Thank you for the video; I subscribed and thumbs up. When you show "with tuner" and "without tuner", are you talking about an external tuner or the internal tuner? Also, are you using Radials, if so, how many and how long? I'm totally new to Amateur Radio; I've only been studying for two weeks and I'm ready to take the Technician test next week when it is available. I have a Yaesu 991a coming in 4 days and I received an MFJ-2990 and a Comet GP-6 today. The instructions for the MFJ-2990 show using Radials which I've never heard of, and the downloaded Yaesu manual talks about an optional FC-40 External Tuner. I thought the Yaesu 991a had a tuner but I guess it uses the external too... do I need that? Thanks again. I see you are a Pilot... me too; I built my own Airplane.

The SWR is flat only at the transmitter, but not tuning out the loss in the coax and antenna. Try it again with antenna tuner selected as EXTERNAL, which will give a more accurate reading of the power transfer. Tuner should be at base of antenna for best efficiency, such as one of the automatic tuners like the SGC or MFJ or others.. If the coax run is short and low loss it should not make too much difference.

A Dummy Load has a Great SWR but they make a Terrible Antenna for communications. The biggest factor is how well do they Transmit and Receive on the air? You mentioned running an amplifier in another comment so I hope that they understand the antenna is only rated for 250 watts PEP so only a small amplifier.

Hi Luis, the SWR looks good, but how much forward power is getting out realistically? I just find it hard to accept that a vertical like that is getting 1.0 to 1.3 on all bands. Pretty sure you aren't radiating a lot of your power. The tuner is just keeping your radio satisfied......I would be interested in knowing how much power really is at the antenna. how much of your 100w is getting out across all the bands?

Walking Man Video Roger that it’s a good point. I ran the same test at 40 watts before recording the video and had the same results. I was shocked that’s why I made the video. I turned it down to 5 watts so that I don’t encourage everyone else to tune and test at 40 watts. Realistically I do drive it up to 100 watts on all bands with very little difference. About 1 to 5 percent difference. However keep in mind that the mast is grounded about 6 feet into the ground and it’s about 8 feet away from the house where the electrical grounding is.

@@K2fig Thanks for the reply. i am intrigued to try this out myself, thanks for making the video. Cheers :)

Thank you for commenting. You make a really good point. I’m going to remake the video with results at 100 percent power. That’s really where the rub is.
I will place a warning “do not test at high power until you first test at lower power settings, gradually adding power.” Last thing I ever want is for someone to lose a rig. More radios and hams equals more contacts and fun. 73.

@@K2fig Testing low power is a must. The point I am trying to get to is whether the use of the ATU on that vertical actually is efficient in radiating 80 to 90% of your radios power or is it being lost because of the manipulation by the ATU. If you aren't radiating most of your power then you could be there all day, all year calling CQ and nobody will hear you.

Update please! It's been a year - I see you have good SWR but are you making contacts, getting good signal reports back? Do you still recommend the antenna?

Yessir. absolutely. contacts confirmed world wide. and also works well with an amplifier. however it does require tuning with an amplifier. i suggest a tuner that can handle the power as well.
