  • Winnifred Beach in Fairy Hill is my favorite beach in Portland, Jamaica. The white sand beach sits in a lush tropical cove with crystal clear water. Most importantly it's a public beach and is open to everyone at no cost. It has a vibe unlike the costly private beaches and gated resorts that tend to be too expensive for local Jamaicans. Locals have been operating small food shacks and selling crafts on the beach for over 30 years. Now the Jamaican Government's UDC ( Urban Development Council ) are trying to take over the beach, expel the local merchants, fence the property and begin charging for entry. On June 11, 2012 the matter is due to be resolved in court. Please watch this video and support the Winnifred Beach Benevolent Society's efforts to " Keep Winnifred Free". DMc

Actually, it's good for the foreigners to keep it public too. Because foreigners like to have the experience of mingling with real local people in a real public setting, as long as it is safe and hassle-free. Winnifred is a place where the locals are mostly respectful and friendly, so it's a good experience for foreigners, an experience they cannot get if it becomes private or exlusive.

The people of Jamaica must find a way to take back what is rightfully yours. If you don't there won't be anything left for your children and their children and so fourth. Don't let them take away what is yours.

Thank goodness it was still a bublic beach when I visit an month ago! The crazy thing is Tourists are the main income for a lot of people in that area and we tourists LOVE the natural vibe and all the wonderful local people we dont want to see resorts and concrete hotels and the forest cut down. Such ignorance on belalf if the UDC is mind-blowing! ALL visitors to Portland need to write to the UDC and let them know to keep thier hands off, too much of Jamica has been ruined already!

You girls are correct. If the beach is gifted to the community the government cannot sell it.

Please stand up and defend this beach, it all about money for the UDC. People first. fight if you got to fight. They did the same to the people of Ocho Rios. Say NO to the UDC.

Foreigners. As you say, most of them save up our money for 6 to 12 months to come and take a vacation…so they really don’t have it. They plan and save to do it. We would like it to remain free as well.

THEY SHOULD NEVER TAKE THE BEACH FROM THE LOCAL PEOPLE. THAT IS NOT RIGHT. IF YOU WALK INTO ANY COUNTRY; THE NATURAL RESOURCES, OF A COUNTRY IS ALWAYS THEIR FOR ITS NATIVE PEOPLE TO ENJOY FIRST, THEN TOURIST. I BELIVED THAT THE TOURIST SHOULD BE THE ONES THAT SHOULD HAVE TO PAY MORE TO ENJOY THE BEACH.
