    I'm 52 yrs old, I've changed career paths and going the PA route. I am almost done with my Bachelor's in Biology. It's been a long and painful journey working full time as a paramedic in the emergency department. I've also done volunteer ambulance. I go to school part-time and sometimes full time. I live alone and still struggle with bills and paying for school. I get financial aid but not enough. I manage to get a few classes each semester depending on how much I will have to pay out of pocket. I have 3 more classes to go and hoping to finish them in the Spring semester. I have no guidance as to how, where or when to apply for PA school. My GPA is not high maybe 2.80. I'm trying to fill out my CASPA at what point do I write letters to school?

    • @AdannaThePA

      A proper response is way to much for a youtube comment to do justice. I would make the suggestion to do a personal consultation with someone who can look at your personal situation and give you personalized advice. I do consultations myself (you can check my website for more info on that www.AdannaThePA.com) or you can also google others who offer that service. With all that being said, it sounds like you are going to be a-okay! Keep the pursuit strong and you can't go wrong. :)

    • @kalebalbert5507
      @kalebalbert5507 4 роки тому +2

      Most colleges ask; but also understand that most PA schools require a LOR from a PA. So in this letter they can verify your time spent with a PA. Some school do not require it; however for your own edification I think it would be wise to get a minimum of 50 shadowing hours: but required hours vary.

    First off, what an awesome and informative video! I just wanted to let any high school seniors know that I am currently going through the interview process for PA school and have gone through things such as research, shadowing, PCE, and the GRE. I am part of an organization called MED-ED and we are a group of students from different medical backgrounds that come and speak to high school students from medically underserved areas about different careers in healthcare. I am obviously the PA student representative of the group but we have students that represent the M.D, D.O, P.A, OTD, R.N, and N.P professions. We are based in Pittsburgh and would love to come and speak to schools about medical-related careers but we also do Zoom meetings at any school in the country! We talk about the differences between professions such as responsibilities, education requirements, and compensation. On top of all of that, we walk you through step by step on the process to becoming a P.A or any other medical professional! If any of you are interested you can follow us on Instagram @ _med_ed and message us! we would love to hear from all our future healthcare professionals! Thanks for reading!

  • @shadowdroid776

    So I'm having some difficulties on my end getting into PA school. I already have a B.S. in Health Sciences, I have about 500 hours volunteering for healthcare experience hours, about 1200-ish as a Derm MA, and about 120 hours as a phlebotomist (just got a part-time job as one, so that will increase quickly). I did a good amount of shadowing from doctors and PAs/NPs (I think I have about 50-69 hours?), and I have some good connections with my professors and providers that I've worked with to help me with the letters of recommendation.
    However, this is my 3rd cycle applying to PA school, and each cycle I've gotten fewer interviews. In my first cycle I had about 4 interview chances, the 2nd cycle I only had one, and this cycle I've been denied from almost all the schools I've applied to immediately. I'm still hoping that I can at least get an interview for PCOM as it's my dream school, but I'm just losing all hope in getting in. I'm tired and my depression just gets worse and worse every year because I'm never told what I can do to improve when I get rejected, they just repeat that I should do what I'm doing now.
    What can I do?

    • @mikej53

      Shadowdroid776 I can see you have a lot of experience which is good, but what’s your GPA and GRE score looking like? If your GPA is on the lower side, say below 3.2, then you’re gonna have to increase your GRE score. Also practice your interview questions that you got in the past and be sure to be bring out your best self during the interviews. Hope this helps

    Great video! However I kind of disagree about the GRE. I was told by most of the schools I applied to that they only care about the minimum. That's not to say that it wont make you look amazing if you got a very high score. Some schools are looking to can the GRE all together. For me I had a very high GPA but a near minimum GRE and got interview offers from all 5 schools I applied. You are better off "lacking" or only achieving the minimum in the GRE over your GPA or patient care hours and experiences.

Assuming that undergraduate won’t be as demanding and intense as respiratory school was and let’s say I end up with a gpa of 3.7 or above, and I believe I can do I seen the courses, would the schools look only at my undergrad gpa or all my science classes gpa including the respiratory classes?? I can easily retake some of the respiratory pre req and get a higher grade, but I want to know would those classes factor into my undergrad gpa ???

    I'm really interested in becoming a PA. Right now I'm working on getting my BS in Health Science (I'm a junior) but I'm thinking about taking a break from working on my undergrad to do a two year degree in Respiratory Therapy. My plan is to work as an RRT for a few years and finish up my bachelors while I work. I think RRT would be useful to gain healthcare experience / patient care hrs and also to have a job with a living wage while I'm going through school (I'm 24 years old and have a child to support). Do you think this would be a good route?

      I can somewhat relate to this except I don't have a kid. I'm a licensed PTA (Physical Therapist Assistant), worked for 2 1/2 years and now working on my BS. I saved roughly $50k but I did work a lot with 2 jobs but I love what I do. I didn't work for a year (last year) and just focused on school, however, I have to go back to school for more patient care experience. Despite working for 2 1/2 years, they want to see consistency. I'm approaching 30 this year and I'll be finished with my Bachelor's in Health Science in Spring '22. I still have to retake anatomy 1 and 2 since it's been 10 years so really, I can't apply until 2023 maybe. And since I'll be 30+, I have to get everything done before 35 if I want to have kids. That's where I am right now lol

      You could take a CNA course to be a licensed certified nurse assistant. You can then work in a carehome or hospital. The course can be taken during the summer and CNA is one of the better forms of direct patient care experience. If you do apply, just make sure the CNA program you plan to apply to is credited.

    You DO NOT need to be certified in something to get health care experience. Veterinary Assistants and Medical Scribes don't require certification and most PA schools accept that experience.

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  5 років тому +5

      Thanks for your comment. Although most PA schools accept those as HCE most do not accept those as Patient Care experience which is what most of them are looking for. That is why its important to ask each school what they allow for their direct patient care experience because that is typically what weighs the most, not simple Healthcare experience.

    Hi can you please clarify some differences between different prerequisites that some schools require and what is the easiest route to take when they require biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, mammalian physiology and genetics and which one you would say is the easiest with no prerequisites to take them? I am noticing every school has different biochemistries, different mammalian physiology course names, different genetics class, and different molecular class and also different schools require each class with different prerequisites and with lab. It’s so damn confusing and how are you suppose to figure all of this out and know which ones are easiest that don’t require lab or more hard prerequisites? At first I thought oh great I’ll just take biochemistry but didn’t realize it also comes with lab and you must take organic chemistry with lab before you can take biochem. I wish and hope you can clarify this confusion. Thank you always great to watch your videos.

      absolutely it will. I am a junior year college student and this will help you. If you look on CASPA's website, you will see that CNA is an accepted PCE not just a HCE. HCE will count as half points whereas PCE counts as a full. So this will help you in the long run -- however i will suggest something like EMT or something with more hands-on experience in some stressful scenarios in which you can fully gauge if this is a direction you want your life to head in. However, that isn't for everyone, and it gives good insight into EM so I would think about that also.

      I’m currently in school finishing up my Bachelors in Health sciences and my major requires me to complete a internship within a network of sponsors. Check and see if your school offers that because that will help with patient care hours and even get you connected with Med profs for LOR

    • @kalebalbert5507
      @kalebalbert5507 4 роки тому

      PA schools dont care much about your major; and really its a double edged sword. If you choose a non-science based degree you have alot of classes that arent required ( biochemistry, biology, chemistry, organic, physics, microbiology, etc. ) however it helps show that you are a well rounded student and it would help you keep a higher GPA. If you choose a biology related degree, you have many difficult courses that could lower your GPA but give you a solid base of education for PA school and other difficulties in your profession. MY ADVICE: Pick a degree youll love and get the courses you need to apply. You want to enjoy what you learn about and have a good gpa too!
      As for the volunteer hours, yes they count as PCE. However, it would be in your interest of time to get some certification or apply for jobs that allow you to get some PCE while also getting paid ( coming from a guy who volunteering 500 hours as a PTT ). Hope this helps Natalia!
