Everyone loves to praise Max's escape from Vecna and I feel like not enough talk about the lead up. The entirety of Dear Billy was really well done, making you dread Max's eventual Vecna attack. I was pretty sure the wouldn't kill her but I couldn't be sure.
Dear billy and episode 9 (I don’t remember the title) were my favourite, I feel like they both so well done obviously the entire season was beautifully done but those to episode were incredible and truly emotional heart breaking
While I do get the whole "The Russia storyline undercuts Hopper's season 3 "death" argument. I don't really like it. The thing that I love about Stranger Things is that the Duffers really get and understand "emotional stakes and consequences". While I do think a good death can up the stakes. Death shouldn't be the go to plot to push a story or the characters forward. The other thing is, when you kill off a character their story is done. Their arc is over and we have to look at what that arc represents. If Hopper died in season 3. He would have been a guy who tried, lost his daughter, lost his wife (cause she left him). Became a alcoholic who then eventually found a family again, then progresses to being a bit of a jerk, only to sacrifice himself for them. Heroic yes. Fitting?...no. It makes him just a plot device who's only existence is there to save the characters and later fuel their emotional development. All the arguments about season 3 being the perfect end to his arc (including yours) all see it from the POV of the other characters...not from the POV of Hopper. Whereas the previous seasons have been quietly building up to the Russia story really well. Because the closed off nature, it's isolation. The loneliness, the physical pain. It all represents how Hopper himself has felt most of his life. In season 1 Hopper said that he is cursed. If his story arc ended in 3 we would not understand why. Even 2 hints at his backstory with a folder on the Vietnam war. Then there is his personality. Season 1, we get a pretty good picture on how broken he is. Season 2 and 3 is about him trying to repair his life and move on with this new family he has, but there are road blocks. He cannot move forward because he hasn't dealt with his past. His fears and insecurities. Those insecurities start to mount in season 2 and reach a boiling point in season 3. Now in 4, all the bravado is stripped away from him. He can no longer hide in being "Hopper". He has to face his demons on being a curse and what that really means. How much he is living with this guilt that he feels he was responsible for Sarah's death. This season not only rounds out Hopper's character, but it digs deep into why he was such a possessive jack ass in season 3. He was absolutely terrified that his new family would be taken from him or that they would leave. Season 4 goes further than 3 which is about Hopper wanting the best for his new family and a happy ending for them. It's about the desire for the best outcome for him and that he too is worth so much more than being a sacrificial lamb, and can do so much more. That all his struggles to this point, they mattered, and that even in our worst moments when all hope seems lost. We can move forward and renew ourselves. It's one of my favourite storylines of the season.
Wow, I was actually unhappy with Hopper not being dead but I never though about all these things you presented. I still somewhat agree that when you bring a character back from the dead you are not going to see them dying right off the bat, so it does take away that (at least for season 4) but everything else you presented was genius. Kudos to you, you managed to make me like his arc even more.
in-depth Stranger Things content like yours is what I need more of! Your analysis of why Steve is the best character was FANTASTIC! There is such of dearth of insightful fan-based ST content, yours was like an oasis in a desert. Please make more!
Max is my favorite character followed by Dustin & Steve. So imagine my anxiety this season! Dustin's grief at the end for Eddie (who really grew on me), Max's terrible outcome... I think she may be brain dead which sucks because they killed her.. brought her back... to do what...? Lie in a coma?! but we've seen stranger things budumtss. Idk man S4 really tugged on my heart strings man
Loved your take on the Hopper's death. I'm one who was greatly impact by Hopper's death in season 3, I cried for like 30 min after it ended, and completely agree with you on how invulnerable it made his character. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about Volume 2 & Max. As well as Eddie.
i agree with eddie. at first i was kind of dismissing him, but with his interaction with grace i saw him as likeable and really enjoyed him from then on. he is definitely one of my fave characters this season.
Other then the fact that I would love more screen time for every character just hanging out doing daily things besides saving the world, I love this show. I don't like to watch shows with episodes over 20-30 min, but in this show the time flies. Lowkey hope there will be another season, and would love to be an extra or a main/side character (specifically Steve Harrington's girlfriend lmao)
Definitely agree on that last line lol! In my opinion Steve deserves someone who would choose him without doubt, unlike Nancy who seems to be really torn between Jonathan and Steve at the end of S4.
great review and I agree with most things but I think that the California plot is the weakest as besides the gunfight Jonathon and Argial or however you spell his name are very boring and don't matter. Mike and El are also in my opinion terrible as El's whole "being bullied" plot is so dumb and annoying. Mike just doesn't have much memorable moments at all. Will also just seems very winy and never stands up for El. I think that although the Hopper plot is a little pointless, while watching the show I saw it as a good fun break from the boring plots such as the California plot or the Eleven plot which in the beginning of the season were boring and the Eleven plot was terrible until probably the last 2 episodes. But that's just my opinion.
I would start to get a little tiered of the Russia Stuff™ and realize "hey it's been a while since we've seen what Mike and Will and Jonathon are up to..." and then we'd fiiiiinally see them and it was like "more drugs and getting lost" and I was like OH.
Great job! This video and your other Stranger things one is awesome!! These are my thoughts on the season too. Going in after s3, I didn't expect much from it, but it's actually one of my favorites so far. Can't believe your channel isn't more popular!
I definitely see how the foreshadowing of Hopper still being alive kind of killed the suspense, but letting him live was one of the best decisions of the whole series‘ plot in my opinion. We get to explore this whole other world in gulag Russia and see this extreme survival side of Hopper that I imagine he must have picked up in the Vietnam War. In Hawkins, Hopper was more like a slightly overweight sheriff with anger issues, but in Russia we see this serious, pensive and extremely resilient side of him that would never give up. The character development to his character is quite substantial.
Here I thought I was the only one who saw the similarities with the Scooby Doo gang. Nice video and glad that the UA-cam algorithm recommended your videos for Steve Harington being the best character. Keep it up!
The Jamie love in the entire breakdown video has my heart..... He is absolutely absolutely phenomenal in the season and that credit scene was so satisfying to watch...... 😄😄
Came here after your Steve video got recommended to me and I must say, man, your way of reviewing is so good!!! It's so well explained and it flows really well throughout the video!! I'm really curious about your thoughts on Vol 2, as it seems this video was published before it was released. Thank you for the insights!! Stranger Things has so many stuff to talk about and i feel like you made good use of it in a way that made perfect sense.
i still think it could have ended after season 1. it was really the only one that got me reallu hooked and made me scared, unlike any of the other 3 seasons. i still like that we got more, otherwise how would i get to love steve, hopper and even max so much? every season has good stuff, it’s just that i really miss the tone of the first season, with its tense mystery and everything. stranger things should have ended after season 1, but i am kinda glad we got more.
i thought season 4 had too many plot holes and things that just didn’t make sense. weather they were small or relatively big, they just took me out of the experience. there were many things that i did love, like the “vibes”. but the “mystery” stuff just fell a little flat in some aspects. i found many things just didn’t quite make sense. and some of the reveals while very “cool” just weren’t the best when you think of how it could go. steve is still amazing and i’m glad that that’s not changed
I maintain Eleven did nothing wrong. You cant just choreograph an entire bully ring in a public roller rink just to make someone unhappy at their peak after bullying them relentlessly already, you're bound for a broken nose. Roller skate was mayyybe a little overkill.
roller skate was perfectly fine. the only overkill aspect to it is that El would then be in a lot of trouble in real life. However if she could get away with the Roller Skate attack then it's perfectly fine.
Yeeeah I didn't think about how Eleven totally went overkill with the Roll stake....a punch would have been more than appropriate lol but I do see your reasoning that she was done faaar worse to people when she was wayy younger. I totally agree with you how bringing Hopper back was kinda a mistake and cheapens his loss and the letter El reads at the end of season 3. His death was heartwrenching and meaningful and how they totally took a back step on that and explained how he uh...."just got outta the way...!" Doesn't really make a whole lot of sense when other people were clearly vaporized by the rays a few episodes before. It's nice seeing him back but yeah, I agree with you. Sadie totally killed it this season and made me really like her as character something that the other seasons failed to do and the Running Up That Hill scene will forever live rent free in my head. How the music just flares up as she remembers all her happy memories and how fights back and literally runs for life, just gorgeous and easily one of the best scenes in Vol . 1 🙌🏻 I like how in depth you go into yours videos, new to your channel but definitely sticking around. I apologize in advance for the length of my comments lol.
no, a punch isn't enough, the rollerblades were very appropriate and would provide just the right level of shock to change that bully's entire outlook.
Personally I think the Russian part of the show is my second or third favorite my only disappointment is the part where they fight the demogorgon it felt rushed
3:17 The reason why the Duffer Brothers had to show the reveal of Hopper being alive is because Noah Schnapp (the actor of Will) accidentally revealed that Hopper is still alive. He tries to shrug it off as a joke and said that he was kidding but it wasn't heard cuz of the fans freaking out. I don't know if it was an interview or just a fan meet-up, cuz I couldn't really tell from the videos years ago. But yea, that was the reason why they revealed Hopper being alive in the promotional videos since it sounded like there was a lot of people in the video. Altho, in the video, it sounded like he was saying or about to say "Hopper has a really good story" which doesn't sound like or mean that he was alive, but yk, people can just assume things quite quickly so, yea Here's the video from what I was talking about ua-cam.com/video/8kJ-KJilfGM/v-deo.html
The only thing I dislike about Stranger Things is the whole Russia storyline. It's not only because I am from Russia myself but you know it's just so fucking cringy to watch because it lacks believability. I strongly believe that was a huge mistake to add commies as the villain in 3rd season. It was as if showed switched the genre to some impersonation comedy idk. I really wish Hopper had died in season 3 because the whole useless Russian part of the story in season 4 could've been removed from the script. Other than that i really enjoyed 4th season and consider it even better than 1st.
In the 80s there was a massive thing of U.S. and its media fearing the Russians. Since this show is all about nostalgia from those sources, it makes sense that way. Additionally, don't forget that different factions of the U.S. government are also villains (That said, I'm not from the U.S., I'm from Latin America), and both "Papa" and the Russians are trying to study the upside down for control over it (kind of like what happened with the space race and the nuclear race).
I'm sorry but WIll possibly being gay is actually kinda stupid and undercuts the importance of guys being friends. Will has felt abandoned and left out ever since he disappeared. He's been the pariah, the harbinger of doom, the lonely quiet kid. And to feel like your friends all moved on and have a hard time adjusting to that is totally normal. Will isolates himself from everyone except for his best friends... But the best friends he had all got girlfriends (even Dustin). They started leaving him out (or maybe he started leaving himself out too) and started looking at him differently. Will is just sad and lonely and misses his best friend is already compelling because anyone who has ever felt forgotten or unimportant or overlooked can relate to it.
THANK YOU!!!!!!! im getting so sick of every show thats has male friends who have a deep connection, the writers always try to make one of them gay that loves the friend and its so annoying because it undercuts the importance of guys being friends like you said. It's also extremely cliche and becoming cringy now.
I know you guys are upset that there are gay characters in shows and that every show does this but they have been teasing this since season 1. Hell, one of the main plot points in season 1 was that the town believed Will was hate crimed for being gay. Also looking at the sounds choices, the outfits, the lighting and lines from other characters (mikes father and the town) it is clear that the writers have planned both Will and Mike to be gay from the start. If you need more evidence i can gladly send a video
I disagree with you when you said angela didn't deserve to be hit with the rollerskate. I think she deserved worse than that. While physical pain is worser at the moment it happens it goes away rather quickly. While mental pain stays with the person forever and keeps growing. So let's do an example and say el hitting angela with the rollerskate is a 10 while angela bullying el is 1/4. At first glance what el did was worse but, the pain from the rollerskate quickly starts going away while the pain from the bullying rises every once in a while. So el's pain over the course of 6 months to a year will be a 11 or higher while angela's will remain a 10. However el's pain will continue rising until she dies eventually being far worse than angela's. Which means what angela did is worser.
I understand where you are coming from but there were a few scenes in season 4 that for me really just ripped the show in half. Scenes such as vecna being the mind flayer just really made me hate it. Season 3 in my opinion is the greatest.
OH THANK YOU , i had my various nitpicks this season , ( Robin acting weird , Vecna feeling like a Scooby Doo villan , Mike’ group having really uninteresting adventures compared to the rest , the bats look like the most generic movie monsters ever ,etc )but i still loved it …but that moment with vecna just broke me Like wtf , this is the stupidest nonsence imaginable On a logical level : a dude just kind of takes control of this powerfull interdimensional hivemind …just like that (after encoutering one of it’s murder machine monsters , that for some reason doesn’t eradicate him instantly) But on a theoretical level : you have an awesome , mysterious , unique and intimidating villan , and after 3 sesons , you replace him with generic looking zombi guy , I wrote down an entire page of logical problems this creates , and it just killed the finale for me
In my opinion I think the mind flayed is actually using Vecna, kind of like a vessel, or maybe prophet even; it was around seemingly long before One. As they said in the beginning, Vecna is a *general* and a conduit/tool to the mind flayer. It took the spider shape probably because One was the only intelligent life it could mold any sort of identity out of, and also of a different realm full of potential food.
wait what???? I thought Vecna worked FOR the mind flayer like the kids said earlier in the season. you mean they made venca also be the mind flayer. WTF???? that just ruins the story for me.
0:53 these are only numbers for May 23 - May 29 2022. You can see that if you search for the uncropped picture. Even tho very successful, it's premiere still stays behind Squid Game. I mean even looking at the other shows the picture just doesn't make sense.
I think stranger things 4 might be my favorite season but the one thing that takes it down a notch is Will, Mike, & Jonathan's role. It wasn't that massive when they're some of the first 2 seasons characters pushed to the side. Hopefully they have more to do in Season 5 because I heard that Will, will be a main role in the season!!
I don’t get how everyone says the Russia plot line is the worse. Clearly it’s the California plotline. Russia, you have Murray and Enzo and Hopper and Yuri and also Joyce I guess but she feels really out of place. California, you have Mike (to me at least, the most personality-less and boring character) Will, who is just boring here and has been for the past two seasons, Johnathan and Argyle, who admittedly, their weed scenes in earlier episodes are funny, Johnathan feels worthless here and Argyle can’t carry this plotline as much as she tries.
shocked you only have 5k subscribers, youre videos literally demand attention because you dont just gush about characters or talk about screenwriting by acting smart you just say "steve is best boy, heres why" and actually are aware that the showrunners meant for that to be the way it is. just came from your steve video and here to binge the rest.
I have very mixed feelings on season 4. I really enjoyed it. Let’s get that out of the way first and to be honest it probably is my favorite season but it does have some flaws. Every season they add new characters. Which makes sense but now in season four I feel like there are too many characters. Sometimes it feels like there’s too much going on at once. There are characters that didn’t even need to be added and have no reason for being there Argyle. I am so confused why he is In the story. He’s not funny and he had nothing to the plot. You could remove him and almost nothing would change. Vecna he’s a pretty nothing villain. He’s just another dark evil force overlord with no personality. Which is fine. Stranger Things is definitely the show to have that type of villain but it still doesn’t make him interesting. Not to mention his motivation is pretty stupid. There are a lot of continuity errors in the season and things I don’t really make sense. I already knew hopper wasn’t dead because I knew the show didn’t have the balls to kill him but I feel like him being alive kind of on does the emotional ending of season 3. Honestly though I’m pretty worried about season 5. Season five is supposed to be the last season but I’m kind of worried. Every season all the problems I listed have progressively gotten worse. I just feel like season five could be the breaking point. If they add any more new characters I swear to God I’m gonna kill someone! The ending of season four honestly just made me feel nothing. I wanted this to be the last season. I’m just worried about season 5. Again overall I did really like the season but it does have problems that should not be ignored
I agree with you on this With the first 3 seasons i felt like they were only getting better , naturally expanding the characters , story , and SF element , but this time , the clock seems to have a few loose screws
why do you make such a big deal about Eleven hitting the bully in the head with a blunt object????? the bully deserved it 100% I hate how people like you minimize the effects bullying have, especially when you condemn acts of physical retaliation. it's down right insulting.

I genuinely thought she was gonna die

woah youre right
How was he an asshole in season 3?
Eddie was a plot device for the first 5 episodes but episode 6 through 9, he became one of the top 3 characters of the season.
I hope that we get a Robin and Will interaction in S5, he needs a buddy, especially someone lgbtq to help him out with his sexuality
That would be great. It doesn't even have to be explicit, just scenes of them hanging out.
I’ve been thinking the same thing
Yeah overall more screentime and character development to will

I actually like argyle. I think in season five he will be more serious, scared and traumatised. Probably have a sad past
Hopefully!
pineapple pizza might have killed his family and turned him to the Darkside and made argyle his apprentice.
Argyle isn’t in sz5 :/
Loved your take on the Hopper's death. I'm one who was greatly impact by Hopper's death in season 3, I cried for like 30 min after it ended, and completely agree with you on how invulnerable it made his character. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about Volume 2 & Max. As well as Eddie.

Exactly, people making such an issue out of it really gets on my nerves.

Brilliant video, you just earned a sub!
Looking forward to your volume 2 breakdown, subbed. 💯😃
Great content bro def deserve more subs
What made you think she was going to murder them. I doubt that. She would have thrown them backwards or something, she's not evil
Absolutely love your vids👑
I Fell bad for will
The lil Shrek clip for the layers reference 👏😄
Great videooooo!
It's weak that they didn't commit to killing Max.
You're spot on that they shouldn't have revealed that Hopper was still alive until the season actually came out
Make more! Make more! You are my fav ST reviewer!
Come on its so obvious that hes gayy
If you need more evidence i can gladly send a video
great vid, can u link the running up that hill you used for the hawkins intro?
Glad you enjoyed the video! This is the version of the song that I used

i wish the stranger things formula prioritized consistent character arcs and motivations between seasons
awesome video! ! i would love to hear your opinions on Vol2!!
Which means what angela did is worser.
i want robin and will to become buddies. EVERYONE knows gays walk in groups, that’s just a natural thing.
That was NOT Freddy Kreuger. That was WILLY the lizard alien.
I understand where you are coming from but there were a few scenes in season 4 that for me really just ripped the show in half. Scenes such as vecna being the mind flayer just really made me hate it. Season 3 in my opinion is the greatest.
OH THANK YOU , i had my various nitpicks this season , ( Robin acting weird , Vecna feeling like a Scooby Doo villan , Mike’ group having really uninteresting adventures compared to the rest , the bats look like the most generic movie monsters ever ,etc )but i still loved it …but that moment with vecna just broke me
Like wtf , this is the stupidest nonsence imaginable
On a logical level : a dude just kind of takes control of this powerfull interdimensional hivemind …just like that (after encoutering one of it’s murder machine monsters , that for some reason doesn’t eradicate him instantly)
But on a theoretical level : you have an awesome , mysterious , unique and intimidating villan , and after 3 sesons , you replace him with generic looking zombi guy ,
I wrote down an entire page of logical problems this creates , and it just killed the finale for me
In my opinion I think the mind flayed is actually using Vecna, kind of like a vessel, or maybe prophet even; it was around seemingly long before One.
14:34 wait they shot it with a fucking phone?
You are underated
Vecna looks like the grinch change my mind
I think stranger things 4 might be my favorite season but the one thing that takes it down a notch is Will, Mike, & Jonathan's role. It wasn't that massive when they're some of the first 2 seasons characters pushed to the side. Hopefully they have more to do in Season 5 because I heard that Will, will be a main role in the season!!
im pretty sure it was a mistake in writing with the whole wills birthday thing but its still sad to think about
I thought nobody else noticed the D&D thing💀💀
I don’t get how everyone says the Russia plot line is the worse. Clearly it’s the California plotline. Russia, you have Murray and Enzo and Hopper and Yuri and also Joyce I guess but she feels really out of place. California, you have Mike (to me at least, the most personality-less and boring character) Will, who is just boring here and has been for the past two seasons, Johnathan and Argyle, who admittedly, their weed scenes in earlier episodes are funny, Johnathan feels worthless here and Argyle can’t carry this plotline as much as she tries.
Great indepth videos! Moreeeee
shocked you only have 5k subscribers, youre videos literally demand attention because you dont just gush about characters or talk about screenwriting by acting smart you just say "steve is best boy, heres why" and actually are aware that the showrunners meant for that to be the way it is. just came from your steve video and here to binge the rest.

If steve or eddie die the duffers better count their days
Ok
I agree with you on this
With the first 3 seasons i felt like they were only getting better , naturally expanding the characters , story , and SF element , but this time , the clock seems to have a few loose screws
why do you make such a big deal about Eleven hitting the bully in the head with a blunt object????? the bully deserved it 100% I hate how people like you minimize the effects bullying have, especially when you condemn acts of physical retaliation. it's down right insulting.
How can this have 13k views and your other video has 1.3m views haha. UA-cam giveth and UA-cam taketh away.
am i the only who one thinks this is the worst
I actually think season 2 is the best season
its def underrated and where the show should have ended imo
