      The US runs the greatest business in the world. As the reserve currency, they run a business whereby producers trade real goods for US dollar denominated debt. Now, when the balance of trade is setlled, can we use the debt to buy some of the US gold? Surely 3 trillion in USD should basically buy out the entire gold reserve at fort knox. Of course not, why would the US trade their gold reserve for a piece of paper? Can we use the debt to buy say google, microsoft or just about anything worth buying in the capital markets? 3 trillion should basically be able to buy amazon apple and google. No. Can we buy real estate in the US? Sure by all means, go nuts. But if it is in a strategic location it has to say yes to it as well. So what can we do exactly with it? Oh I know, you can come here and experience services in the US. Or you can simply hold onto it on your balance sheet.
      So let me get this straight, if you told me I can run a business whereby I buy what you need with a piece of paper and I dictate what you can buy from me using that piece of paper, I would gladly run that business all day. Oh and btw, the interest on that piece of paper is also paid by another piece of paper that I issue.
      In one of buffett's news letters he talks about how a trade deficit isn't sustainable because we are selling the farm. But who said anything about allowing the farm to be sold? What if I restrict this paper to only purchase crap assets like a shovel? Then is this business so bad?
      As a side note. One of the reasons why Nixon got off the gold standard is because the french called in US debt in gold. So basically De Gaulle decided to ask the US to ship a whackload of gold almost ceremoniously out of the US on a navy ship in return for USD debt. Nixon is no idiot. He realizes this is a dumb trade. Hence why we no longer have the gold standard.

    • @skliu
      @skliu 5 років тому +1

      @Kytsche True, this a really good point actually. But that assumes that manufacturing (which I assume encompasses most of what we call tradeable goods sector) is the major part of the economy. I would argue that manufacturing will play a much smaller role while services play a much larger one. In this case here, the dutch disease effect (or equivalent of it) of being the reserve currency is much less. When we value services its much harder to have an apple to apple comparison.
      One other argument about the United Kingdom isn't that its currency was the reserve currency, that wasn't the issue. The issue was that they stubbornly clung to the gold standard. Good old Montagu Norman decided for some reason that it was wise to make the pound worth as much relative to gold post WWI when in reality that was not possible. This ensured that its industry is uncompetitive against say the French who had no issues about devaluing theirs. If Britain had followed Keynesian economics they could have retained their advantage. This is all pretty much laid out in Lords of Finance.

    China has mastered the keynes economics and improved on it. It encourages individual entreprenership and, in the meantime, uses governmetn power to guide the economy at the macro level. For example, China's effort to bring poor people out of poverty (called 扶贫), if in the US. will be caritized as wasting tax payers money and labled as socialism. But in China, the long term benefit is they become new demand and purchasing power. Most of the speed trains are not profitable but the government built it anyway to improve business and conmerce efficiency.

    China saw what happened to the U.S.S.R. (financial and political breakdown) and thought to herself: "THAT is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME!" and so she proceeded to tighten her grip on her "red satellites" (notice the smaller stars around the the main star on her flag). There is definitely a mixed feeling of nationalistic loyalty that overcomes any fear of being pushed about by your own government. In that regard, President of China XI is viewed by Chinese people with great affection, sort of "father figure" no other leader on earth can really copy. After all, about one-fourth of all humanity is Chinese! So, whatever you say, whoever you are, please remember to take you hat off to the wonderful people of China! Having been misused and abused by "barbarian" western nation for two centuries, they are now regaining their ancient status as "the first great human civilization". And had the Romans ever clashed with China, the Romans would lost. Why? The ancient Romans were "plunderers and cruel barbarians" who sent all their goodies back to the main ant nest of Rome. The Chinese have recently built a base on the backside of the moon --- and believe me, they'll never attack anyone. They navigate complexity with ease --- so why are you jealous? What did they ever do to you (except carve tunnels through the Rocky Mountains, so you could have a railroad that crosses you continent from coast to coast (and then you BANNED them from entry -- how racist can one be?)

    US supremacy could not just simply step aside for other to take over as Americans has enjoyed for more than 250 years. The cycle and economic transition have finally called for a change just like what happened to UK, when the controlled 2/3 of the world and in the end, it had to give up those colonies so to keep their economy afloat and save their country from financial collapse. USA is now in the same boat with UK before. With its huge debts and nation divided, economic collapsed, poverty and unemployment rate spiked. At this point of crisis, if USA is blind or arrogantly to recognize of their situation, and continue to intervene , interfere, inciting war, invading, destroying and ruining other countries, USA will die from their own ignorance and keep on spending on the military operation , I don’t think USA will last another 10 years.

Suffice it to say, this journey is just starting and it's important for the world that China succeeds, but it's far from certain given that no nation has navigated this transition successfully without greater political freedom for individuals. The Chinese form of government is efficient and effective to get things done, because it is a traditional Chinese system of meritocracy , selection plus election. All top tanking government officials have extensive experience in administering over millions of people starting from district, provincial and statement levels. The goal of the government is for the people in their quality of life. The successful government is reflected in current surveys by UK and American based companies saying that over 90% of the Chinese people in China are happy with their government whereas some developed countries have low percentage in the satisfaction of their governments. If you have watched a series of videos on the achievements of China in UA-cam, you would find that the above truth. Achievement of China in the past 40 years speaks for itself. We must speak the truth with facts and should not rely on media which may be bias and do not speak the truth impartially. According to your surname , I think you are a Chinese. well china economy is far more efficient than that of western economies. from her talking, with all her knowledge, she has no strategic thinking. he doesn't know how to run a huge economy. in that aspect, she is more like something between economist and financial analyst. but a lot of western economists are nothing more than a well educated accountant.
