  • Ice Cube Experiment. What happens? Ice floating over vegetable oil but it decreases in baby oil.
    While the ice melts, water is reduced in both liquids. Implemented gas grows and melt water falls. Then the boundary between the melted water and oil shows a beautiful light effect. It shines like a gold (the principle of internal rejection).
    The last session shows a small part of the ice cube, which goes up and down. Of course, you can try this at home.

    The structure of ice is less dense than water (and traps air), so it floats in the oil instead of sinking like water. Water flows down the ice cube from it's entire surface to form a droplet that pulls it down until the droplet falls off. It also loses buoyancy as the ice barrier melts, allowing the air bubbles to escape like at 1:14 when it sinks dramatically. So even if losing water drops makes it rise, it will lose air to sink back down.

    The ending is so sad. I thought the little ice cube might actually make it up ;_;

    You guys should do some experiments with Very-high-density amorphous ice, or with the highest density ice you can create. I want to see if it is possible to make ice sink in water.

    Is it because the oil floats on top of the water while the ice floats on top of the oil?

    Is this real heavy water (deuterium oxide) or you just wanted to call it that because of the higher density?
