Mr Schwartz, I can't tell you how much you changed my life, it brings me to tears as I write this. My OCD was so horrible I couldn't think, it ruined my schoolwork, my job, my university and my relationships. I used your knowledge and saved my life from sadness and pain, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Sounds like what he is saying is that the truth will set you free, even from ocd. Tell yourself the truth and believe it and allow it to change your thinking and behaviour.
Bravo! Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz is BRILLIANT. I have been afflicted with OCD most of my 67 years & read Dr. Schwartz’s incredible book ‘The Mind and the Brain’. LIFE CHANGING
Your brain and the rest of your body is a vessel for who you really are, which is your eternal soul. What you do in this life you will take with you, and maybe into your next life.
In 1999 I read his book in a time where NO psychiatrist would have accepted the neurobiology of the brain, when having OCD as he did. His 4 Step Method failed to me, but only few years later i got as one of the first patients in Germany Deep Brain Stimulation on OCD. Beside my brillant neurosurgeon , who was one of the most empathically doctor i ever had, his book showed me the basics and gave me the power to decide for this surgery. Coming from a YBOCS of 40, which is the absolute maximum in OCD, it took some time, but i am 95 % recovered from OCD now since 17 years. Nowadays i have an own website about DBS in OCD to help others. DR. Schwartz was a pioneer in accepting that something biological may be the reason for OCD and part of my decision.
The continuum hypothesis and Kurt Godell incompleteness theorems have proven mathematically that no created system, including science, can answer everything. Naive materialism is proven wrong.

You do not understand the incompleteness theorems or what they prove, my friend. You need to go do a little googling.
It's because of Researchers like Dr Jeffrey, that many people even outside the US, have an understanding of what OCD is, and how a possible training of the brain can be done!! In Hinduism, we have high regard for such people, who brought a new insight or tool, to overcome something very complicated, and consider them as truly blessed and noble souls, who were sent by the Almighty for a particular purpose ( in the given earthly sojourn)
Had the distinct pleasure to speak with Dr. Schwartz at 2005 OCD Conference in San Diego, where he signed my copy of his book “The Mind and the Brain”. Brilliant man, opinion shared by so many. His knowledge & methods are the only truth & help for me. Thanks, Jeffrey.
If the belief of science is that it can answer every question, then it must reduce the totality of everything that can be asked to only that which they can answer in the belief that everything in the universe can be confined to their own understanding. Therefore anything for which it doesn't or cannot have an answer is disregarded as irrelevant as the questions would be irrelevant. If the questions are irrelevant, then these are questions which would not be pursued and eventually never thought of in the first place...
Thank God for the existence of such humans. You can observe him, listen to him and see in his eyes that he is the one saying the truth. He's been struggling for over 4 decades to show us that this is the proper perspective that one should adopt for a healthy Life. Thank you Dr. Schwatz, I am extremely grateful for your existence, otherwise how could we refuse to Believe in those reductionist, deterministic, materialistic perspective. We need people like you Dr. Schwartz, people that stands up straight in face of those groupe(God only knows what their motive are! They want to take the only thing that makes us human!), we need people like you to stand up, articulâtes things properly and shed the light on what is the healthiest path and who we truly are! Thank you, thank you and a 1000 thank you!
Excellent points in this video. The mind can reshape the brain and the brain does effect the mind yet the mind is capable of shutting off the brain when the impulses of the brain aren't acceptable to the mind.
I think he is making a good point about science, it is a tool rather than an answer to everything. That makes science very important, but it provides no guarantee to be the universal solution. Once the heart stops of a vehicle accident victim, science ceases to be anything. It cannot then be the answer.
These points remind me of the fact that some motorcycle riders brains do not want the rider to wear a helmet which is designed mainly to protect the brain .
One must have GREAT FAITH(far more than any other religious person on the planet) to believe science can and will answer everything. And here is some sad news for the materialistic atheist. Once science answers everything, even science itself will become a science stopper. The point is, there's always an inevitable end to the materialistic way of thinking. I do admire the GREAT FAITH the materialistic atheist have even though they never ponder it themselves.
Where in a biological, electrical system which is essentially life, does a thought exist. It become even more complicated when we talk about thinking, Imagination and memory. De these things exist within the cells. I don't think so. All of these things exist in our Spiritual Self separate and distinct from the brain.
The problem is that people with ocd often think that checking something or redoing something is a safety measure. So that people with ocd don't want to do this, as that would make them feel like they're unsafe. Any suggestions to this problem?
What part of the brain activates when you are in this impartial observer/mindfulness mode? What are the differences between that and regular mode in brain? How does it affect neuroplasticity and creation of new gray matter?
I don’t separate science and the spiritual. I think we just don’t know the science yet that could explain our mind, miracles, spiritual beings, multidimensions. That knowledge just may be eternal like God, never completely knowable, like infinity- we can forever discover more.
i don t think we are just matter, and we are robots. i think there is an element of free will, and a soul, or a consioussness. i think that makes sense. we can make certain decisions. also, if we make bad decisions, or criminal desicions, why do we have jails? also, science is suppose to be the end all and be all of all things. i don t agree. philosophy is important for a reason. etc.]
Jeffrey, do you know anyone who has worked at Paxton Patterson? I worked with a guy there who sounds EXACTLY like you. Same voice, same verbal patterns, enunciations, etc.
With the difficulty of making a top without a bottom or an in without an out, is the striatum's downside inclusive of all the bad habits a person would have? If so, can we hear more in that regard?
"Those who believe that it is wrong, always and everywhere, to believe anything on insufficent evidence believe that very proposition on insufficient evidence, indeed on no evidence at all." - atheist philosopher William Vallicella
Problem with me and ocd is people say things to trigger it and it makes me have bad obssessions and its hard to move on to the next behaviour i get stuck on the thing someone says and question whats true and whats not true over some dum thing someone says
Good talk, but beating around the bush for 25 minutes. One word is enough - God. We all have an inner divine spark that was implemented in us by God. Once you realize that, your life becomes empowered and it is very liberating.
He would be more clear if he was explaining The God Breathed Words called the scriptures. A person lives in each body, God also gave us a conscience, etc.
Seriously , I am a theist, duelist etc but i am still trying to understand how can our brain tell us anything if it’s now the real you? How can it send the message “ your hands are dirty you must wash them” that the real you must interpret or reinterpret whatever the case may be???
Switching behaviors has been the hardest thing i have ever done it actually feels impossible at times and it seems the harder i try to switch behaviors the harder the thoughts hit me
Because these things have been tested and brain activity can be localized.. you should check out Micheal Egnor he does a great job explaining it but many things like using logic ,mathematics and intentionality can not be localized physically or manipulated physically..because they are not part of the brain
complete BS. if you could truly increase intelligence it would be a revolution for human progress. if you can accept that there's talent in sports, best believe there is one in being smart.
But our thoughts and how we behave is pretty much robotic. We are beings that are forced to live in a world where everything essentially is information. We can only exist in the ranges of this information. Every "decision" is based on your previous life experiences. We don't consciously think. Thoughts just arise out of nowhere and can only work with the previous gathered information. If you start to investigate your thoughts you will realize what i mean. And there will be sort of a dissociation between "you" and your thoughts which is very strange. But again we are beings that are forced to exist in a world where everything is information. We are a part of everything and came out of everything, we are a happening , we don't really do the happening. Something that is existing will always underlie certain boundaries. There for we are not free. The word free is completely misleading anyways. How does it come that not everyone is born with the same potential? why are some people less creative than others? why are some people "smarter"? People sort of get born with boundaries to their being. One self has not chosen the environment hes born in. Environment definitely shapes our being. According to some spiritual teachings we are not our thoughts. We are the awareness behind our thoughts. But we certainly do need thoughts to operate in this world and to do something meaningful. Or is life about siting under a tree meditating 24/7 and depriving your self from every pleasure life has to offer, cause it essentially will lead to suffering. I guess it takes a whole new level to realize the unconscious patterns and programs your mind obtained over the years and we certainly do have the ability, but this ability, again arises from the previous life happenings which we barely had any influence what so ever about. Life is weird, especially as a human being and i dont really understand anything at all the more i hear, read or see. Im just more confused on a higher level. But life feels robotic to me, correct me if im wrong.
Yes!! Science Worshippers! And it IS a Religion! So does he mention the word God at the end? Been listening a long time, I think I’m near the end now, but I’ve been thinking, really smart guy but if you don’t mention God you’re kind of missing the clear thing all that research is pointing to?? I’ll wait for the last 10 minutes hopefully he mentions it but he’s taking forever to get to the real point!
Mr Schwartz, I can't tell you how much you changed my life, it brings me to tears as I write this. Which subtype(s) of OCD you suffer?
Sounds like what he is saying is that the truth will set you free, even from ocd. Tell yourself the truth and believe it and allow it to change your thinking and behaviour.
Help sir OCD tips me plese
Materialism is dead now.
A true genius who changed lives .. his book Brain lock is a MUST read !
Bravo! Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz is BRILLIANT. I have been afflicted with OCD most of my 67 years & read Dr. Schwartz’s incredible book ‘The Mind and the Brain’. LIFE CHANGING
I have OCD, and holy cow - this video just made me realize that resisting OCD symptoms can support the idea of "free won't."
It's your soul. St. Thomas Aquinas said that the body adjusts itself to the operations of the soul.
Your brain and the rest of your body is a vessel for who you really are, which is your eternal soul.
What you do in this life you will take with you, and maybe into your next life.
Praise God ! Thank you Dr. Jeffrey M Schwartz !

Brain = material remote receiver
Energy mind consciousness spirit = transmitter driver operator.

His book has helped me so much when my ocd first raged. And I am rereading again because my ocd came back and listening to him
Has helped me alot.
Dear Prof. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless 🙏🙏
Absolutely brilliant talk!
Thank you for posting

Science as a religion? I've known and said that for decades. The only ones who don't see it are those who don't want to.
Excellent points in this video. The mind can reshape the brain and the brain does effect the mind yet the mind is capable of shutting off the brain when the impulses of the brain aren't acceptable to the mind.

Don't overrate the scientist. Science (Knowledge) transcends the scientist.
Love this guy
Brilliant...Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the video.
very good stuff but the camera work is making me seasick ( circa 3:30 )
Great content but the extreme shaky cam is making this guy look insane visually.
Thank you for sharing!

Our brain maintains all sanity. Thinking is my best friend.
Great man God bless you.

If science could reproduce creativity, or talent, we could have a multitude of Einstein's. Einstein.

Great video. 😊
Can someone please give me information related to autoimmune disorders of the basal ganglia? Physicians refuse to believe that this occurs

Is there a way for depression anxiety ?
With the difficulty of making a top without a bottom or an in without an out, is the striatum's downside inclusive of all the bad habits a person would have? If so, can we hear more in that regard?
"Who are YOU?"
*"Batman!"*
.
Why is there no reply’s to any of the questions? Seems fishy.
Camera person: Get a tripod.
Very informative video

Great input! It seems Dr.Jeffrey Schwartz's personal website is hacked.
The "how", can't be known. So, you can't even get to the "why".

“Science worshippers” brilliant.
Awesome scientist
The brain making choices on what to focus on is just another aspect of the brain. Why couldnt the Wise Advocate is just another function of the brain?
Because these things have been tested and brain activity can be localized.. you should check out
Micheal Egnor he does a great job explaining it but many things like using logic ,mathematics and intentionality can not be localized physically or manipulated physically..because they are not part of the brain
Permutation and combination of the billions of cells think of that
im getting dizzy from that annoying camera movement
