Bay is the best area for ops-level WPS base as most WPS land features are there and far from China main. It's NOT entirely PhN's fault tho, the govt's overcentralization syndrome is at fault
Why reveal to the public
Why? It's not even a secret. The PN made the ex-US base as their NOB when the Americans left lol, it's no secret. You're simply stupid if you think it that way.
