Virtual Team Building Games - Part 1

- Wow!!! 490 people were on the Zoom session today on Virtual Team Building Games! It was so fun to see so many people join from all over the world. This was my first time facilitating and managing a group this large, so it definitely wasn't perfect. But the activities are there!
Takeaways and Lessons Learned: I made several mistakes but learned some valuable lessons at the same time. Here's a few things to know before you watch the session:
1. I didn't know I needed to 'pin' my video screen to the top of the gallery view so it recorded my video as well as my slide deck. Epic fail! So when you watch this, you can't see me. You can hear me, but you can't see me. So when I am demonstrating things on video you won't know what I'm doing. Sooooo bummed.... I was tempted not to post this one and re-shoot it, but I figure we're all figuring this out in real-time, and someone else might as well learn from my mistakes. I'm going to offer this same session again next week so I can re-record it. I'm sure it will go smoother now that I have a better idea of what to do.
2. You can't turn off or pause the attendee Annotate buttons once the meeting has started. Allow time at the beginning of each session for people to play with the buttons and figure out how to navigate. As we all learn how to navigate these new virtual platforms, know that people will be frustrated with the technology pieces. I had to 'Clear Annotations' about 1,000 times during the session. People are curious and they are just trying to figure out how all the buttons work! Don't get frustrated, just know they are learning.
3. Having someone designated to help post links and answer attendee questions is so helpful. My Office Manager Cheryl Rodriguez was a ROCK STAR today managing the Chat Box and posting helpful links for folks. I'm so grateful for my staff.
4. We're in this together. I received many, many emails from attendees afterwards thanking me for my time for putting together the document and the presentation at no cost. The way I look at it is this... I'm not a nurse or an ER doc helping on the front lines of covid-19, but I'm pretty good at this team building thing. This is a way for me to give back to society in these unprecedented times.
5. There are lots and lots of other things I learned, but I'll quit typing now and let you watch the video. The biggest thing I learned though? It will be better next time... Which means I'm learning. And growing. And I already have ideas for 10 more games... Stay tuned... ~Michelle Cummings, the 'Big Wheel' of Training Wheels.
Thank you Michelle. Your presentation is completely changing my initial reaction to virtual project management and virtual teams. Your expertise is paving the way for so many who will follow. Great job!
