That were thousands of the 3 cyl Fords in the SE US and many are still working. The 3 cyl engine had a unique sound, and was very economical to run and maintain. It does not require the cost of additional balancing like a 4 cyl engine. There are a number of great videos on this platform that will explain engine balancing if you are interested.
The 4000 has power steering and a remote valve and with a little love and a few dollars would make a great utility tractor for someone.

Dad had a 1966 4000 gas with the split grille like that one, the newer models had the one piece grille. That tractor looks very similar if not identical to ours. Our experience was that it was a good dependable tractor and from what I've read and heard that's the general reputation of those old 2000-3000-4000 3 cyl Fords.

Odd-number cylinder engines are usually naturally balanced. My guess is that the crank is not a flat plane crank but a triangle looking from the end. Wish it would follow me home.

Speaking of the 3 vs 4 cylinder engines, when I was a youngster Dad baled all the hay with a small square New Holland Hayliner. We ran Massey Ferguson 35 with a 3 cyl Perkins and a 65 with a 4cyl Perkins. the 35 was smoother to operate with less vibration however when running the baler with the 35 if the hay started to dampen slightly the 3 cyl would start to break the baler flywheel shear bolt, if this began to happen more frequently we would put the 4 cyl on the baler in the same conditions and would not break any shear bolts. Even though the operator could feel the vibration on the 4 cyl there must have been some resonance down the 3 cyl PTO shaft which caused the problem. It was something that was discussed from time to time but nothing ever really looked at!

We had several Fords over the years. They have been good to us. I had a Ford 4000 but Diesel like that tractor. It was a good machine but the 3 cylinder Diesel is a little noisy. I prefer the Perkins in our MF 165 Diesel. Your right about the 4 cylinders not being as well balanced but they are quieter and seem to have more power. I know the Perkins in my MF 255 was supposed to be better balanced. I could not tell much difference between the two.

Ross, usually the dipstick for trans/hydraulic on Fords is left side below the seat. Almost down on the foot rest just in front of the axle housing. Many models Ford did go back to the plug style, that is if my memory is serving me correctly. Cheers :)

    • @rosstheoliverman
