Wanted to post an update on the dry out issue. I have since swapped in a Lamy 14k nib, and the nib now stays ready to write after sitting capped for 3+ weeks. However the ink in the converter does begin the dry out. So I believe the cap seal is still an issue.

Agreed on nib dry out, the only major defect to an otherwise decent pen 😮‍💨

I have a Jinhao 80 in black and silver with a Lamy 1.1 nib.
I use Lamy Turquoise bottled ink and it never dries out.
I have had mine for a year now and it's my daily carry that I love.

Great to hear, I haven’t tried swapping in a Lamy nib. May have to try

I was really lucky with this one. This is the best of my 5 Jinhaos

    Thanks for your content!
Great discovery that you pointed out the poor cap sealing! Unfortunately, i had a poor experience. Bought 2 of these, and they were both hard starters.
I tried flossing with brass sheets, mild nib tuning, and nothing worked. Wondering if it's the feed and not the nib. Or the cap sealing?

I’m sorry to hear that! This is the 3rd Jinhao 80 that I’ve owned and the others tended to be dry writers but still wrote. The biggest issue I’ve come across is dry out after being capped for a little over a week. Nib tuning at this price range is certainly fair game. I wonder if your nib is aligned and fully seated on the feed. You may also want to check that the converter is fully installed and ink isn’t clinging to the walls. Lastly ink and paper selection can make a big difference.

Great as always. I do have one criticism of your great channel. Its always about new pens and its the last time we see them, We don't know what you like over time. It would be nice to see you do a (currently inked or pens in use ) segment so that we know over time what pens stand the test of time and what doesn't. What you keep going back to and what vanishes over time. Again this is a gem of a channel.

Thank you for the kind words, and for the recommendations! I’ve been toying with the idea of doing other formats, maybe it will be a New Year’s resolution 😁

Excellent review. There is one question I have. Will it take a Lamy or international cartridge?
As it uses Lamy nibs, it is an excellent alternative to the triangular grips from Lamy and there is a wide selection of nibs available.

Thank you! It does seem to fit Lamy standard cartridges

I fell out of love with fountain pens and find penmanship practice much more fulfilling.

Do you use dip pens mostly, or do you mean you aren’t collecting as much anymore?

@@fortheloveofpens I practice Spencerian, Ornamental Penmanship and Italic with dip pens. I use my FPs to write plain cursive sometimes. I used to buy a fancy holder and nibs, too. Now I just practice, it's more fulfilling for me. I learned everything I want to learn about FP already. Gone are the days of just buying FP and dip pens.

@@gordonhall9943 I’ve started to study some on penmanship, it’s a rabbit hole I’m considering going down. Glad you found fulfillment in it! Personally I find a lot to love in the variety, design and engineering of fountain pens 😁

I do prefer the Lamy 2000, but this is an economical alternative. It's good to see they did not copy Lamy exactly!!!!

I had changed nib to a Lamy steel one and this makes it a great pen

The Jinhao 80 is a nice pen, but Jinhao's quality can vary greatly between pens of the same model. I have three, black with black trim and nib, a blue one and a red one each with gold trim and nib. For some reason, no matter what I do the blue one has poor flow (almost non-existent.) The red and black work great.
I look at the Jinhao pens as being targeted at people who can't afford the real thing, but want the looks of the real thing.

QC at this price point can certainly be an issue. I’ve had a few Jinhao 80s, and sold off the first few I bought because they wouldn’t write consistently. But I ended up missing having the Lamy 2000 appearance in other colors, and ended up buying this one. I mention the dry out issue in this review as well. At this price I feel comfortable tuning nibs since it is low risk. Also you do have the option to swap in authentic Lamy nibs too.

Weak point is the clip in my opinion, other than that great affordable pen.

What do you not like about the clip? To me it’s pretty similar to the Lamy 2000, but a little stiffer.

It baffles me how an $8 pen can be compared to a LAMY 2000.
