It's worth knowing that Emily, her sister, is an astronomer! In the song Joanna recounts how she promised to remember the meteor/meteoroid thing right... and then gets it wrong. If I recall, Emily is also singing on this track.
Love the reaction brother🙏🏾 Joanna Newsom is like a Stanley Kubrick movie, at surface the music is beautiful and poetic but the is an iceberg effect the more you listen. Would appreciate seeing you reacting to more of her albums, there’s no bad one.
I have heard this album, and am a big Joanna Newsom fan. As you say, it will be an acquired taste for some, but well worth anyone's attention. Thanks for the review. Cheers!
I think reading interpretations of songs can be good but i recommend listining maybe with just the lyrics the first time through and coming yo your own interpretation. Especially since you are talking throughout the song. So it feels like you are just regurgitating other peoples opinions. Maybe wait till the end of the song to do a more in depth discussion and reading of the song?
I definitely agree that the high pitches are an acquired taste. They appear less often in Newsom's other work but I quite like it. Reminds me of keening, a traditional Irish style of singing during mourning. Zombie by the cranberries uses that style.
I typically try to avoid following along with the lyrics and their interpretations (for example my latest video for The Glow PT 2) however with Ys, the lyrics were so dense that I feel like I needed a better understanding as I went along with it. I try to refrain though as best as I can in most cases. But waiting for more thought out opinions after the song is a great suggestion and something I will keep in mind for future videos. Thanks :)

tangential, but looks like Emily has since transitioned more into oceanography and climate science! cool stuff

Regarding Only Skin, and the troubled relationship, on the next album Have One On Me there is the track Does Not Suffice. Really worth a listen.

Unfamiliar with keening but it certainly makes sense given the context of the albums themes and tone. Appreciate the info
