The Home Assistant local calendar is a good alternative and, starting from the latest Home Assistant version, it's now possible to add events.

Hi Bob, in this video I'm showing you how to configure the local Home Assistant calendar and how to use the service to create new events. Previously you had to use the Google Calendar integration instead.
In a new video I'll introduce how to use automations based on the local calendar events.
