Varanasi (Benares) is the holiest of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism and spiritual capital of India. The city existed at least 3,000 years ago (and possibly much earlier) and according to legend was founded by the god Shiva.
The Ganges is a sacred river to Hindus and dying in Varanasi, and being cremated there on the banks of the Ganges is considered to grant instant salvation.

I visited varanasi in 1990 with my friend Mr. Gupta from Mumbai. I never compare this city with other cities of India. My worship and bath in Ganga mata is still in my heart and mind. I love varanasi diversity and India is different over this planet.

Now that I'm back in the Netherlands I realized how bizarre that city is. I visited Varanasi back in February. The city feels like walking in to some kind of Game of Thrones city. It is truly one of the most interesting places I have ever been to

@@AseemKumar9 The Ganga was up and I couldn't walk along the river, so no big impression of the ghats left.. but walking from ghat to ghat inside the city was one of my most horrible experiences in India.. Also it was during the Shrawan month which made it even worse.. (I am a Shiva devotee myself so nothing against religion) :)

Another superb video of a very special place in the world. Awesome music to capture and convey the essence of a very special experience. I too visited Varanasi in 1975 and did the slow boat ride at dawn. I remember the strength of the small Indian rower as we were shown the ghats. One of life's great experiences. Thank you again for posting and bringing back the memory.
Train Lord that is no more same, even after so much long period of time there would have developed such a holy city but it is very disappointing, that it is no more, except slum and sewage. Holiness of that city is slaughtered in the name of development.

Varanasi might be a holy city or sacred for 1000s of its devotes but it is 100% truth that it is the dirtiest city of India and act as stigma on nations infrastructure ( while there are lot more modern cities like New Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Bangalore, pune etc are doing well and having world class infrastructure)

This is the oldest continuously living city in the world. Government of India is trying to make the living experience in this city more tourist friendly.

I visited Varanasi in 1981 and found the banks of the river repellent because of the dirt and squalor. But it was always an intriguing place with people on foot traversing the ghats and markets. Even the cremation ghats had its own atmosphere of peace and everybody was allowed to do their thing. Now that the Government has decided to clean up one small stretch of the river on the way to the Kashi Visvanath temple I hope more people will feel inspired to make the visit and even find permanent abode in Kashi.
