Just came from watching it. I thought this movie would be boring but it’s actually really really intriguing. I usually don’t watch these type of movie but I’m glad I saw this one. It was great!
I'd have to disagree on the whole 'TLJ' being a 'studio movie'. Rian Johnson had carte blanche control of that project. If it were a real converyor-belt studio movie it would have been far more formulaic instead of trying to twist things and completely abandon all of the narrative momentum the new series had. He wrote and storyboarded the entire thing. He had a great deal of creative freedom on the project. Which I think is actually pretty cool, even if I don't neccessarily love TLJ (but I don't hate it nearly as much as the prequel fanbois who are still butthurt over RLM ruining their childhood).
@baole58 Ignoring the opinions of which is the worst, I still dont see the relations. The og comment makes it seem as if prequel fans are the one not liking the movie,
AND the only reason WHY Rian was afforded so much creative control of that movie was because his views matched the producer's namely Kathleen Kennedy! Just look at how much she has disagreed with other directors she has hired, and even fired for having creative difference to her own views. I also think in many aspects Rian did bow to Kennedy's influence in this respect, and i believe the story for TLJ was not 100% his own; I believe Rian stole some aspects/elements from fan-fiction, and even some particular movies from the past, to build up the story he got to, and fulfil Kennedy's overall wishes. She had massive creative differences with Gareth Edwards from a original story that was from two previous Lucasfilm employees with Rogue One, there was rumor she had some creative differences with JJ. Abrams over TFA and we all know what happened with Solo and even Trevorrow with his ideas for Episode 9. Yet Kathleen Kennedy had not one single disagreement with Rian Johnson over TLJ!? I find highly suspicious. Being more of a amateur director having only done a handful of movies at that point, and Kennedy having decades of experience under her belt producing movies in Hollywood, i think Johnson bowed to her influence and made the EXACT kind of movie she wanted.
It's true that audiences want to bring the original concept back to theaters, but the reason the recent original concept films fail is that they don't have mass appeal. Let's be more specific when saying we want more originality. We probably want what Hollywood doesn't see any value in making. A big budget flick full of star performers and state of the art special effects telling a completely new story with crowd-pleasing elements.
I really enjoyed this movie, I thought the father was faking his own death at first and strayed from the obvious suspect because it was too easy ( I keep expecting a twist!). The detectives accent was so thick, southern, and drawly I could smell the cigars and fried chicken off his breath
Good no spoiler review. Wanted to see this because I enjoy who done it stories but I didn’t like Last Jedi so I wasn’t sure if this was gonna be any good.
Y'all making me feel old, even though I'm younger than both of them - I watched Murder, She Wrote. I still actually watch it whenever it comes up on telly.
*Spoiler review:* I didn't like the set up of this movie, because is was too 'documentarish'. But when the focus was solely on Ana de Armas, the movie was beginning to get pretty enjoyable. But the problem with this is, that the director does this only to throw the audience of to give you the 'big twist ending'. Didn't like it that much. The casting is huge, but kind of unnecessary in my opinion. Because none of them have really something to do. Except for Chris Evans' character. Perfect rental, to watch with the family at home. No need to put on your clothes and shoes, step out of the door, get into the car, driving to the cinema, waiting in line, buying (expensive) tickets, waiting in line again, buying shitty (expensive) food, get out of the theater, get into the car, drive to your house, getting out, opening the door, getting inside, take of your shoes, take off your clothes.. No need to do all that.
I really enjoyed the movie and Rian Johnson has definitely redeemed himself from this mistake with star wars 8. Not perfect but heavily enjoyable, with thought provoking commentary on family's during death.
I swear Korey is deluded with saying how RJ split the SW fans.....Split would mean theres a equal amount of disagreement for the most part.....Naw he made a land slide cause I see more people hating or waiting for the new SW to end and not caring anymore than I see any anticipation for it...there really isn't any split at all. the whole has been not good after his movie
What about 'Seeing Things' the Canadian murder mystery series where the newspaper reporter gets telepathic visions of who the murderer is of all the investigations he reports on ... great tv show ..
Some part of me is curious about what a Fish Called Wanda reboot could look like with Daniel Craig as Otto. I feel that casting a very British actor in a cartoonishly American role feels very in the nature of A Fish Called Wanda.
I swear Martin is deliberately obtuse sometimes. The film took a cliche plot structure because it was going out of its way to twist the formula inside out in ways that are unique. This is something nearly every critic noticed, but it seemed to fly over Martin's head cause "welp, just another murder mystery." Does this guy even watch the movie?
Why do Star Wars fans not appreciate nuance in the saga? They do realize that Empire is the best because it was the most challenging and nuanced film, right? So why do you all hate The Last Jedi, because it's too nuanced, and not simplistic? Did any of you see TROS? That film looks like it was written by JJ and Terrio watching Fandom Menace fan theory videos, and pulling the ideas out of a hat. But of course, JJ is a Star Wars genius, which I guess answers more about what type of person the Star Wars fan is, rather than the quality of the filmmaker. Now that I made everyone get ready to @ me...
@@dreamshakejunya ok, I've heard that comment before, that it's a good film, just not a "good Star Wars film". Seeing as you appear to be an expert, tell me what is Star Wars? There is a correct answer to this, but I'm curious as to what you believe the answer is.
@@dreamshakejunya I'm sorry but it appears you missed what I was asking. The question was "What is Star Wars? If you had watched Empire of Dreams or read any articles based on what Star Wars IS the answer is clear. Star Wars is the monomyth. Plain and simple. It is what George Lucas used as his basis, heavily influenced by Campbell's Hero of a 1000 Faces, which for brevity is the story told a million times, the epic of the hero's journey. Some of the earliest and most indelible of these in the English language are Beowulf and King Arthur. One merely needs to take a cursory look at what those stories are (their plots and characterizations) that one can see Luke Skywalker is basically Beowulf and King Arthur rolled into one. All Star Wars movies borrow heavily from this epic storytelling pattern, whilst often borrowing heavily from Greek Tragedian tropes, especially the Prequels (more on that later). The transformative nature inherent within the monomyth is found in The Last Jedi, which presents Luke Skywalker precisely as the monomyth dictates he should be, and the same way we find Beowulf and Arthur at the end of their lives, and how their actions end up saving the day reestablishing their legends. So if anything, The Last Jedi has been the MOST Star Wars movie since 1983. Further, when one considers this, the reason becomes clear why The Prequels failed to connect with wide audiences compared to its predecessors, in that the PT was more heavily based on Greek Tragedy than monomyth, or simply the antihero's journey (PT) vs the hero's journey (OT). Now we can debate?
@@dreamshakejunya lol, you are correct that art is indeed subjective. And you have shared your subjective opinion clearly by making your opinion sound like fact, without any basis in objectivity. Star Wars borrowing tropes from Westerns and War movies does not undo that it is the monomyth at its core. Lucas having the Prequels "in mind from the start" is different from what he would eventually make of them. It still does not answer why the Prequels failed to achieve mainstream audience appreciation as its predecessors because again he chose to change the direction away from the hero's journey and focus on the antihero journey instead. The very idea that you make stark claims about one particular movie that holds truest to the OG Star Wars model as being "not a good Star Wars movie" was what I was replying to. At its heart and structure and even plot and characterizations, that claim holds no water. Just because it seems to betray your own vision of what Star Wars "is" does not mean it is not suddenly Star Wars, or "Johnson shoving Star Wars" up anyone or anything's orifice. Star Wars is a large thing because it is the monomyth and applies endless cinematic tropes to achieve its connection to audiences familiar with cinematic language. If Star Wars began in any other form of media, it would borrow that media's tropes as its foundation, but it still would have been the monomyth, which is frankly not debatable. We can debate, say, "how does the monomyth apply to other characters inside Last Jedi apart from Luke" or "how does Last Jedi utilize, or fail to utilize, cinematic tropes to tell the monomyth?" Not "it's not Star Wars". Because it is.
@@dreamshakejunya "no Star Wars moments". I suppose this means no dogfights in space, no Force abilities revealed or used, no Star Wars themes openly debated by its characters, no light side or dark side, no aliens, no space, no war, no Chewie flying the Falcon saving the day, no good guys nor bad guys, no lightsabers at all. Yep, it might as well be a courtroom drama.
@@dreamshakejunya also, if Star Wars is really just a Space Opera Western, why didn't you just say that at the start instead of saying its many things to many people? That would have sufficed as a more appropriate answer, despite being a bit flawed as those are merely tropes and not truly at the core of this. Because what are most westerns but... a continuation and/or extension of the monomyth. Ever see the Western with the older hero being pushed to one more act of heroism? Or the western where the unlikely person becomes the hero and they walk off into the sunset? All monomyth. It's why this story connects on so many levels and can take so many forms, and the greatest achievement of Star Wars is that it took the monomyth and told it on the biggest stage ever attempted and it worked because it had to.
I love that all the extreme TLJ haters have to deal with Johnson getting praise for this movie. And if you wonder if it really bothers them, as someone who frequents various message boards where Star Wars is discussed, I can assure you that it does.
The last Jedi will always be a bad Star Wars movie to me.... I’ll never hold that against him even tho I haven’t seen anything he’s done outside TLJ. That’s petty lol
Mike R. He could make 10 great movies in a row , win awards ,and get all the praise from the world. Saw this movie yesterday, and I'd give it a full price. Very enjoyable with everyone bringing their A game. The movie gives away MOST of what happened early on but stick with it for an enjoyable ride
Eyes Wide Shut, Topaz, Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, Interstellar, After Hours, Hateful Eight, Prizzi's Honor, Wolf, 1941, The Last Jedi... Being talented doesn't mean all your movies are good. Rian Johnson is quite talented and has made some good films. TLJ was franchise-killing garbage. No contradiction there.
he's a guy that has room for improvement but refuse to accept this fact and would prefer to insult others over it. The guy didnt even started out like a normal director. His family is rich enough to pay for all of his upbringings.
All the reviews I've seen have not explained the medicine switch detail to the story. Makes no sense to me. So random mixed up the labels but blanc believes she wasn't responsible because she was able to identify the bottles later just by their weight in her hands. Absolute hokum but who cares. It's a bit of an enjoyable romp that is a good antidote to the detritus of the modern world.
I remember BRICK I liked that movie. It was weird and mysterious and I wanted him to find her so bad. To mr it had kind of a weird, highschoolish Twin Peaks feel to it, from what I remember. Not as R rated as Twin Peaks (because I think I remember some messed up stuff being in there related to Laura and some of the male characters. It's been a long time since I watched it), but definitely that kind of what the hell is going on here and where did this girl dissapeared to?! 👀suspense. It was good from what I remember watching it YEARS ago...and Martin, but I think you watchef at least one whole episode of Murder She Wrote...lol...I did a few times when I was younger at my Grandma's house. I'll admit I liked it and then I checked in to the Agatha Christie novels and liked those too. I also remember being totally freaked out by how sexy Angela Lansbury was when she was younger, I couldn't believe that Delilah from Samson and Delilah was Angela Lansbury😯..and she was a great Mame too. Might have to check this movie out. Saw the title at the movie theater and though " sounds stupid"...but it sounds good actually. Cloak and dagger mysteries with good characters are great. The cast is a top notch line up for sure and Jamie Lee Curtis usually takes up fun or interesting roles in decent films so.....You know, like Ophelia in Trading Places ❤😄....Yeah! It's that time of year again..."Louie" 🍈🍈✖....😔. You know Chris Evan's played a cocky 🍆 head in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World too and he did a silly good job there too, lol.
Whoever wrote this movie thinks he is way smarter than he is. The movie is overall enjoyable but the "mystery" aspect is really not that clever. Half of the episodes of Monk are more interesting.
Dude, let it go. If you can enjoy "Hacksaw Ridge" despite Mel Gibson being an anti-semite and "Chinatown" despite Roman Polanski being a rapist, then watching "Knives Out" despite Rian Johnson making a movie you didn't like shouldn't be that difficult.
@@justinriley Your right, Mel made horrible statements and could potentially be a antisemite and a racist. He apologyzed and I am willing to move forward. But, I wll watch with caution. Planski and Johnson? No, I am still waiting for their acknowlegement of their wrong doing, so NO my $ will go elseware. I am entitled to support who I want.
@@TheEnzyme94 Johnson has nothing to apologize for. He hasn't committed any ACTUAL crimes (portraying a fictional character in a way you don't agree with is not one). To put him on the level as Polanski is irrational and frankly insensitive.
@@justinriley That is certainly one opinion. And you are entitled to it. I did not put them at the same level btw. You brought him up. I dont watch Polanskis movies either. Ryan Johnson does not have to appologize. Support him if u want.
'Looper' was stupid, 'The Last Jedi' was terrible... allow me to have some serious doubts about this guy and his weird movies. Let's see, maybe this is finally something worth it.
Like many I despise what Rian did to Star Wars, but I was willing to give this movie a try....until he opened his mouth and declared that a character in the film was made in reference to SWFans. Should have kept quiet.
By the creator of Last Jedi. Yup, i'm skipping it up. Not just because he ruined Star Wars for everyone, but also because of his way of handling criticism. He is nothing but talentless hack who is full of himself. He is closer to types like Uve Boll and hopefully will end up like him.
I don't consider Last Jedi to be great, but that's simply because it's another Star Wars movie. I also don't consider those that got upset by it to be especially intelligent. So I wouldn't find it useful to take those criticisms to heart. I see no creative growth coming from listening to the people that mostly just bitched about Laura Dern's hair.
@@ParkerStanfieldFilm You probably haven't seen a single review of that movie. And considering it has more negative reviews than prequels i can already see you didn't bothered to even check up anything related to that piece of shit movie at all. You might as well praise Terminator Genysys while you're at it.
Well with respect to Rian Johnson i think the murder mystery or just crime/thriller is well suit to that sob because thats one thing he know well enough how to do, "subvert expectations". Unfortunately it was something e did not need in the concluding part of a epic nine part saga in the biggest, most beloved movie franchise in the world.

Happy Thanksgiving DT!
Rian Johnson may have messed up Star Wars but at least he can do his own original content well.
Are you guys going to do the 21 Bridges review?
I'd have to disagree on the whole 'TLJ' being a 'studio movie'. Rian Johnson had carte blanche control of that project. If it were a real converyor-belt studio movie it would have been far more formulaic instead of trying to twist things and completely abandon all of the narrative momentum the new series had. He wrote and storyboarded the entire thing. He had a great deal of creative freedom on the project. Which I think is actually pretty cool, even if I don't neccessarily love TLJ (but I don't hate it nearly as much as the prequel fanbois who are still butthurt over RLM ruining their childhood).
prequel fanboys? How does the hate for TLJ have any relation to the prequels?
@baole58 Ignoring the opinions of which is the worst, I still dont see the relations. The og comment makes it seem as if prequel fans are the one not liking the movie,
@baole58 Prequels are the worstest eva!!! Disney: Hold my mouse ears bitch

Alot of us Black kids grew up watching those shows with Grandma lol. If I can catch an older episode I will watch it for nostalgia.
In short, audiences want to discover the next Die Hard or Pretty Woman, they're not looking for the next Boyhood.

Ana de Armas deserved an Oscar this film was absolutely fantastic I've seen it 5 times
I really enjoyed this movie, I thought the father was faking his own death at first and strayed from the obvious suspect because it was too easy ( I keep expecting a twist!). The detectives accent was so thick, southern, and drawly I could smell the cigars and fried chicken off his breath

Y'all making me feel old, even though I'm younger than both of them - I watched Murder, She Wrote. I still actually watch it whenever it comes up on telly.
*Spoiler review:*
I didn't like the set up of this movie, because is was too 'documentarish'.
I disagree it was worth my money. The scenery should be enjoyed on a big screen!
Jamie Lee Curtis was my favorite . But I never have to watch this movie again
I really enjoyed the movie and Rian Johnson has definitely redeemed himself from this mistake with star wars 8. Not perfect but heavily enjoyable, with thought provoking commentary on family's during death.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Sequel, with a different cast of course....but Daniel Craig returning to solve the mystery.

All the reviews I've seen have not explained the medicine switch detail to the story. Makes no sense to me.

Thanks for telling me this was Ryan Johnson's film. I almost went to watch it.
@@TheEnzyme94 Johnson has nothing to apologize for. He hasn't committed any ACTUAL crimes (portraying a fictional character in a way you don't agree with is not one). To put him on the level as Polanski is irrational and frankly insensitive.

Rian Johnson knows enough about Star Wars.
