  • In the lead-up to the 1980s, Ronald Reagan became convinced of the growing threat of "mutual assured destruction" in the Cold War. As a result, as U.S. president he decided to take Soviet policy under his own control within the White House. Over his eight years in power, he succeeded in persuading the USSR to reduce its nuclear arsenal, to end the Cold War and ultimately allow the dismantling of the Soviet Union. Now, as present-day Taiwan faces an existential threat from an opponent more powerful than the former USSR, Taiwan’s new president is taking charge of three new committees, including one on "whole-of-society" civil defense. How is that committee connected to recent incidents of Chinese equipment found on Taiwan's military bases and also to a Chinese vessel manned by an ex-PLA Navy captain that found its way near to Port of Taipei?

    - Retired U.S. Air Force foreign area officer specializing in counterterrorism, irregular warfare and missile defense

    Yes, Taiwan is very porous re-security. Much of the population are in denial about what the CCP are capable of, and the brutality of their record and intent. Many seem loath to get organized for Taiwan’s defense.

    As an American 'China Watcher,' it's kind of crazy that my government is guaranteeing Taiwan but the Taiwanese don't seem to have thought about China invading at all. For what it is worth, I'm not anti-China but support Taiwan.

      Indonesia has many 17,000 islands and many languages . If these many parts were behaving like taiwanese back then..we could see forever civil wars for independence probably till today. Luckily, 1928 long before Indonesia was formed as a "new " country in 1945 those many parts of Indonesia decided to become as one nation, one language and ONE "island". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_Pledge.
      In 1965 in Indonesia during political unrest, many Chinese immigrants (newly due to civil wars between national & comunist china), were slaughtered in Indonesia.. as a result due to competition/rivalry of both political system they called democratic (U.S.A) & communists (mainland china). Taiwanese don't know how Indonesian chinese immigrants suffering in 1965 because of their stubborness adding fuel to the rivalry between China & U.S unlike Japanese that solemnly accept defeat to U.S after atomic bomb (probably Taiwanese want the same ending ?) So I suggests to taiwanese.. don't be so selfish , no war is better then winning the war. Let's see if you really are in worse conditions in the future under mainland's rule..then from there you can rise up. I did respect U.S. and western countries, not anymore now. Too simplistic. This world is full of unknown . Becareful of what you want. You are dragging the whole world to abbyss if war breakout. The consequences will be received by many countries. Wondering if you know Jesus' word how to respond when somebody asking/robbing for your clothes ?

      Maybe read the agreement itself and you might understand that nothing has happened except Chinese propaganda and aggression. The US is doing exactly according to the agreement, and the US obligations to Taiwan under it.

      The United States has never recognized PRC's claim on Taiwan. So, there is no change. The US acknowledge China said it owns Taiwan but under US' One China Policy, the sovereignty of Taiwan is "Undetermined" and the differences between the mainland and Taiwan should be resolved through peaceful means. Go check out the US One China Policy. It is different from China's One China Principle.

      @tigerhu;
      We recognize “China” starting from the name “Ching dynasty” to the current name “People’s Republic of China”.
      During the time China was named “Republic of China”, it submitted to UN a constitutional map of the 9th dashline borderline. That map included Taiwan as a province, is recognized by the world.
      And is still in use by the current China, named People’s Republic of China. By historical extension, my government does recognize Taiwan as a province of China, currently named PRC.
      What’s interesting is China just filed the 10th dashline, adding water east of Taiwan. That’s going to make Japan edgy. Since japan, quietly, has been sneakily building isles in that neighborhood.
      I think China is ready to take on japan.
