Alright so a quick update because this is extremely important. This does NOT store well. Pecan and peanut oils that I have pressed have stored for well over a year without any loss of quality in smell or taste. THIS oil from the pumpkin seeds goes rancid extremely fast. Like in a matter of days. So it needs to be refrigerated. Making this oil an extremely poor choice for long term storage. So before you get super excited thinking this is an amazing possibility, just know that it doesn't store well
I have not found this when buying Flora and other organic cold pressed. I am sure there are some other brands that are equal. I also keep it in a cool place and the weather here is never very hot on the Central Coast of Ca.
Look into lipofuskins and how they contribute to liver -age spots if ingested in large quantities, not organic cold pressed, or not sprayed w pesticides -non GMO. Lipofuskins are also internal and cause health issues to the organs where they are found. Not good, not good. I do use one tbs of pumpkin seed oil a day and eat pumpkin seeds. Many health benefits! Thanks for your video.
Greetings from styria we actually do roast our seed before we process it to make oil. We dry the seeds then grind the seeds put water and salt to it then it gets roasted till the water is mostly gone while roasting it gets steered and lastly it gets cold pressed. The roasting gives it a nutty flavour. This is how you make "real" styrian pumpkin Oil (Steirisches Kürbiskernöl).
Meine Ganze Familia gewhont I'm Steirmark! My Oma used to have a gasthaus called the Forellenhof in Graz. Have you heard of it? I miss Austria so much! My favorite and the most magical place on earth to me! ❤
@PalmettoPrepared You HAVE to make sure it's from Steirmark aka Styria. I've seen it in Walmart of all places and it's not the same stuff. Make a dressing with 3 parts oil and one part apple cider vinegar or balsamic. It's the most delicious salad you'll ever have! Salads have never been so exciting lol.
In a nutshell, refining a cooking oil usually stabilizes it for cooking at higher temps at the cost of flavor, vitamins, and everything thats makes that particular oil good for you. Refined is generally code for one step away from trans fats
Genius..the thought of pressing pumpkin seeds never occured to me...and they are so large... I see that you fed the leftovers to the chickens...I suspect you could dry and then pulverize to make pumpkin flour as well., I looked it up and some people use the actual pumpking to make 'flour' but they all seems to be wannabe's...people that are baking with it seem to use the seeds. That is what I do with my left over almonds when I make almond milk..... very interesting project Anthony. Finally just an update for here...my potatoes seem to be rotting in the ground, it has been raining almost non-stop for 6 weeks. We have only had 1 day over 80 (right now it's 67) and I don't even have my hot peppers in the ground yet. Weirdness abounds
The pulp is very tasty. Would definitely make great muffins or pancakes. I threw it and the pumpkin halves in with the chickens to see if they would eat it. They destroyed it. Overall I loved the end result and I can't wait to press all the pumpkins to see just how much oil I get, it's so good. As for our weather, its ridiculous. Been one of the hottest springs we've ever had. Been over 90° for weeks now and we've gotten maybe 1 inch of rain total in over a month. So I'm watering almost every day like a madman to keep all my stuff from dying. Didn't help as the heat is literally burning up plants left and right.
Yeah it's been cooler and drier than usual where I'm at. I don't know if anyone else has noticed but many leaves are changing on trees. Lost several smaller trees and shrubs this year and many of garden plants not doing well this year.... Weird year
@@Fordgroup00 most of "prepping" you see these days are just people buying more of something. When in reality, you need to learn to source your own. That's why I'm not a prepper but more self reliance/ sustainability
Thank you for this!! We learned about the need to produce some of our own fats and are just starting this journey with our oil press. Trying to find good videos with good information on the process has been extremely difficult. We had a farmer down the road that grew the black seed sunflowers that they gave us. Learning how to get the seeds and how to prep them for oil has been equally difficult. I've got 9 hrs. into and have about a quart of seeds. I think we are going to try to press them in the hulls🤔 As to the pumpkin seeds, its close to Halloween and we are saving all the seeds from our carved pumpkins. I saw someone said the boiled the seeds to get the shells to crack and it made it easier to get to the nut. Hoping it doesn't do anything for getting the oil. 😊 Ordered some seeds of these pumkins as soon as I watched your video. An update of your harvest this year and how you did on your oil production would be great!
I've tried more than a few times to get sunflower oil from black seeds and I can tell you for a fact pressing in the hulls doesn't work. The hulls are the sponges and they keep all the oil for themselves. This pumpkin is excellent in the face there are dozens if not hundreds of seeds with no hulls but I have to warn you, it takes alot and I mean ALOT of seeds to make any bit of oil worth having. And the oil doesn't store well at all. Maybe I just haven't figured out the way to process it for longer shelf life but it lasts a week at most so it's best to press as you need since the pumpkin lasts months just sitting on the shelf. IMHO, if you want to produce a great unsaturated cooking fat or oil, the best bang for your buck is tree nuts like pecans or walnuts. They press well once roasted and the oil keeps for well over a year. And it's a high heat oil that's not fragile at higher temperatures
Great video! I would have never thought of pumpkin - never heard of styrian pumpkin before. thank you. Have you tried grafting your olive tree on to a local root?
I was extremely pleased to of found some seeds once I found out that there was a such thing as a pumpkin with no seed hulls. Can't tell you how amazing it is to have these on the property now. As for the olive, it's not the rootstock that's the issue as these are mission olives. It's the fact they ripen in late October and it's hit or miss if we are frosting by that point
Honestly, this video should be at like 500,000 views but the algorithm favors poli-ranting and fear porn. I don’r have a huge audience but sharing in hopes that a few people see it. THIS is exactly what I am talking about with skill based prepping/homesteading videos. Where did you order the seeds from?
Thank you! This has been my biggest issue. It kills me when I put months and months into one video for it to go under the radar and some random dude just complains about current event and they get picked up and carried all over. It's just so frustrating! As for the seeds, I ordered from strictly medicinal. Be warned though, only had a 50% Germination rate
My family is from Steirmark. Pumpkin seed oil makes THE most amazing salad! Its in every restaurant and home over there. They send us a few bottles every year for Christmas. I wosh Americans would get on board. If more chefs knew about it, with all the health benefits and taste...people would devour the stuff! So surprised it has never caught on.
It really is very tasty. If I had to take a guess why it hasn't caught on over here is the volume you get is much lower than chemically assisted pressed seeds like soy and corn. They love tricking Americans into very unhealthy oils
Actually, seed oils have much more omega 6 than omega 3 oils. The very best oils, other than animal oil (butter, beef tallow, fish, egg yolk) are the "fruit" oils, like olive, avocado, nuts and coconut, because they have an abundance of the most beneficial omega 3 oil. That will benefit your heart and general health greatly!
I was honestly expecting these to be more like the pecans or peanuts I've pressed. Was shocked to see it be so fragile like olive oil. I used one whole pumpkin for a batch of pesto that we ate the same day. Was extremely impressed with the taste. Honestly, I've always preferred a lard or a butter but I've been shocked to say the least at how well pecan oil I've pressed has lasted and tasted
Oh nice I'm familiar with that area I had a buddy of mine that lived out that way it's a nice place to live man well I enjoy your videos and keep up the good work and just know you got a loyal follower

Best by far pumpkin seed oil video ty
Thank you so much
Pumpkin oil is very popular in Austria (Kürbiskernöl). 👍 I even put a bit of it on my scrambled eggs. Great video.
Styria is one of the 9 Austrian states.
Excellent. I enjoy it as well. My area was settled by Swiss/ Germans. Talking to some older folks is how I learned of the pumpkin
I will have to try to find some seeds! Any direction you can point me as a starting point would be great!
Good informational video Anthony , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thank you Michael

It's completely edible, I tossed it and the pumpkins to the chickens to see if they would eat it. Let's just say I had jurassic park in my coop

Really helpful! I remember reading stories about trappers dying of starvation for the reasons you mentioned.
Rabbit starvation is a real thing. There is a reason most families either had a dairy or raised pigs. The fats are essential

Nice. Wonder if a juicer would extract the oil? Didn't realize we were almost neighbors. Good video.
That's a good question. I guess it all depends on how much force it uses to press the pulp. Southeast ftw
