Dagda's Magic Harp

- This is one of many stories about the mythological king of ancient Ireland, know as "Dagda" (pronounced "dada"). Dagda is said to have possessed, among other wonderful things, a magical harp which he could use to produce supernatural phenomena. This story was first written down by Christian monks around the 12th century AD, but at that time it was already ancient and had been handed down verbally for more than a thousand years.
According to legend, there were two tribes living in Ireland at the time of King Dagda: the Fomorians who were small and dark haired people, and the Celtic "Tuatha De Danaan" who were tall, light skinned and blond and whose leader was King Dagda. It seems they were constantly at war and this particular tale has to do with the time the Fomorians stole Dagda's magic harp (something which turned out to be a very bad idea).
The instrument I am using to accompany myself in this song is a two part affair of my own devising which I call the "tibicen" (the Latin word for "piper"). It is entirely electronic, and consists of a small keyboard which sits in my lap, and a pedalboard (similar to a church organ) on the floor in floor in front of me. Nothing was added to this performance and there are no overdubs or additions of any kind. This is exactly the way it was performed.
The pedalboard provides the drone, while the keyboard plays melody. The instrument has a huge range, can play in any key, and I have tried to show some of what it can do in this video.
In ancient time, when sagas of this sort were performed, they sometimes went on for hours. I had to cut this down to its bare essentials in order to bring it in under eight minutes. The unedited story contains a lot of interesting details but I didn't want to bore everyone by going on too long!
A 20th level bard singing about another 20th level bard!
Dude! Look up "welsh bard painting" on Google images. The Bard warrior is 100% a thing. Gaelic poet warriors sung storms away...
Bard warrior is definitely a real thing
❤❤❤🎉
💞🙏
The writers of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION also borrowed from the story of Dagda's magic harp. There was an episode in which Captain Picard was abducted and assimilated by the Borg but Commander Data found a way to link to the Borg collective and put them all to sleep. Dagda used magic - Data used technology.
Love the tie in.
My favourite episode/story. Thanks for the original. While everything is ... every smart thing is .. derivative, knowing the derivation adds so much to the story. Much appreciated; moreover, your skills? My heart melts.
Amazing! I never knew this
You are one of the best humans, bud. Please keep posting songs.
@Peter Pringle - As the saying goes, "everything old is new again."
The MABINOGION is a treasure trove of wonderful ballads and stories.
@Peter Pringle - Thank you for the information.
Truly an ancient soul. Once a bard, always a bard.
The Dagda (also Daghda, Daghdha, Dagdae, or Dagda Mór), usually written with the definite article, is one of the most important gods in Irish-Celtic religion. He appears as a multi-talented warrior-leader of the Tuatha Dé Dannan, invaders of ancient Ireland who win a battle against the resident Fir Bolg. Another battle follows, this time against the seafaring Fomorians, and again the Tuatha Dé Dannan are victorious. It is the Fomorians who set the Dagda his famous challenge of eating a huge amount of porridge from his own magical cauldron. With his mighty club, inexhaustible cauldron, and great talent playing the harp, the Dagda was a universal god in Irish religion considered to dwell in many places, including at Newgrange. As his warrior character, the Dagda is killed by Caitlín, queen of the Fomorians.
Again...we need a 'LOVE' button to click for Peters work. On a sad note it is testament to how far we have come form appreciating music that this man has less subscribers on you tube than he should. How does the soul, skill and power of this music compare to a modern pop song. No contest. Remember This is one person with one voice and one instrument.
When I have children, I'm totally making this a bedtime song/story...
Really conjures up images of older medieval times.
Thanks!
I really recommend reading Celtic mythology (the real thing, not the neo-pagan wishy-washy reinterpretations), kids or not. It's a mythology that doesn't get much attention but my oh my, is it beautiful and powerful!
There once was a Magikarp that learned more than splash.
You mean it learned tackle?
It's mouth became of fire, and it turned it's foes to ash
Hi Peter Pringle! I recently discovered your channel while searching for ancient music! I have since listened through everything you have made and I am so impressed and awestruck by your skill and dedication in reproducing the ancient instruments and your mastery playing them! A true artisan and bard :). Please continue make music such as this, would be lovely to hear more music such as the ancient Egyptian love song and Epic of Gilgamesh.
I'm from Scandinavia and we have a rich story-telling tradition and especially from Viking times. Would be so interesting to hear your interpretation of poems by Snorri Sturlasson - the greatest Viking skald. And I agree with many others here, we want a longer version!!
Keep up the amazing musical work Peter!!
Your thoughts speak for me also, thank you. And of course BRAVO to the great Peter Pringle.
agree with everything you said, and thanks for saying it so well,
I so love to hear another from who knows where, my heart when I hear Peter Pringle, ohhh, time travel is real....
Actually, I COULD listen to this for hours....
it would be wonderful, wouldn't it? totally agree.
Harpyie Me, too.
Bard's music
Yep
Peter you are my new hero, can spend hours listening to your music.
Yes, astounding..so glad I found this man.
The Tibicen is really nice Peter. I agree with Tom, I think a lot of musicians would be interested in one! Thank you for sharing a little of your world with us :)
The mix of your instrument, playing, voice, story acting and singing, music sound and even the timing of "sound of silence" is just perfect. Bravissimo!!!
The Tibicen kind of sounds like the Uilleann (sp?) Pipes. I wish I had one! You are one amazing musical treasure...thank you for sharing your gift.
I love the instrument. It gives you the sounds of the uillean pipes and yet allows you to sing along.
I can hardly find words to describe how great this song is.
I stumbled across your channel last night, Peter, and I've been thoroughly entertained for hours today.
As others have said, thank you for bringing all this amazing ancient and medieval music to life. You have a wonderful voice, a real command of language, and your multi-instrumental abilities are most impressive!
A music scholar myself for over twenty years now, it would be very difficult for me to find any fault with or to critique this performance. Absolutely fantastic.
I can almost see and hear the events as he sings of them... Such is the power of his craft.
Superb 👏👏.
As Irish people we have been robbed of our history, our great history. 🇮🇪🇮🇪
Bard's music belongs to all west european people
Really glad I found this.I love the more obscure music. If u have a soul, honest music will always reach

Real Deal Man - this guy is out of this world in a great way!
Peter, you and your music are enchanting. How lucky I am to hear you on this mortal plane.
Lovely song, story and instrument!! Definatelly was a very bad idea to steal Dagda's clairseach! Many heads rolled down! ;) great videos as always!
Simply breath taking.. Beautiful, such passion! Thank you I will never forget this.
Thank you for doing all of these Ancient Pieces! You are so talented and knowledgeable! I am developing a high school level Ancient History Class for my home educated son, and your works are helping me to give him a much more rich experience. Thank you so much! Thank you. I absolutely enjoyed your playing, and your singing is superb. It gave me much pleasure to listen to your wonderful voice.
What a delight to listen to. Thank you
Love the story (history) behind this song! I wouldn't have been the least bored by hearing 'the rest of the story', but yes, time is limited here, sadly! Love the little bit of humor you added near the end, Peter... and so nice to see you go out with a smile again... 8) Thank you for another interesting, informative and 'excellent-as-always' performance!!!
wow, this is wonderful ... right through from the first notes of the tibicen, to the smile at the end ...the poetry the story is put into is great, too ... and the tapestry behind is magical ... it would be great to hear the whole long version!
I can’t find the button that lets me like this as much as it deserves.
W O W !!! This truly resonates with my Celtic origins - Irish... this music transports me back to a time when life was simple... a knowing ...
So AWESOME to feel and hear history

Wonderfully played and sung, congratulations!
The tale of King Dagda was adopted by Walt Disney:
In ancient times, a magic harp granted happiness to all its inhabitants.
Some day an evil magician kidnapped the harp, and a great famine assaulted the country.
Three poor peasants: Donald, Mickey, and Goofy decided to save the country. They made up to the magicians's realm. With many whimsical embroilments they recovered the harp form the magicians's greedy hands and saved their country.

Great.
In a way feels like Epic Power Metal on slow motion.
As I sit here in Dublin listening to your wonderful mythological saga's on instruments you made yourself I am greatly impressed. I have a shelf behind me of mythological books which began with Celtic, since I'm Irish. Upon researching the people mentioned in the Irish saga's; Partalonians (King Partalon's people), Nemedians (King Nemed's people), Fomor (Canaanite giants or Rephaim, from the Hebrew word Rafa, meaning giant), Fír Bolg (bag men, in Gaelic), Milesians (King Mil's people) and Tuatha de Danaan (tribe of the goddess Danu or perhaps tribe of Dan), I can confidently say the Fomorians were not small. The Tuatha de Danann, Fir Bolg, Nemedians and Milesians were all definitely Scythian (Aryan) off-shoots. They directly say it in works like the Book of Invasions and I would suggest the Partalonians were too, (probably Greek from other Scythian invasions, Ionian or Archemined, not Dorian) and the Aryan people of the time tended to be 7-8' tall, blue eyed and red/blonde haired. The Fomor, however, were in the range of 10-12' and above, according to records. They were part of the expansive Ba'al and Tanith worshipping Rephaim who were at their height around the 3rd millennium B.C. in the land of Canaan (Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and parts of Syria). They had tribal names such as Zamzumin, Jebusites, Amorites, Amalekites and Hittites among others. The Fomorians were part of that and were one of many groups who traveled by sea around the Med and up and down the African and European coastlines as pirates, merchants, colonisers and slave takers.
The Dagda, large of girth, powerful and wise, I love him!
I probably haven't heard anything more beautiful than that. I really like your voice and this style of music. It would be a great idea to record a music album. Thanks for your creativity.
Thank you Master Bard.

Hi Peter, Has the tibicen ever been reproduced? I would dearly love to have one! I'm guessing that you would sell a great many of them...
Thanks you!!!
Thanks you!!!
Thanks you!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️🇵🇱
A Formorian's among us!
+HungerGamesFan88 Fortunely for us, Nuada haves a flesh arm again, so he's not more Nuada of the silver arm.
This is so beautiful. It goes marvelously with the books on Celtic mythology that I'm reading. Important to mention, however, that King Dagda is also God the Dagda. I wonder if English "Jack and the Beanstalk" took inspiration from the Irish myth, albeit with its own twists of course, considering that the harp comes to life, responds to the giant (the Dagda was of gigantic size), and Fomorians are sometimes considered to be giants.
Honestly, I could have easily listened to a full version on this; absolutely stunning. Lovely job, and thank you!
Impossible to be bored by such an interesting way of playing this unique instrument! Thank you for sharing Dagda!!!!
Wow another awsome performance
I bend my knee, - Master!
These performances inspire me to set my own stories to song and droning instrumentation

This is amazing, and like all of your work is inspiring. What an instrument! Keep giving us new experiences!
Wow! Only 11 years, but, worth the wait.
What a wonderful story and that you have made it into an English translation, but kept the poetry and the feeling of the medieval period. The instrument you built is remarkable. It sounds Balkan, almost like a gaudier.. I just discovered your music today. Amazing. Thank you
Sublime Peter, thank you
Thanks for informing us about the Tibicen. You’re a genius!
In a wild disarray .....WOOW!
Your videos are wild! So glad I found this channel
