Very nice bench. It’s such a coincidence just today I stickered up some reclaimed 63 year old white pine boards to start this very same bench tomorrow! I planned to use Milk Paint, so YES please teach me how to make Milk Paint. I love your videos. They are so calm, relaxed, and you are so good at explaining your work with a great voice. You should do audio books.

    Pine stair treads. WOW!.
Cheaper than Radiata Pine AND slightly over 1" thick, too. All at a price of less than $2.50 a board foot at Lowes.
It gets better, too.The treads are less likely to be bowed or warped than the stuff one has to search through in the regular pine board racks.
    Sweet. Great tip! Thanks.

You mentioned many tiny, yet important, details. The one that really sparked my interest was about cutting cross grain on a tenon to make sure one does not split the wood all the way down! Of all my video education, nobody else had ever mentioned that great tid-bit.
    Thank you.

A few years ago Popular Woodworking published an article by Christian Becksvoort making the stool version of this bench. It was easily scaled up into a bench almost exactly like this using pine boards from Home Depot. I do like your modified keyhole on the legs more than the somewhat Gothic arch Christian used. It adds just a bit more visual interest to the piece. Thanks for sharing and well done.

Interesting Kevin. I'll have to see if I can find the issue. Any idea which issue?

    • @tbayboater
      @tbayboater 4 роки тому

      Hi Joshua
I must stand corrected on a couple of details. Christian Becksvoort is a contributor to Fine Woodworking not Popular Woodworking. Secondly, he used a simple arch on his legs not a Gothic arch. I realized after I posted that the odds of the Shakers using a Gothic motif were rather slim.
Anyway, the original article appeared in Fine Woodworking # 231 from Jan Feb 2013. It was also reprinted in the spring 2018 Best Of Fine Woodworking Shaker Furniture edition starting on page 40.
      Thanks and best regards.
      Kevin

Next time I am going to give your beeswax brew a try. Final note, learning to make the dovetail braces is an excellent skill builder as they have multiple uses in woodworking. Please make the milk paint video. I would really enjoy learning your process. Thank you ... David

  • @juliusp.3365

Hi, Joshua. Your jobs are always simple, attractive and beautiful. As for wedged joints, I think they are one of the strongest joints when using mortice and tenons. I see you build in tenons one straight wedge which is parallel to top bench grain; if you had to build two wedges crosscut to top bench, just near the edge of the tenons, is it also right ? What about? More, how much wide ( by using the chisel, in such a case ) is the slot slope in order to insert the wedge and tighten against the edge ? I'd like to see this particular and strong joint, step by step. I know it is not easy to build, but I hear and see different ways of building. Thank you and all my best.

@@WoodAndShop Thank you! I will check them out. I'm near Crozet. I'm very much a novice hand tool woodworker, and if you peaked at my channel you may have guessed my primary interest is in medieval reproduction furniture. As a novice, I was looking for something economical, but edge-glued boards are a non-starter for the time period. A boarded chest in the early 15th century's dimensions are basically dictated by the width of the available lumber, so a stair-tread is a good option for me to practice with and a little stouter than the standard 3/4'' pine boards you can get everywhere. Your channel has been a great help!

Very cool bench and construction techniques. Still a newbie, so I learned a lot!
On a somewhat different note - I purchased a couple of 3/4" holdfasts from Woodcraft and am having difficulty getting them to hold anything tight, even after giving them a couple of good whacks with a deadblow. Any ideas of what I might be doing wrong or what I should look for??? Thanks in advance...
